HI Naomi, that looks like a small Black Rat Snake & it is your friend. They eat rats & mice, They don't bite unless they are abused & aren't Venomous. Also They out compete Copperheads for food so Copperheads stay away from areas where Black Snakes are. I said small because I've seen them up to 15 foot long & 6 inches around.
