first run your grain through on the coarse setting then run that back through on the fine setting. You won't have to run your machine at the highest speed and your end product will be more consistent. Excellent review, thank you. The end of the brush is a mini screw driver so that you can remove the two screws so you can easily clean the inside of the mill.

My K5-A Lift Bowl mixer is over 50 years old. I just gave it a regrease and converted it to the newer solid state power speed control switch. It runs like a new machine and runs the grainmill with no problems. I usually run it between speeds 4-6, it is normal for the Kitchenaids to get warm when using the grainmill for extend periods. I let my mixer cool down after grinding about 6 cups of wheat berries.

Hello, we recently purchased the KitchenAid wheat grinder attachment after I did a little research. This attachment seemed to be the optimal in price and for the amount of flour we needed since it's just my wife and I and we are retired. I enjoyed your video, but the one thing I have also been interested in is if your KitchenAid heated up (the motor) and how quickly it did? Did you have to shut it down for a little bit? I did read some stories where this occurred. I have not used ours yet, but have placed a lot of the wheat berries I purchased (175 pounds) in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers for long-term storage purposes. just a heads-up that the grinder was $139.00 when we purchased it two months ago and it's now $149 plus. Thank you for the video and God bless you as well! Cheers
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin 2 жыл бұрын
Great questions! After having used the mill for awhile now I do find that the motor does tend to warm up some. I haven’t really experienced enough heat to stop grinding but I’m only grinding a small amount at a time. What is more concerning to me is the heating of the flour from the friction. I feel like I can only grind about a cup of the grains at a time because they start getting warmer than I’m comfortable with. I don’t mind doing small batches but I’m sure I’ll research the more expensive mills in the future because I’ll want to grind more at one time. I still believe in this little mill for someone wanting to try their hand at grinding without the bigger investment. I realize how blessed I am to have gotten mine at $99. Thank you so much for watching and for the great questions. If you have more questions please feel free to comment again. God bless!❤️

Oh Jackie! This is such a nice review! You explain the features and cautions well and your voice is soothing to the ear. How is your grain mill holding up? How much flour do you grind at a time, usually? I tried several mills before settling on a KoMo Fidibus 21 grain mill, which was designed by the same engineer, Wolfgang Mock, as the Mockmill. It has wood housing and looks pretty enough on the counter to leave it out on display. I considered the KA attachment years ago, but with the amount of wheat and other grains I grind, a dedicated countertop appliance seemed warranted. Enjoyed your review very much. Thank you. 🌼 Michele

I’m late answering comments lol. Thank you for the kind words of encouragement! I’m still very pleased with the mill but it is definitely an entry level mill. I can only grind around a cup at a time before the motor warms up. The grain at this point is also beginning to warm up. I must say that my KitchenAid is over 15 years old so that could have some bearing on the motor. I would still highly recommend it for anyone wanting to try their hand at grinding before they invested in a more expensive mill. I definitely see a heavy duty mill in my future and am grateful for your recommendations. Yes mam, pretty on the counter is very important to me too😁. It’s so good to see you back on KZbin!!! It depends on how fine you want your flour. There are 12 grinding settings (12 being super fine)and I like 10 or 11. At that setting the flour is still very fine. 2 to 4 would be a cracked wheat or very coarse grind. Remember to grind on the 10 speed setting on your mixer. Thank you for a great question! Just a few minutes but with the Kitchenaid you will want to make sure the mill isn’t heating up. You don’t want your fresh flour to get hot during the milling. I haven’t had too much heat with grinding just one cup but would definitely give it a rest for a few minutes between cups if you are grinding more. @LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin Жыл бұрын
I’ve never left mine running after the grains were finished but in my opinion I try not to let that happen because of the wear and tear on the grinding burrs. The sound changes when the grain hopper has emptied so that would clue you in as to when the grinding is finished if you happen to be in another room, etc. It would be best to stay with the mill tho. Thanks so much for watching and for a great question. God bless!

It's very easy to disassemble your kitchen aid. In time, they simply need to have the old hardened bearing grease cleaned out and re greased. You'll notice it's running like new and will last another million years. A good cleaning and re greasing of the bearings every 5 yrs or so sure beats buying a new one!

You're welcome. If you want to watch a step by step. Go to a U-Tube site called, "Living Traditions Homestead" and watch how simple it is. Just type in, "regreasing your Kitchen Aid". Be sure to grab some, " FOOD GRADE" grease before you start the project.

I have a 4 yo KA mill attachment and I’ve been very disappointed in the coarse flour it puts out even on the fine setting. I use winter white berries. It’s like fine sand which gives the dough and bread a texture. I also hate having to Gerry rig a stand for the bowl to catch the flour, it’s too close to the stand.
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm🧐. Have you reached out to KA? They may have some answers to your grinding issue. I also have to elevate my bowl to catch the flour. If not it can get a bit messy outside the bowl. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Have a blessed day!

Thanks for the grain mill tutorial. It was very helpful.....I'd like to know where you purchased yours for $99. I can't find it for less than $150. I weigh my flour instead of using a volumetric measurements. So, am I correct in assuming that a pound of wheat kernels would produce a pound of flour??
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin Жыл бұрын
Yes sir a pound of wheat berries should produce a pound of flour. I purchased my mill from the KitchenAid website a while back and prices have since gone up. From time to time they do run some good specials. A word of caution when grinding tho, about 1 cup at a time was all I could grind before the temp became a concern. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. God bless ya❤️

it would be interesting to see it by weight. if one weighs 1 cup of grain, does one yield the same weight of flour? it stands to reason that one should. Have you tried that? what were your results?

How close to commercial flour does this mill come? IN OTHER WORDS, is it as finely ground as store flour? Thanks. Great video.
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great feedback! I would consider the coarseness to be very close to commercial flour after you sift out the bran and germ depending on what setting you started with. You could also try running it through the mill a second time to make an even finer flour. Just a note, be cautious of heat when you are grinding the berries. You may need to pause from time to time to allow the grinding wheels to cool off if you are grinding a larger amount of berries. Thanks so much and God bless❤️

I been debating on getting this. Do you think this would work on chili peppers? I'm tired of my mom breaking my blenders because she uses them to mill chili peppers into powder. TIA.

Thank you for asking. I don’t think this would be suitable for the peppers. For my dehydrated peppers I use a used coffee grinder from the thrift store. Works great and I get a nice powder. 😃

You will burn out your motor if you grind on a high speed, also you will heat up the flour. Best to run it no higher than 2 or 3.
@LittleCountryCabin
@LittleCountryCabin 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that input! Actually, following the manual instructions, the highest speed is what they recommend. I did notice that one cup of grain at a time was about all I could grind before I had to rest the grinder because of the flour starting to warm. I’ll try a slower speed and see how that works out. Thanks for sharing your great advice and God bless❤️
