Among western history enthusiasts, Tombstone Arizona is well-known as an infamous mining town that gave way to notorious outlaws, gunfights, mining disputes and just about every other type of stereotypical western drama. Despite being the sole reason for the town’s existence, the underground mines of Tombstone are still largely overlooked by the history books; overshadowed by more well-known events such as the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The names Ed Schieffelin, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday are synonymous with Tombstone; but none of these people were miners. We think it's important to document and appreciate the history that made Tombstone into what it is now most famous for.
The mining history of Tombstone is as vast as the underground workings that lie beneath the town. Worked primarily for silver, the mines of Tombstone were extensively developed with dozens of miles of underground workings. The mines were driven to a depth of 500 feet before significant volumes of water were encountered which eventually doomed all mining operations in the area.
Join us as we wander through the endless maze of tunnels beneath the streets of Tombstone. We find spectacular geology, 100-year old artifacts, and sublevels that have not been explored in decades. I hope you enjoy!

As a six year old in 1952 I would camp with my dad and my mother's cousin on Uranium claims nea Moab Utah. We moved to Northern CA in 1954 and my dad would spend time every year up to 1962 on a claim my mom's cousin thought would be huge..my dad said it was a waste of time and gave his share away. IN 1967 the claim became the Rio Algum Mine and ran 17 years 24/7..the largest employer in Moab...refinery built at the site to process ore at this mine and other mines west of the Rockies..shut down when prices dropped for ore used to fuel power plants. Nothing left except three ponds..30 ft shafts 2300 ft deep were cemented to 30 feet deep. Ore body is still a viable source of ore if ever becomes needed in the future. I'M 76 years old and live in Las Vegas after owning a water well drilling company in Northern CA for 46 years. Still love the deset and mining history!!!

In the mid nineties a large section of street collapsed in Tombstone due to subsidence and erosion in parts of mines under the town. Looking at the tiny sticks holding some massive pieces of rock up, I am not confident of this not happening again. Great video. Thank you for sharing. Marion.

Hi Graham, a pretty non descript mine this one, that decline goes down a long way. Pretty cool they had those steps going down, you hardly see that in a mine. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx ❤

Those massive lights and 4K show the mine that the miners couldn’t Phaethon. They didn’t see the mine in full details through their headlights.

My great grandfather, his father and other Pennsylvania investors (Philadelphia capitalists) once owned the Toughnut and other mines in the area, bought from Ed Shieffelin. According to the old mining books, cobalt was also listed as an element besides silver, lead, gold, etc.

They had owned the Tombstone Mill and Mining Co for awhile, and then they sold their shares to focus on gold and silver mines in Mexico, called the Inde Reduction Co. Lost all when a freak torrential rain and wind storm swooped down from the mountains, flooded all the mines and couldn't be recovered.

That’s a spacious mine so far. And no ropes necessary. I suspect the next video will include using ropes since everyone is wearing their gear. Nice that all the different channels joined together for a group explore. See ya next time and thanks!

Wow just thinking, miners only had overalls shirts and shoes when they were down in the mines working all day in the dark. What a hard job they had for the little money they earned. Can’t wait till y’all explore the Biden mine. When you do make sure you leave him down there ,Thanks!

I dnt usually comment on mine videos just take in adventure but the conversation at start was interesting especially with way things are been manipulated by our masters. There to much fluffy none important stuff on TV the web but these issues are affecting us all & we need talk about them but you tube would demonitize your content but not all things should be about money. Free speech is now a commodity isnt free has a price which is wrong.👍🏻☘

Perhaps a few too many people on this explore...the guys behind the camera guy are just chatting about nothing relating to the caving.. and the camera guy isn't saying anything...the two guys in front appear to know what the caving is all about.... difficult to watch...and listen too..
