I agree, and I believe that it can go both ways, strong enough emotions remain, often confused but I definitely agree that strong negative emotions are retained. My mother had Alzheimers and she had experienced some awful neglect in her childhood. This became very evident as her memory declined and she became like a frightened child needing comfort but, on the positive emotional side she would always always remember my father’s name, she forgot her children exactly in reverse order so as the younger child I was “lost” first and my older brother last. It was very sad, but also fascinating. I find this story distressing and believe that her son is speaking the truth about the situation. As for the husband, surely that she’s being looked after by people who love her and only want what’s best for her is the most important thing, and not that he was tricked and that’s what seemed to upset him. He, I believe knew where she was, she wasn’t kidnapped and it was a rescue.

Sandy is a narcissist , and like all narcs want to head off witnesses at the pass, he stated "I don't want Rory disturbed", then casts a disparaging remark about his son having mental issues. Then he practically jumps out of his chair when he finds out that lady interviewed Rory. It was an epic scene.

@@pamelawherey4583 Exactly. When he pointed the finger at her, there was so much anger in that pointing. I thought he was going to slap her.

I HONESTLY think he was 1) FLOORED that the programme had ACTUALLY found him, and 2) EMOTIONAL because, for whatever their problems were and are, he DOES love his son, his blood, and he feels HORRENDOUS that things are this bad -mostly because of his own self and 3) he might even have been hoping for some conciliatory message from his son -even the smallest fraction of an olive branch for him to grasp -and clearly there was NONE. I feel sad and sorry for him. There is still life before you at 62, and clearly he has much to learn and a good ways to grow emotionally, not least of which is that being CONTROLLING will NEVER keep ANYONE close to you.

Poor Heli, at the end, looks so scared and his obnoxious singing 🙄.. Even tho she couldn't express it verbally, her eyes and outward actions were screaming "help me! How'd he find me!?"

My mother was in a very abusive relationship when I was young. When Sandy was in the room with Heli, constantly talking, singing, etc., my skin was crawling, and I couldn't understand why. Then I remembered how my mom told me how her husband used to do the same to her - continuous praise, singing, and going on about how "great" things used to be... "It was a form of control", she would tell me. She said she would withdraw and shut-down the more he would talk, and he knew it. I was around 12 at the time, and I can remember how uncomfortable I felt in the room, and I can remember my moms blank stare. That interaction between Sandy and Heli felt very similar.

My husban died of Alzeimer's , and that loud singing in her room would be very distrubing to a patient. What she was doing on the floor there shows me that in her mind she was trying to get away from these people but did not know how. She looked scared to me and yet the poor dear could not express it verbaly.

My grandmother had alzheimers and enjoyed music till the end but she grew up playing instruments and singing and even one of her neighbours who was a concert pianist played until her final.days. It is not the same for everyone and she has sps apparently.

I disliked this man the minute he opened his mouth. I hope his wife was left where she was comfortable. To bring her back to Canada would be purely selfish. He’s a bully.

Rory needs to understand that it's ok to let go of his dad. His father is a narcissist . He will never change. No contact of any kind with his father will make his life infinitely better. Been there ..done that.. wish the best for Rory. His smile lightened my day!

My mother in law thinks it’s ME that keeps her grown son from her. Blame blame blame. Certainly in the wrong place. He stays away for his own mental health because she is toxic. She would never ever admit that.

@Debbie Schuhman Never mind. I just dug up the info myself. While I agree it's interesting, it also seems bizarre that Sandy ended up marrying his wife's friend and colleague, who Heli had also trusted with a Power of Attorney (w/Sandy). Apparently, Carol Bowlby Sifton passed away a few months ago (Nov. 2019), but you may've already known that tidbit. Cheers!

It should be illegal to show someone at this advanced stage of dementia without their consent. It's heartbreaking. It's wrong. I feel so much for her and her family (and I hope she remains out of her husband's clutches).

He doesn't even react to being told she might die on the trip over. He just wants to "win." She would've been so abused and punished for something she couldn't even remember doing by someone who is a stranger to her. Probably would have died soon after arriving.
