There are throughout history forts you just have to take a closer look at, the sea side fort guarding the entrance to the port of Rotterdam is one of them. It was constructed in the late 1900 century and obsolete before it was ever completed.
Attempts to upgrade before WW1 never truly materialized, and yet after being abandoned for 20 years it was still manned on the eve of War in 1940.
It is such a special design that I have not seen one like it in memory so I had to show you and tell you its history.
I hope you will take the time to follow my channel and visit the website where documents and research is posted, and should you feel like helping out please join my patreon where we have private chats and you wont have commercials. It all helps me make more. www.patreon.com/tinostruckman... and the company website lostbattlefields.com

Wonderful tour Tino, ...the main aspect for anyone who controlled the fort was to keep the bakery in tact...smart, very smart.

Your right Tino. the fort is like a paper Tiger, looks formidable but in reality very vulnerable.

When you look it in the present. Take a good look at older maps. You'll realize how easy it would be to get bogged down in swampy cheeseland

Nice looking Fort built for the time period.Even back then wouldn't last long under constant bombardment.

Thank you Tino. One would be nervous serving in a fort made of brick after seeing what could be done to forts with reinforced concrete.

"As I go through historical archives and files, I sometimes come across photos that make me look twice" while on the screen we see two very obvious protuberances... yes, that did put a smile upon my face. Then I had to decide whether I would dare mention it or not at all, I haven't decided yet...

This is a real fort. The person who designed If was an absolute genius. Perhaps there were ways to mitigate a penetration, destroying the whole fort? For 1881 it’s a truly awesome defence structure. They wouldn’t have dreamt that in about 50 years time, huge planes would be dominating battles. Question: When was the first military airships built that could bomb from the skies?

as ever a fantastic video a great insight to another incredible Fort of old - i guess for its day it was ahead of its time and suited the needs of the day - you suggested them there Germans came in and scrapped a lot of metal for war time requirements, and i guess the domes were reinstated in concrete perhaps to be used again in the future, and as suggested as barracks, its a lot of effort and perhaps again more experimental, that dome is a pretty wide diameter so possibly a good example of ingenuity at that time - its always a shame to see such forts changed in these ways, but like so many many buildings, forts and military installations, they evolve as the technology and uses change over time - but its also just as interesting to see those changes, what's original, what's gone and what has evolved

So invasion came by ground forces and from the air. The only enemy ship that came was a mine layer , either unnoticed or out of range of guns when it slipped in mines near the harbour. Then guns broke down altogether. It would still inspire some battleship design from the Star Wars sequel.

We Dutch think very low of our own army. Our marine and troops are mainly to assemble within the larger European armies, at least is what we hear of it. And than our air force which if ok and upgrading. But still they always seem to choose the lesser cheaper versions. And so onward. Maybe you could change this view a bit. Not sure if that will help though. But proud of our army we are definitely not. We think of it as lousy, low grade, and badly maintained. Costs more important than defences. Which is at it is. We always depended on nations around us. Either to help us, or to invade us. And what ever stand we made, never lasted long. Government and Royals always ran off. Seems like since our Golden Age, we never really thought highly of defending ourselves. A collaborative nation, while we depended on resistance fighting mainly, as well as the networks between them, to secure specific people from being harmed. They're lousy which is just as it is. Our anti terrorist people left out of this conclusion, they are ok and doing their best. But for any large scale invasions we are not fitted or outfitted. We have our water defences, which also never really came out as useful. They are all temporarily functional until we gave up. At least is what our past teaches us, if I am correct. I am sure the army hates me for saying this, but it is simply as it is. So yeah...maybe you could change this self view :) It seems our army ever since has been having an identity crisis. Is lead poorly, and investments never on time or sufficient. We simply have a lousy, lazy and overall completely useless army it seems. To me what it comes down to is that our army is there to get the important people out to safety. Bluff a bit here and there, making a stand, that never lasts, and the rest of us if left to the odds. Which is...what history told me. Than we act along friendly and have our resistance, and depend on the rest around us of good will, to come and free us. How that is always arranged, well, money I guess. We invest a lot, so...I guess is what eventually get's our help to start helping us. But the army it self. I mean...lousy is a neat word for it. No Rambo in the Netherlands, nor did we ever had one. And heroes well...let me stop mentioning any, since they are often total anti heroes. For me our army is complete depressing. Sorry to say so for the ones trying, but it is as it is. Unless they are up against bows and arrows, they might have something to say. We are a nation of thinkers and lovers, but not fighters, that is clear right? :) At least we would have some toast for breakfast is all I guess...the Marmalade and so on...apple syrup, and maybe when we get lucky some ham or chicken. Can't run an army on bread alone though. And right now they are even chasing away our farmers...

Sadly the EU experiment have done its best to degrade Europeans love of own country, and without patriotism why would anybody take pride in their military. And the EU is talking of an EU army... But like we say here, we get what we vote for and for so many decades Europeans have voted for mass bureaucracy and centralized government far from their own lands. handing over power and control to muppets who have no care for them. Think of how great and Proud many European and Scandinavian countries were, now living on their knees to Brussels dictates, very sad in deed

A waste of good brick, a time capsule of what not to do. It would be perfect if your enemy was armed with pointed fruit. The Germans would have laughed.
