Even if she had a bad day, if I asked, she would watch it with me. Those were some of my favorite memories. Ironically, my mom died when I was 18. I tried to watch it after she was gone. I couldn't get thru 30 minutes without bursting into tears. Now I don't watch it at all. I can't see it and not think of her. I always feel so bad for Cera's dad. The other families had others with them when they made it to the Great Valley. Heck, Ducky's family is completely intact. Even her dad is alive. But, the last time we see Cera's mother and sisters is after the earthquake when Cera is calling out to them; which is the last time Cera ever sees them, too. But, her dad is completely alone when she makes it back to him, so he lost his mate and his other daughters on the way to the Great Valley. Presumably, he didn't think Cera had survived either. You can actually hear the question when he calls to Cera at the end of the movie. It isn't "Cera!" like you would expect; it's "Cera?" He's literally questioning whether or not he's hearing things. Of course he's overprotective of Cera and of course he's always frustrated with Littlefoot. I love Littlefoot, but there's no denying the fact that he and his friends are always getting into dangerous and life-threatening situations whether he means for it to happen or not.

More Speilberg than Lucas. Lucas was more involved with this one because Speilberg was really busy with directing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (which Lucas also produced but he wasn't directing). In the last few weeks of production Spielberg had some time and decided to cut a lot of the movie out, later than would usually be done which annoyed Bluth, it's actually why Bluth and Speilberg split ways. Later Bluth said Speilberg made the right call, mainly because it was a box office hit, but you still wonder.

This is the first movie I remember ever watching in my life. I'm 31 now, and this movie still has the power to make me cry. It holds a special place in my heart. Also, couple of fun facts: This movie underwent very heavy editing during its development, the evidence of which can still be seen in the final product, like how Sharptooth has his injured eye before the branch hit him, and how the boulder that killed Sharptooth is still there in the background when Littlefoot is talking to his mother's ghost. Originally, the Sharptooth chase was supposed to last much longer, but it was cut down because it was deemed too scary and the scenes were shuffled around, and Littlefoot was originally supposed to find the Great Valley *before* going back for his friends. In addition, the tree star was supposed to have a much bigger impact in the story, but it was cut out because of movie length. Also, in the original story, the Great Valley wasn't going to be an actual physical place. It was supposed to be the dinosaur's name for heaven, and the way that the group got there was by dying over the course of the movie. As for the old guy who consoles Littlefoot after his mother's death, the original script didn't have him, but he was added in to help ease the grief and pain for the audience, because children watching the original cut were just that overcome by Littlefoot's grief. That scene was actually recommended by child therapists. Finally, the saddest one... The original voice actress for Ducky. Her speaking roles were this one, and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go To Heaven (I don't know about any others). She was a sweet little girl who was horribly mistreated by her father at home, to the point that she couldn't sing Anne-Marie's song in ADGTH because the lyrics made her cry uncontrollably. The worst part is... ADGTH is the last movie that she did, before she was brutally murdered by her father shortly after (I don't remember if he also killed her mother, but I think he did commit suicide). Now, every time I watch these two movies and hear her voice, it breaks my heart.
@littlefoot50132 жыл бұрын
Most of what you said was true, minus the part about the Great Valley being a metaphor for Heaven. No, from what I've heard, that was a false rumor. It was originally supposed to just be a documentary about dinosaurs. (Unless I'm thinking of Disney's Dinosaur, which originally had a much darker ending.)

I remember watching this movie as a child as well, probably 4 years old. Just like you, I also knew the concept of death at early age. Not really from this movie specifically, but it was from the Iron giant. I actually praised ideally kids movie that can handle dark subject matter that can still understandable for kids. Especially when it comes to how to see death given the situation when Hogarth says to the Giant, "It's bad to kill, but it's not bad to die" of course it's meant to be simple. The actual famous quote in the movie and I can say not only kids, but even adults here should acknowledge. "Don't let people tell you who you are, you choose who you choose to be." I can go on and on on many other great examples some kids movies went above and beyond on making their message or their presentation clear without to dumb it down. Because "kids won't understand" sure maybe the fundamentals, but the general concept isn't too hard for many children to grasp.

I always find it interesting how tragedy is the reason for setting side prejudice to achieve goals, but when things are peaceful and ‘normal’ in the beginning, it’s always easy to claim you’re better than others, until you realize you’re not when tragedy occurs. If it wasn’t for the drought, Sarah would probably grow to be as prejudice as her father. It’s sad in a sense that social progress stagnates during peace time or grows worst.
@MysteriousStrangerVA2 жыл бұрын
I love Don Bluth’s art style so much. It’s always spoke to me in ways I can’t even describe, much more than what you find in classic Disney films or anything from Looney Tunes. Wish I could say the same about his other films, though. In my opinion, they were just… bad. My only favorite from him was Secret of NIMH. THAT film taught me the horrors of life at 3 years old, all within an hour and a half. Taught me about death, murder, imminent death, hunting, illness, animal testing, drug use, and betrayal. And that spider scene… **shivers** I think that was Don Bluth’s most mature movie, and that’s why I love it so much, even if it still terrifies me to this day. Could never really find the same appeal in Land Before Time, unfortunately, although I can see why it’s loved so much. Edit: about why the group didn’t listen to Cera’s warnings about Sharptooth, if I remember correctly, she had been pranking them about Sharptooth numerous times up until then, so they were just like “stop with the jokes, it’s not funny”. Now that’s a lesson to be learned.
@littlefoot50132 жыл бұрын
Actually, she was right that she HAD found Sharptooth. Littlefoot just so wanted Sharptooth to be dead out of anger over his mother's loss that he wouldn't listen. Admittedly, Cera making herself sound so brave did turn them off to her. Also, Littlefoot wasn't so innocent. He really DID have it in for Sharptooth, not just where he wouldn't believe that Sharptooth was back, something that almost proved fatal for them (Cera did make herself sound brave, but she had spoken the truth about him still being alive.) but later, when he concocts a scheme to kill Sharptooth (it didn't look like he'd found them until they sent Ducky to go lure him into a trap), a scheme which succeeds, but nearly fails, had it not been for Cera, and nearly kills Petrie too, I might add. Likely Sharptooth may just been following the trail of herbivores to the Great Valley, a smart move for a carnivore. On the other hand, and this is more from the books, though, based on what we know from the movies, it's not that far off, that Sharptooth was after the kids for more than just food reasons, but was angry for Littlefoot smacking the thorn thing in his eye and Cera repeatedly ramming him in the head and wanted those two dead and the others two just for being with them. Also, and this is especially true in the original setting, Littlefoot originally arrived at the Great Valley first and was told by his mother's ghost to go back to Crownhead land (that nasty place with lava and tar) to get the others. Thus, he'd know that, if Sharptooth wasn't stopped, he'd find his way to the Great Valley. And that WAS a big enough threat to others that killing him would be justified, despite the risk. In the final edits, however, it almost seems like he put his life and his friends's lives in danger more for revenge than for real protection (Sharptooth wasn't aware of them at that particular moment, so it's not like they made up the plan on the spot to save themselves from being killed.)

Both of my parents are gone now too so I can identify with Littlefoot. I love you, father and mother, rest well. And thank you, Alteori, you brought back memories I didn't even remember that I had.

I finally made it through the whole video without bawling my eyes out, recently I’ve been wondering how the grandparents feel about their daughters death? Like I see them nuzzling littlefoot and just wonder if their daughters death is going through their minds. I don’t know if we ever see them acknowledge her death like we even see Braun get a bit depressed talking about it

Wow I havnt watched this movie since I was a kid, every time I went to my grandmas I would ask her if I could watch land before time on the tv, she always said yes, I watched this video with absolute nostalgia, thank you for doing a review on it, so many memories.

You know it's a fun movie since no one takes in the logic that many of the movie's species, dinosaur or not, never lived in the same era.

Jurassic Park played the same game. Most people are unconcerned with historical accuracy in their dinosaur movies. Especially with cute talking baby animated dinos.

That was actually sadder to me than Littlefoot's mom's actual death scene, like, just seeing him depressed but then having that moment of happiness like "omg you're alive!" and then realizing it wasnt her and becoming sad again, it hurts. Also, since you never mentioned it, the first Land Before Time was actually chopped up and edited a lot, like, the scene where Littlefoot sees his cloud-mother and she leads him to the great valley, that was supposed to be before he went back to help Cera and the others, Cuz he was supposed to see it, then turn back deciding they should all be together. it's also why the narrator said "Cera was too proud to admit she had gone the wrong way" when, with the version we got, there was no way of actually knowing that she went the wrong way

I know I'm 5 months late, but I swear I saw that part you described on VHS. Like he followed the cloud, and saw the great valley from atop a cliff, but decided to go back for his friends.

Watching this is bringing up deep, deep memories I haven't experienced in 26 years. This movie made me feel things I couldn't even comprehend at the time. My parent's mortality. Depression. Loss and longing. Sometimes I didn't even enjoy the movie but I'd watch it to understand why even though I was only 4 or 5. Then one day I watched it for the last time cus it felt like the more I understood the more it fucked me up. It truly woke me up. On top of all of that the art style is so beautiful and weird yet moody and atmospheric. I can't say it's a favorite but it is definitely the single most impactful movie of my whole existence.

I honestly would rather watch the sequels instead of the tv show series that they came out with mostly because the animation in the movies were 10 times better, and the movies at least didn't use the same songs over and over again but with different lyrics. Imma also be honest that the third land before time movie "The Time Of Great Giving" was my favorite sequel.

I remember seeing this interesting fan theory about the land before time, that basically put it as, during the earthquake everyone actually died, and the characters were trying to get through the afterlife to the Great valley-which was actually heaven, and the sharptooths, were actually demons trying to consume their souls, and I think it also said like little foots mother was a guardian angel or sorts. pretty interesting overall theory.

That would explain why the sharptooths can tank otherwise killshots from Long necks.

“Interesting theory”? Seriously? “The characters were all dead/ in a coma the whole time” is the most basic ass theory that has been applied to nearly every movie ever, from Wizard of Oz to Star Wars.

I think Little Foot refusing to believe Cera about the Sharp Tooth being alive is...not sure what it is, but its part of his truama. Like, he wants to beleive that the Sharp Tooth died because of his mother, and it surviving somehow makes it feel like the Sharp Tooth "Won" in a sense. Not the best way of putting it, but that's the basic idea, in my headcanon at least.
@serpentinious77452 жыл бұрын
You're right about the animation being done in layers and transparency overlays. My Mom and Grandmother both worked in animation before I was born. Fun fact: the reason that secret doors (like on Scooby-Doo) are always a different color than the wall in old cartoons is because of these physical transparencies. So many get layered on top of each other to make a scene that the light passing through the clear parts distorts the colors slightly. And since the secret door has to move it's on a different layer than the still background, which causes its color to appear slightly different.

Little Foot's mother's death, whom I'll call Whip Tail, is sadder than Mufasa's death. After Mufasa died, Simba basically got over it thanks to Timon and Pumba. With Whip Tail's death, you see Little Foot grieve for so long

Absolutely sobbing watching this while all my childhood memories flow back. There's so much that goes on and their reactions feel so realistic for what they're going through; they're kids, just going off of what they know from their parents, because all they know is their parents must be right. Little Foot believes in the great valley but not the sharp tooth because it was stressed to him by his mother, just like how much of what Cera thinks was stressed to her by her parents. I still remember at an early age having this movie help me understand loss a little better, and how it planted that seed that sometimes, the ideas of our elders need to be challenged to make the world a little better for eachother. All in all a wonderful look back, thank you for the wonderful video!!

I love this movie. And one thing i don’t think you mentioned or knew but the great valley was originally going to be a metaphor for death, and the moms death was originally too traumatic that phycologists said it was, so they added the old dinosaur to encourage him. And there was some parts that were switched around which is still seen in the movie like the rock that they killed the sharp tooth with, after they killed him in a later scene can be seen. But yeah I love this movie and the death traumatized me as a kid that I have barely watched it sense because of that scene lol

5:20 Yes and No, Paleontologists can't be 100% sure about how sauropods slept. Although, if I were to guess, it would depend on size. The larger the sauropod, the more likely it is that they stood while sleeping.
