Back about 1984 I was passing through Magnolia and noticed numbers 44 & 47 idling in front of the depot there waiting to depart with a fair amount of freight cars coupled to the two "F" units. I took a number of 35 MM shots of the consist at the depot as well as a couple on the road after the train departed Magnolia. Glad to see some of these "F" units survive to this day. Thanks for a well-done video on the history of the "F" units of the L&NW!

While commuting from Shreveport to Ruston to go to school at Louisiana Tech in the latest 90s, I would stop in Gibsland to watch the L&NW when time permitted. I remember seeing an F unit or two sitting out behind the shop. I wish I could have seen these F units under power.

#48 was scrapped sometime in the late 2000s to early 2010s in Chadbourn NC under Carolina Southern Ownership. It was scrapped alongside 3 other Ex-WCLR F Units. CALA was the result of WCLR Merging with the Mid Atlantic Railway. As far as I know, CALA never used #48.

I was a traveling salesman from '81-'83, and I would call on the Homer Motor Supply store there in Homer. Driving into town from the south, one had to pass by the LNW yard on the right. I remember seeing those "F" units sitting in that yard every time I would come in to Homer to call on that customer. They always "caught my eye" because of their unique profile, and little did I know that I would actually work on them, and ride on 3 of them as a KCS employee on into the 2000's...I have, as you know, been through the engine compartments of KCS 1, 2, and 3...and ridden in the cab of KCS 1! I have a love of, and appreciation for "F" units that's rather unique! Great work from you as always!!!!

Awesome video! 45 and 46 are in a yard near my town, apparently owned by a museum and awaiting restoration. They aren’t at Niles Canyon anymore, but actually at Lombard Yard in Napa County. I suspect that they are bound for Schelleville to the GGMX museum, but the Northwestern Pacific Railroad that runs that line went out of business earlier this year. Curious what will happen.

Great video Bishop, bud! The LNW F Units looked amazing back then. Of course, I wanted to let you know, that KCS cancelled the merger & made a deal with CP as of several days earlier.

Hi, Niles canyon railway volunteer here I just wanted to say that the museum does not own 45 or 46. They are owned by the golden gate railroad museum owners of sp 2472. They are still on Niles canyon railway property after the golden gate railroad museum moved from Niles canyons property. The problem is that they are to big to be moved by truck and not in good enough shape to be moved by rail (they have been heavily vandalized). I heard from another volunteer that if they don't move them out within a year they may be scrapped. He told me that about a year ago and haven't heard anything sense so I do not know their ownership situation as of late 2021 but I know that Niles canyon railway does not have any plans of restoring them.

I took a picture of 45 & 46 sitting on track 5 in Gibsland in May of 2000. They were waiting for pick up by the KCS to begin their journey to California. So sad to see them go.
