I was perty young when this show was out. I was 8 in '84. I did not know Cassie had passed during the show's run unto I saw a Then And Now vid of the cast. I could not find on Google on they explained Cassie's absence. Did Cassie pass because her portrayer did, or was she simply written off, or other explanation?

Cathryn Damon left the show in 1986 and it's believed that her diagnosis with ovarian cancer was the reason. The producers likely felt that replacing her with a different actress was not a desired path to take, nor did they decide to make Bill (Eugene Roche) a widower. So, Bill and Cassie were both written out as having moved to Florida, with them selling the house to George and Katherine. This episode explains that in the first scene following the opening credits.
