Beginning in February 2014, thousands of villagers living in villages along the catchment area of the Tugwi-Mukosi were relocated to Chingwizi in neighbouring Mwenezi district after the dam flooded. Government promised fair compensation but this never materialized. From the overcrowded camp where they were initially housed for years, the victims were later allocated a 1ha piece of land per family, but his is hardly enough to support sustainable livelihoods in this semi-arid district.
