He smoked more than the chimneys he knocked down and more than his steam engines, a real man's man.

Fred was one of the few people in recent history that I have truly admired. In his tv programmes he not only showed us what the Victorians built, he told us how they did it then showed us himself-in his back garden. When you compare the modern clutch of history programme "presenters", well, they can't hold a candle to him, and he did it all without a Wow or an Awesome and without a wasted word. A modest, you could almost say, humble man who was a true hero, God Speed Fred, and sleep in peace, you are still remembered, and much missed.

God, I remember Fred Dibnah. He was incredible, larger than life, down to earth and absolutely fearless. Some of those falling chimneys came a bit close, as I recall, but he knew what he was doing when he lit the fires underneath. They don't make them like that any more, you're quite right, and we're all the poorer now that he's gone. But a fine tribute to a great man.

Christ, that was genuinely emotional. I used to watch Fred on TV with my late grandad in the early 90s. Brings back a lot of good memories. Fred really was a giant of a man, I doubt there'll ever be anyone quite like him again. Raising a dimpled pint mug of bitter to you sir.

Lovely tribute to one of the greatest men ever to come out of England. Endlessly entertaining as a presenter but a great storyteller, engineer, draughtsman and historian. The end of an era when he passed on all right but what a witness to the forgotten marvels of our Victorian heritage he was.

@@thelancashirehotpots what a great song about Fred. I watched his later tv series about the history of steam and digging his mine shaft for the replica coal mine and finishing off restoring his traction engine so he could run it on the road. I was shocked when My mum told me he had passed away because I didn't know he had been ill during the filming of made in Britain. she was in floods of tears because my Mum comes from Manchester. apparently when she was little my Mum saw him a lot traveling about on Betsy his steam roller with the living van behind them
