Last week we looked at the growing crisis on our streets, with 2021 on course to become one of the worst on record for teenage homicides. Years of interventions and official initiatives seem to be making little impact, with 18 young people having been stabbed to death in London so far this year.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
We have been out with one community organisation, run by a man whose own experience of being stabbed has led him to try to rid the streets of knives.

I felt terrified to leave the house and remember on few occasions I took dusters, a small kitchen knife and glass shards with me just incase anything happened. I was stupid, luckily nothing ever did happen and I moved into a school shortly after. But it just shows how easy the fear of other dangerous weapons can make u hold a dangerous weapon. Yeah but when you have a real weapon it is easier, people are more likely to choose an easy path. Also, weapons are designed to do damage and sometimes people that use them don’t realize how bad it can be, a young man could kill another and then say ‘I did not mean it, I wanted to scare him but things got out of hand’. It doesn't mean that anyone should be able to on 50 BMG killing machines, or conceal carry micro guns (which far more dangerous than the 50 BMG killing machines, even) though. It _is_ the weapon that matters, _as well as_ the mindset of individuals. I'm not for the banning of firearms, but I _do_ think it makes sense to ban anyone (aside from special exemptions such as police) from carrying any small/concealable firearms such as handguns on their person outside of a shooting range or their private property. This is roughly like what the law in Canada is, except Canada has some stupid extra rules that are illogical/net-detrimental, such as banning certain specific models of weapons for being "assault style", as well as banning suppressors. And on a related note, they also ban stuff like carrying around pepper spray or shock devices.

I have a house in London and travel back and forth between America and the UK for years now as my family is from London and Tampa, Florida so I hold both citizenships. The cultural difference is honestly shocking in the UK at just how bold, aggressive, and confrontational English people are. Because you legally have no means to defend yourself English people just aren't scared to bully each other around on the street. Central London I see groups of men walking around in all black feeling powerful because of the number of people in their groups. They walk around bullying and looking for victims all the time. It's astonishing to see because I've never in my life seen that in America! Doing that is basically suicide. You will die with 1 bullet and it will be a legal kill. Now you're dead and the guy you tried to rob or bully gets to go home and eat dinner with his family after killing you and resuming a normal life. The fact that in London people rob with knives is really crazy. I'm not trying to sound like some typical cocky American... but man I hope these kids don't grow up and go abroad trying to rob people with a knife. Majority of everyone from 16 year olds to 40 year old soccer moms and elderly people walk around with a pistol tucked in their pants or purse. It's scary to know that in London people are so quick to rob and get physical with strangers. You just don't see that in America. People don't rob you on the street or try to pick a fight with you because there's more guns in America than there are citizens by 200%. Everyone minds their business and leaves you alone because it doesn't matter if you're 6' 5' tall and the man you're robbing is 70 years old 5' 2". When you both have guns you both have a 50/50 chance of survival. I personally when I'm home in America always have a Glock 30 with 1 hollow point bullet already in the head for my protection. Most of the gun violence we have are stupid kids grabbing their dad's gun out his safe and taking it school or pre-meditated gang targeting. You'd be surprised how low the crime rates are for guns in situations with 2 complete strangers who just got in an argument in public compared to knife crime between strangers in the UK. Guns keep Americans physically safe from each other in 99% of situations that would occur if we didn't have them. The UK has some of the MOST STRICT gun laws and self defense laws in the entire WORLD. If someone breaks into your house in the UK you basically need to cook them dinner and kiss their feet or they can sue you.

As an American, "knife crime" sounds lovely and thats heartbreaking. You can't drive by knife someone, children aren't being caught in the knife-fire, kids aren't accidentally "knifing" themselves to death. 14,000 people have died thus far in 2023 from guns. We're 5 months in to 2023. How honorable that the UK is taking 300 deaths seriously. People wont stop killing others if there are no or less guns however 330 deaths a year vs 14,000 in 5 months is something. I want to be clear, i am NOT diminishing their knife problem. Just because one is worse, doesn't make the other "not terrible." I just think people in the US are so used to crime and violence that seeing three hundred doesnt seem crazy. And that is crazy. That was what I am attempting to convey

If you remove the guns they will use knives, if you remove the knives they will use acid, if you remove the acid they will use cars if you remove the cars they will use rocks. The knives, guns cars and acid are not the problem. It’s the people who have no hope no job prospects and no life to look forward to.

In the UK we always have these strong fixations on the object itself rather than the individuals and socio-economics. You can take all the knives you want but they are freely available and always will be as they are necessary tools of a free society.

Sad to say that I am a 55 year old runner who was assaulted by a car driver (that I later discovered was an ex-policeman). I reported the incident to the police however I live (and therefore run) in a very rural area and there was no video evidence of the incident so the police said it would be my word against my assailants and they recommended that I equip myself with a personal camera. I tried 3 different options but none recorded a clear image and I now feel that my only option is to arm myself when running near my home. Sad to say that the police would rather protect themselves (and their ex-colleagues) than the general public. We need to protect ourselves any way we can.

As a lad from Northern England growing up on a council estate, I couldn't be further from London culture, but Chavs were big here a decade ago. Large groups of young people happily trying to intimidate others. Knowing they had weapons, I'd also take one sometimes. Only as an adult do you realise that you can do 101 other things than fight back but as a kid you're scared but trying to act big so people don't pick on you, that's why teenagers form gangs naturally. These adults going out and basically confronting youth are doing amazing work, these kids are doing what humans do when scared however they're not mature enough to understand how to protect themselves without conflict, helping the kids feel safe and allowing them to mature enough so they can keep themselves safe without needing to stab someone is God's work.

imagine thinking that you're taking the knives away from the people who will actually use them for crime... I'm curious if this is working the same way that taking away weapons in the US working with actually raising crime due to noncriminals not having weapons and are defenseless compared to the people who aren't going to follow the laws anyway
@sheeparebillygoats7221

EXACTLY... the people supporting this are scared and refuse to take responsibility for their own safety. Criminals will never stop, disarming good people only emboldens bad ones. And america is the perfect example. Most Rural areas have almost no crime because everyone is carrying. The cities with extreme gun laws are worse off. And the tighter the laws, the more crime. Their are numbers and evidence for decades to back this up. This video is propaganda to disarm civilians.
@RobotronSage

I don't agree with that view really. Less guns means less gun crime, it's literally a statistical probability. Furthermore illegal weaponry is still illegal. It's like saying we should legalize rape because criminals don't care that rape is illegal and will rape anyway.
@RobotronSage
@RobotronSage 2 жыл бұрын
And illegal weaponry means those who obtain them have committed a prosecutable offense. You don't need to wait until the criminal actually uses the gun in that case as the crime is possession and people who do not plan to use such weapons would not go out of their way to obtain them through illicit channels. Obviously the strength of the law is only to which effect it is enforced but technically speaking making weapons illegal in a country or continent wide area means a legal effort can be made to track and prosecute those who possess them. A legal effort can not be made when the weapons are legally sanctioned and widespread. In a country where it is illegal to obtain a weapon means those who obtain weapons illegally stand out more than they would in a country where such weapons are legal. We can talk intricacies and semantics all day but that's the premise i have for you, do with it what you will.

@@RobotronSage if medicine became illegal then everyone who got it woukd then in fact be a criminal.... just because there is a law doesnt make it right. In fact, when the knife law was made it made good people criminals overnight even thiugh they are good people that just want to defend themselves. Removing defensive tools from the people is in itself wrong. The law doesnt decide right or wrong.
