Wandering Turnip

Күн бұрын

Check out my new KZbin Campervan channel here - • Mercedes Vito SWB Camp...
In todays video I went to the Rossendale Valley, in Lancashire (on Lachashire day which I didn't realise) to hunt out some lost industry.
This place was famous for stone and shoes, and in my wanderings I was hoping to come accross remnants of both. Whilst I was as succesfull as I hope in finding those, I did come accross the following -
An abandoned football ground
A masonic hall
A forgotten bingo hall
2 lovely chimneys
A steam train
A dry ski slope (apparently still a thing)
And much much more...so I would say a day well spent.
I really do reccomend heading to the Rossendale Valley for an exploration, as it feels like a valley that time forgot...but maybe time is catching up and soon lots of its unqiue feature, will be gone.
As always, thanks for watching,
Until next time,
W.T

1. I played football on that football pitch 2. I worked at that closed pub 3. I learnt to ski at the ski slope 4. I made slippers at Lambert Howarths mill for about 1 week when 16 deciding it was not for me. As far as I am aware they moved all the manufacturing machinery to Malaysia for the work to be done there and now just sell the slippers as retail points. I live in Tod now so in 48 years "emigrated" about 8 miles 😂 Your videos are always thoughtful and ernest. Top man

I think all Mason's evolved from Stone Mason's, from the days when churches and cathedrals were erected out of heavy but ornate carved stone. As the industry declined, other occupations were allowed in as honourary members, leading to the freemasons.

Call a spade by its correct name please! Thatcherism is the British brand of globalization.Any Briton who voted Tory over the last 45 years bears responsibility for the decimated regions of the UK.Globalisation was voted for by Britons in the North as well as London, not imposed by capitalists in the USA! Low wages and poor or zero public services are still being hawked by Kemi Badenoch and her friends to find tax cuts for the well off.

I was born and raised in the valley, as a 17 / 18 year old (30 years ago) i worked in 3 shoe factories - Hursts of Waterfoot, Lamberts in Rawtenstall and Suttons in Bacup. The site of the Suttons shoe factory was actually where Wynsors is now, you had it all in shot! I think that was one of the last to close down. I now live in Manchester, but i really appreciate this video, you did a great job - thanks.

Having watched so many of your videos about boarded-up shops and areas in decline, I would like you to consider making a video about Sedbergh, about 60 miles north of Rossendale. In Sedbergh, you would see what a beautiful English town looks like when everything has been repaired and maintained as needed. Many things have changed since I was there (1978-84), but all the old structures have been well maintained. You will not find any of your favourite chimneys there, but it would still be worth a trip. I guess all the local wool was taken to Manchester. Thank you, your videos are terrific!

I learned to ski on those dry slopes. I wanted to learn before going to the alps. They are brilliant for learning to turn and stop. It's tougher than on snow, so you have to accentuate the movements more than on snow. So when you first go on snow, it's like you swapped a honda Prelude for a Ferrari. I was so happy that it was easier on snow. Those places are great for learning the basics

Walking up Bacup Road to Waterfoot, the hills on the right were quarries with their own workshops, cranes. Producing stone for those civic buildings, houses and 73 mills. Tramways ran up the side of the hill tothe top to collect the stone. Further on before Elegant Shoes on the right the large Union Mill, owned by Red Rose Slippers Holdings. Making slippers in the 2000s. My studio was in a corner of the first floor and the slippers were produced till mid 2000s until one morning everything just stopped. Replaced by imported slippers. Fantastic place.

I spent the first 31 years of my life living in Rossendale and absolutely couldn't wait to leave. As beautiful as a lot of the area is, the local mentality is very odd compared to most of the country and the gradual decay has been very evident my entire life. There isn't much manufacturing these days-it's mainly importing and exporting now. Both the Cobblers Pub and Kidderminster Footwear burned down. The Arcade in Waterfoot was one of the first buildings in the UK to have electricity. The Ski Slope is still popular, but not super popular. You can have skiing and snowboarding lessons there, as well as tubing for the kids. Professional skiers still practice on it as it gives more resistance to snow. Rawtenstall is much better than 20 years ago; Bank Street, where you were the Cobblers Key Cutting place, was mainly boarded-up and charity shops. Now, it's more vibrant for restaurants and microbreweries. Walking around Rossendale on a cold, quiet day does make it look more crumby than it is. Let me know if you ever fancy revisiting, and I'll take you over the tops (it's not a hard walk). The views are spectacular and there's loads of history about the quarries and stone factories and stuff up there

Love your videos abd your focus on architecture. The walk way cover you pointed out whist crumbling was a Victorian glass-topped canopy. In Southport the shopping area Lord Street is fine example of canopied walk ways and arcades. Opposite side back in the day was adorned with gardens, fountains and classical buildings. An interesting fact about Southport is that between 1846 to 1848, Napoléon III of France (Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte), lived here during his exile before becoming Emperor of France in 1851. The ornate Victorian covered walkways and arcades and rows of fine trees, had a profound effect upon him, which is said that Napoléon implemented into the design of the Champs Elysées in Paris. Southport used to be truly a first class shopping destination with its exclusive boutiques, high-street stores and plenty of covered shopping areas. Havent been for years and wonder how it looks now?

You're right, nothing seems to have changed, which is good or bad depending on your experience. Lots and lots of new homes being built, old building re-use, small businesses and shops, etc. Its only about a 30/40 minute drive from Manchester, and the nearest hills to the city, so it will only get better (apart from Bacup, naturally 🙄).

One of my favourite parts of Waterfoot is that the snowman light in the paint shop is the same snowman they've had since the early 90's, and it reminds me of being a kid ❤

You need to go to a shop called Lanx in Whalley, Lancashire. They still make shoes by hand

Great video. I'll say it again, love the structure you create by chance or design. Most every one being a journey of some sort like all good stories are with a goal announced at beginning and then all sorts of "adventures" and discoveries along that journey, reaching a satisfyingly end (I was hoping you'd find a local shoemaker still in Bacup at the end, but your recap did the job and, well the steam train and Lancashire Day were maybe better!). Of course extra points for me for anything East Lancashire where my roots go far and deep (not Rossendale Valley but Ribble/Calder, still close enough for some great memories...and I've actually been to Bacup!). Anyway, well done again. Here in the states (well, let's face it, UK too) we need some positive distractions just now! 👏👏👏

It's not pronounced, Tuckson, it's "Tueson". Very nice Masonic Hall architecture, too. Congrats on a most interesting channel. 👍👍 PS Why is there no football team there anymore? What a shame!

Love the video! I’ve jumped on the comments to tell you that there’s an operational dry ski slope where I live, in Scotland. It’s called Midlothian ski centre and has just had a new attraction called the alpine coaster.

i think it's quite funny how people that aren't part of the brotherhood (masons) tend to get so impressed and start theorizing things when they see a lodge meeting hall lol

At lowest levels it’s not mysterious, as it’s mostly about mutual assistance, mostly in business. It is secret though, even at low levels. At the highest levels, they are among the groups which run the world and have done for centuries. Invitation only.

Really interesting to watch, especially the Masonic Lodge. My grandma owned a shop in Rawtenstall over 40 years ago and was a member of the masons, i bet she went to that lodge!

You missed quite a bit in Rawtenstall, Englands last Temperance Bar and the new market. Ski slope still busy and popular. Great video .. new follower just watched this and your Darwen vid. Old quarry workings but you need to get up into the surrounding hills.
