I have a bizarre story related to this film. I had a friend whose grandfather was very ill(literally on his death bed) he called said friend into his room, and gestured everyone else to leave. Funny thing is, Sho Kosugi was (is? I know he's still alive but have no idea if he still practices at his age) a legit martial artist, well-versed in many things including ninjutsu, Karate, Judo, and many others. I'm guessing the acting gigs paid the bills. My friends and I, growing up in the 80s, absolutely adored these cheesy ninja movies. I even wrote a cheesy ninja comic based on the silliness in these movies. It's hilarious to see your reactions because these were all exactly the same reactions we had back in the day, ha!

In answer to your question Erin, he moved to LA when he was 19 and earned a degree in economics at CSULA. He got the acting bug, of course, and actually appears as a background extra in "Godfather II." He was hired by Cannon Films to do a series of Ninja films during the ninjitsu craze of the early 80's, and starred in a trilogy of ninja films for them--Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III: The Domination. He then appeared in a one-season prime-time show on NBC called The Master, starring Lee Van Cleef as a renegade ninja who traveled around in a van, A-Team style, helping others with his hotheaded pupil (Timothy Van Patten). Kosugi played the villain, and further established himself as the Ninja to call in Hollywood.

I vaguely recall that some years ago there were a fair number of movies with titles ending in “of the Ninja.” I found myself imagining Halitosis of the Ninja (really gets in the way of stealth), Athlete’s Foot of the Ninja… a whole Ninja Minor Ailments series!

I loved this movie as a kid. I rented this from a little Mexican video store that sold lots of pickles too
