On todays video, we talk about a couple of things that I think are the reason Japanese Pliers aren't as popular as some of the other brands that are out there.

I bought some Tsunoda duck bill pliers a year or so ago and I still love them. Great quality at an amazing value!

That's why people have more than one pair of pliers and more than one type of pliers because there's more than one job that needs to be done. .. you're completely fixated on twisting wire... so, you have one pair that's good for twisting wire and many other pair for doing different jobs

Another kryptonite I've found is their electricians tools. Either Japan doesn't have the same live work we have in Europe, or they just don't see the need to rate their tools. But it's so difficult to find VDE or equivelent rated Japanese tools. Fujiya do some rated to 1000v (that blue handled lineman plier is one of them I think, the 3000Z) but the range is slim.

It’s not a downside for me living in Australia, since those US brands are also hard to obtain. As are the German brands.

Thanks for the video. I agree that cross hatch knurling have an advantage over parallel grooves. But there's also the regional market preference. As one poster noted in some market most conductors were stranded and may not require that much force to twist as solid ones. Electrical contractors I knew specified stranded conductors, not solid, for building electrical wiring. Solid conductors often only come in non-metallic sheath (NM) form and mostly used in rural residential areas. Klein and Knipex pliers were sought after (I have a couple of these). But electricians I've met were quite satisfied with their Stanleys, which were parallel grooved, and readily available.

Australian here and Marvel crosscuts separate the amateur sparky from the great sparky. Do not listen to a word a man says about electrical if he pulls out anything other than marvels from his kit. If he doesn't have Marvels then he is either 1. a cheapskate 2. not smart enough to research the best tool for his profession or 3. saving up to purchase them.

I wish everybody would adapt the cool high-tech looking grip of the Vampliers. :-) God bless.

Its not really the knurling that effects it as much as the opening between the 2 flats of the jaws. The klein, knipex etc style of lineman have s gap between the flats that lets you grip evenly further down the wore for twisting.

I like that you did this video, you should do more of these rant type videos. It’s informative and keeps the channel fresh. Obviously you should still do the review videos, it’s just a nice change of pace, well done.

Lots of other places aren't barbarians using wire nuts, so twisting solid wire isn't a big priority.

I'd rather a barbarian using wire nuts than potential fire hazards...
@plsreleasethekraken

@@noggfresh not sure why you think a genuine wago is a fire hazard. They're rated into the 300-400V and you can search online to see tests where the wire insulation burns up before the terminal. I can yank a wire out of wire nut (especially a poorly connected one) with far less force than a wago. They are more idiot proof than a wire nut, which does take more skill to correctly use. Other than cost and sometimes space saving in a tight box, there's no downside. You see a lot of buildings burning down in Europe from wagos? Me neither. They've been using them for decades. To be fair, I think the Ideal and knockoffs you find at most stores are trash and I have seen smoked terminals from loose connections in them. I should be more specific and say Wago as that's the only brand I trust 100%

@@plsreleasethekraken LOL you could never yank a wire out of a wire nut I've installed but I'd invite you to try your best. 😅 Its not so much what theyre rated for. That concerns me. It's that I'd rather a connection where my conductors are mechanical connected to each other, as well as a few twists b4 the nut. Rather than a slim piece of metal bridging a connection. That over time would be more effected by vibration more so than a barbaric wire nut (imo). Id like to prevent any arcing as best as I can. And to me the classic/appropriate wire nut is the way for me. To each their own tho. I'm just sharing my personal experience. Also I WILL use them if I have no other choice. Such as your example of short wires in a small box. I'll keep in mind to only use Wago's in the future and not any knockoffs. ty for your insight. (Also I'd like to add my opinion is based on the "Waco" like connectors that come with modern lighting nowadays. So I may be wrong about the actual Waco brand. But I still feel my theory on the connection is better tbh.)

@@noggfresh I'm sure you're right I couldn't pull one of your connections out, but plenty of people aren't great at it and a genuine Wago provides a really solid bite into the wire. It is definitely not coming loose without extreme force (it has a lever not some friction fit). You really can't compare the two because of these differences. I agree with you on the ones that you "wiggle" to loosen--those are crap. The lever makes them more idiot proof than correctly using a wire nut and as someone that has to chase circuits and rewire a lot of connections, they have an enormous benefit to wire nuts. Wirenuts aren't meant to be reused so you have to cut bait on that twisted wire if you need to rewire, this is a dream with a Wago. I don't think wire nuts are horrible, but for a lot of electrical work they are a very blunt instrument and I much prefer the Wagos. I admit they are expensive though. If you can buy them in bulk it's not too bad, but they do cost.

@@noggfresh the funny thing about the video is that my absolute favorite pliers for untwisting wire to put on Wagos is the Klein linesman 🤣. The fact that it is 9", has cross hatched teeth, and has a slight gap at the jaws makes them superior for twisting and untwisting. I completely agree with the video there, but I think what he may be missing is understanding that in the market these other pliers are sold, there may be a lot less solid wire twisting because their termination don't require that. I do see them using a lot more stranded which doesn't require quite as much chomp to twist.
