It reminds me of a webcomic- one alien race had every crime be punishable by catapult, the severity of the crime determined how far you were thrown- in the setting's history one corporations egregious missuse of something like copyright law had the aliens borrow a more advanced species' railgun, to launch the offenders at their sun. so that is what I envison, the kobols are so pround of the kanun that they use it for everything- crimes are punished via kanun launch without the parachute, teh sevarity determines whether it is aimed at a lake, or the side of a cliff, or invaders

This inspired me. In my campaign, the party is currently stuck within the Far Realm (banished there by Larloch, the Shadow King), and while they're stuck in there, Larloch tightens his grip on the world; he's ending a war for publicity and has been manipulating the world's leaders into fighting that same war. However, a kobold colony (who have developed a city over the course of roughly five months) is having none of it, since they believe that dragons are the true overlords, and are planning to start a rebellion against Larloch. They will certainly be utilizing the kobold kanun.

@timothycarney96525 жыл бұрын
Kobold Tank- its a wagon with scrap metal nailed onto it, and the bottom removed so kobolds can push it flintstones style, with how small kobolds are you can fit a lot of them, or other stuff in there, like a big crossbow or argonel as a turret equivalent. The iron serpent- basically an armored version of the dragon's from parades for chinese new year- the head has a flamethrower like device, using either oil or alchemist's fire, and the outside is covereed in actual armor, or imitation scales depending on how stupid you want this idea to be, the inside should be made of flamable materials so if the fire breath malefunctions all the kobolds flee the inferno. the Great Kobold of Kursk- a giant obviously fake kobold, set on waggons and puppeted on the inside via pulleys and a lot of kobold muscle, it is actuall dangerous if its similarly sized weapon or arms actually hit something, but that is unlikely, its main purpose is morale, the kobolds take way more risks with it as their backup making it actually dangerous if you get bogged down so the pilot in the head can organize the crew to line up a hit.- basically a combination of the great mouse of minsk from american tail, and the gargants orks have in warhammer The floating mountain- basically a medieval tech ironclad, its a shoddily built boat coated with cement and rock bits, and maybe some plants, so it can be disguised as a small island, you can either have it really small like a kobold attempt at stealth, or go big- have it the kobold equivalent to sheild's helicarier, big as an actual island, big enough to have farms and stuff inside, a self sufficient community, that uses it as a base for raids since it looks nothing like a ship from the outside- but have it also be a constant battle to keep it afloat, so raids are largely for mateirals for repairs- but also so if players actually board it for some reason, they risk going down with the ship themselves if they do too much damage fighting- but doing damage could redirect the hordes of kobolds on board towards repairs and away from the pc's- It could be a great encounter where kobold ingenuity, and idiocy combine to threaten the heroes at every turn, especially if they need to recover something or someone safely from the ship
@timothycarney96525 жыл бұрын
Another idea, the Great Drill *(needs better name) think the giant drill from Avatar the last Airbender, but in a world that doesn't have the steam engine, its huge, powered via muscle and or magic, it is also very slow, use it to drill through walls, only to have the challenge be for heroes to figure out how to stop it without hurting themselves on the mass of irregular and rusty metal- its too big to stop, but too slow to realy be a threat, so they have to assault what is basically a small moving fort- or have it go underground and the real risk is the collapsing of land and structures as it passes as it is still super slow- like the town guard aren't worried about the kobolds invading so much as the walls and houses of the town collapsing into a sinkhole or something, for that scenario for extra fun, have it be a sneaky mission for the kobolds, like tunneling into a bank to rob or something, but it is so loud and slow every human in town knows, their target loot was moved but the aformentioned danger to buildings gets the pc's called in- they then have to risk cave ins and rock falls while trying to stop the kobolds
@Nikolapoleon5 жыл бұрын
@@timothycarney9652 These are all great ideas. Since I posted my original comment, I already started developing the game mechanics for a Kobold tank, drill, and mech suit strikingly similar to the ones you described, (I guess great minds thing alike) but adding a fake dragon and an armored riverboat to the mix sounds like a lot of fun.
@timothycarney96525 жыл бұрын
@@Nikolapoleon The boat idea was for my own take on a kobold empire as a concept- in 3.5e at least kobolds are an interesting mix of tribal and comunisitic- tribs split equipably when they grow too big for an area to support and go and found a new mine/colony like ants, I had the idea "what if a kobold leader manged to keep the groups under his control after the split" following that the idea was basically massive infrastructure to support the already huge kobold population and keep seperated groups in contact so he coulld keep control- the end game was a kobold empire- which is something I havent heard of in any D&D setting, which is weird considering even orcs and gnolls have examples. the boat idea was basically a floating mountain, a way for that empire to expand to teh seas, my original concept was less silly, basically a floating fortress powered by a steam engine (heat metal as a permanent enchantment to make it work) to sail and start exploiting sea resources for the Dragon Blood empire
@Nikolapoleon5 жыл бұрын
@@timothycarney9652 I considered adding steam power to my setting, but eventually decided to reject it on the grounds that it would have too big an impact on the world. Nevertheless, I've decided that I like the idea of having the kobolds experiment with the science of compressed air. Specifically, I think certain items such as their drill could be powered by bellows that pump air either into a metal tank, or directly into the pistons that drive the machine.

This reminds me of a cannon I made when I was a blacksmith in a home brew campaign, it was the legendary bucket cannon, capable of propelling a bucket filled with water over 200ft able to hit even the finest of fire wizards with water during their magic demonstrations. The fire wizard found me though so R.I.P bucket cannon, rest in a single melted piece.

Welp, I've officially made a modified version of the "Kobold Kanun" part of my Homebrew campaign. I'm calling it the "Kobold Kanun Mark 5", and instead of a giant sling-shot crossbow thing, it's a steam-powered cannon that launches spherical terracotta shells full of Kobolds, essentially acting in a similar way to ODST pods from the Halo video games. (Although the terracotta part is actually inspired by the fact you can craft terracotta bombs in Assassin's Creed: Revelations.) The shells have cushioning on the inside to try to protect the little kobolds, but they still shatter on impact with anything, doing 1d8 slashing damage in a 5ft radius from the jagged shards of terracotta spraying everywhere. Also the Kobolds still have to pass a CON save or be knocked unconscious when they hit the ground.

Yeah, so I have one PC who despises dragons and any creature relating to them, and another that is an old engineer who is gathering artificers and tinkers from across the world together in the hopes of pulling an Einstein by combining their different specialties to make some great breakthroughs. This encounter sounds perfect, and I hope will lead to some great party dynamic stuff, because on one hand you have a character who would not take kindly to these little draconic looking creatures, yet on the other you have a character who would be very interested in recruiting this clever, spunky kobold artificer. Also it just sounds like a fun encounter in general. I particularly like the idea of the ball launched through the air leaving a trail of oil to be lit ablaze by someone. Given that there is an actual dragon empire in my campaign populated by kobolds, dragonborns, half dragons and a ruling class of dragons, having some fire breathers on hand for that wouldn't exactly be difficult.

You've inspired my players to shoot their Kobold with a ballista modified by their artificer the night before. The Kobold then used Thunderwave, their wildmagic went off, and instead they became a living fireball shot from a ballista... honestly one of the funnest things to dm.

I'd like to imagine that if kobolds took over a town the townspeople would keep living there and the kobolds would be more of an inconvenience to them than anything. Traps randomly going up overnight, kobolds living in their houses and eating their food, that sort of thing. It becomes a real problem once trade caravans stop coming in, due to the increased danger for them (the kobolds attack the caravans and steal everything.) As for local leadership and anyone they call in to deal with the problem, they're directly targeted so it's far worse for them. In other words, kobolds are a menace to the elite and an annoyance to the proletariat.
