I’ve never heard of this myth. Excellent job as always.

For those who are interested this story inspired Bram Stoker to write Lair Of The White Worm. The Ken Russel movie from the 80s is worth checking out if you get the time.

Thanks for sharing this story. I live on Worhhill Terrace right next to Worm Hill in Fatfield on the banks of the Wear where the well was situated. ♥️

It is interesting to note that this 'worm' is described as similar to lampreys (particularly having 'nine holes on each side of the head and neck'). In the past, it was customary to throw small lampreys and eels one would catch in the river into wells. The fish would fatten on insects and other small animals in the well, and would be easy to recatch once it would grow bigger. Also, in many parts of Europe it was believed that ANY snake that lives long enough (sometimes 40 years, sometimes 100 years, depending on a region) will reach enormous size, spout wings and legs and turn into a dragon.

that last one, iirc, is from Slavic folklore.
@melanimatejak2750 Жыл бұрын
@@jacktheomnithere2127 I wouldn't say it is just Slavic folklore. There are similar legends in Britain and Scandinavian countries too, and even in other places of the world (tales about flying snakes are common in Africa, for instance). It seems to be part of the general dragon mythos common to all humans no matter where they live.
@jacktheomnithere2127 Жыл бұрын
@@melanimatejak2750 how do you know that? The only mythology that references a snake turning into dragon with age - that i know - if is the Slavic one. You say British (half Brit, btw) and Scandinavian mythology have that belief as well; can you send me the links?

Excellent, the later Middle ages deserve more credit for having preserved older creeds. Not sure it's the right niche but I wanna recommend a channel named Schwerpunkt that deals with traditional religion and the archetypal meaning of such myths that really strikes you in the universal reading of.

This has brought back memories. I now remember that in the early 80s i had an illustrated book with myth's and legends, including shucks, Geoff the talking mongoose and the like. Once the armour with the blades was mentioned it triggered the memory of the picture that went with this story. To my pre double digit aged brain, it was one of the coolest things ever. A suit of armour with knives and blades, and the worm coiling around it.... Epic

Do you reckon it was real? Perhaps some type of constrictor snake like anaconda. Lions lived in Europe back in the day perhaps some types of huge snakes also lived. Maybe dragons were crocodiles as well. But because they were rare and so scary people exaggerated their features.
