In this video I show you how to use this handy little L298N module from eBay/Aliexpress and even delve a bit into motor theory! I shouw you how to drive these things fully manually with no need for a microcontroller - although it's far more efficient with one!

If you are driving brushed motors with this module, I would use the ENA and ENB to do the actual PWM for speed control. This requires just two PWM outs and that's easier to match drive frequencies and keep other PWM pins free for non-motor uses. The IN pins can even be driven by shift registers or i2c/spi io expanders if needed. This can be used for driving the L293D as well.

That switch panel looks like it came from an old fighter panel. just need some dividers between the switches!

I have the DIP version of the chip. Deliberated about whether to use PWM on the EN or directional pins for micro-stepping beyond half-steps. (shrug) Current feedback may be required to do it properly. Is LL different than HH? Open circuit (breaking) vs short (coasting)?

good question - it seems to be open in both cases

Next week I extend the project with a wiper motor. I’m pretty impressed with the L298N module! My colleague is using the whole setup to rock gin barrels gently every few minutes. No babies were harmed in this series. 😂👶
