An email from John, the organist at St John's, Keswick, giving his thoughts on the 16' manual stop: Many thanks, thoroughly enjoyed your video. The Cornopean is by Gern and was originally the Great Trumpet. I don’t disagree with your comments about the Great 16ft. However, it is a very useful stop. I frequently use it as a coupled through pedal stop to accompany the swell, the Sub Bass on the pedal can be a little booming and the Gt Bordun is gentler for quiet moments in a service. When played an octave higher it is also a very useful stop, either played solo or in combination with the 8ft Claribel and sometimes the 2ft. It makes a wonderful Baroque combination. Best wishes, John

Gern was a pupil of caville co; before moving to London =most of his organs were built down south., i am organist at Gainsborough with a wonderful 3 manual Walker but our sister church at Morton has a 17 stop 2 manual Gern organ which is a delight. Sadly in the 1960s it was deemed fit to build a detached console opposite the pipes ,which is confusingly laid out with the pedal tabstops i in the middle =which can confuse,. am in keswick for a weeks holiday on august-cant wait now.

Thank you for the information - I’d never even heard of Gern so this is very helpful. Enjoy your holiday to Keswick where I hope you’ll get the chance to visit this lovely organ! I hope also that the weather is kinder to you than it was to us - it never stopped raining - but Keswick and it’s surrounding areas are wonderful in all weather! Enjoy and thanks again 👍😊

very good sound! THe Cornopean sounds like a Tuba! PS: I think the Voix celeste is intended to be played together with the Viola da Gamba as a string ensemble

Yes, always demonstrate the Celeste with the other String! That's the whole point of a celeste. Also, try playing it with the octave coupler when available! It's a lovely effect!!

Hi I am organist for Lound Church in Suffolk it has a 1913 Harrison & Harrison which has just been refurbed it is a two Manuel with a similar set of voices to this organ. I agree with you the 16’ Bor on the great is really of very little use! The overall sound though is extremely good thanks for sharing & showing that instrument

Thanks for watching, and congratulations on having a H&H to play regularly. It would be nice if the 16' stop was removed here and a nice Great reed was added. I, just like you, cannot fathom the benefit of having a 16' manual stop. Thanks again for watching and I hope you have subscribed :-)

Lovely organ. I particularly like the Cornopean, which has just enough bite while remaining quite civilised. The Swell Octave can be used for other purposes than providing 2-foot tone. Viola da Gamba, Voix Celestes and Octave would give you a lovely string chorus, for example.

It's a fine organ indeed. The Great Open #1 is widely regarded as one of the finest which Arthur Harrison ever voiced. The Voix Celeste shouldn't really be used on its own, it's tuned a few beats sharp to undulate with the Viole de Gambe. I'm usually supportive of a Gt 16ft but it is a bit out of place here... a quiet mixture, or the Swell cornopean on the Great and a 2ft on the Swell would have been useful. But what's my opinion compared to an artist like Harrison?! Really enjoying this series, some organs which don't often get a wider audience. Thank you for posting!

Thank you very much for your helpful comments and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! The idea behind this channel is to showcase some of the lesser known organs and I'm glad you've picked up on that. Please share, etc, and your useful comments are very welcome! :-)

I was going to say the same thing about Celeste stops. They aren’t to be used by themselves, ever! There’s always another stop of similar quality with which they’re to be paired. Regarding 16’ manual stops: take a look at the registrations in (for example) French organ music. 16’ is often specified, and the music is often written in a certain range because it’s assumed that the 16 will be there. Practically every school of organ building makes use of these stops on an organ of decent size.

Beautiful organ, nice demonstration and it's really quick being tubular pneumatic. I have played tubular pneumatic actions, they are highly hissy and slow. This one is brilliant. ❤

Glad you enjoyed the visit and thank you for watching. It wasn't very apparent on the recording but there is a lot of hissing, however, a lovely light action and very responsive!

An organ designed and built to fulfil its role to accompany sung worship in the church. I do fully agree that a Great Bourdon 16 foot is of very little use especially on a small organ. A Twelfth 2 2/3 foot would be of more use and add more flexibility of tone to the instrument in the absence of a “Mixture”

A 16ft flue pipe on the keyboard does seem a bit basey? A 16ft reed might be a better choice. Nice sounding instrument.

@@OrganicVisitations Just as a matter of interest, would the builders installed this 16ft stop to allow for players to get a good left hand bass line for standard hymns with out needing to use the pedal board?
@OrganicVisitations
@OrganicVisitations Жыл бұрын
@@roniesanderson That's been my thought too. There are many organists who don't use the pedals and so a 16' manual stop would kind of make up for this bass shortfall. Perhaps play the 'melody' on the great and use the 16' on the swell as bass accompaniment, for example? I think that's what you mean and perhaps, in that situation, that would make 16' manual stops very useful. Thank you for your suggestion and be sure to subscribe 🙂

The action is quite responsive for being a Tubular-Pneumatic!

Harrisons did build some extremely good pneumatic actions. The best implementations can be as good as, if not quicker than, electro-pneumatic.

Nicely voiced pipework. Good sound. The 16ft on the Great is a wasted slider in my opinion. A Twelfth would have been more useful to colour the tone. The Swell lacks a 4ft Principal. Octave Couplers are okay but obviously cover every stop drawn and of course you lose the top octave of notes.
