In typical TV adaptation style this isn't explained. In the book Billy dies which leaves little explaining. In the TV version there's too many loose ends.

It's been years since I read Tales of the Unexpected. In the ending Dahl alludes to the fact that it may have been cyanide that Billy was given. But Billy ends up dead. The creepy moving eyes in the TV adaptation are not explained. Also the bitter taste could have been Curare possibly Tubocurare. This does paralyse you and can stop your heart. As it stops signal transmission between muscle cells.
