16 million years ago, the largest crocodilian ever swam through the channels, rivers and floodplains of the prehistoric amazon, this creature had one of the strongest bites ever, and had a skull like no other crocodilian, this was purussaurus.

I mean juvenile bull sharks and alligators swim together. Bull sharks go into brackish water to have their pups where the alligators swim. They commonly feed on each other.

This is because the word "Saurus" does not specifically mean lizard, but also reptile. In other words, the most correct translation of purussaurus would be "Purus river reptile"

Deinosuchus is the largest known crocodillian Purussaurus size estimates were cut down majorly due to the originals being false information Currently its around the same weight as a Deino but shorter than one (Its average weight is lower than Deino and its smaller length wise)
@TasimanaOG
@TasimanaOG Жыл бұрын
I believe that deinosuchus was larger in terms of length and weight, and the bite force was also stronger. TMM 43632 even off the fragmentary remains was just so much more massive than virtually every other crocodilian and was certainly bigger than DGM R-527 and is likely the largest carnivorous archosaur that ever existed that we know of so far. There are other huge deinosuchus remains such as CM 963 which was also most likely much more massive than DGM R-527

@@prasanth2601 roughly 11-14 tons and about 12-14 meters long although it likely was closer to 12130-13538kg and 13.52m long. There's a chance that it was the largest carnivorous archosaur ever discovered.

@@TasimanaOG The keyword is fragmentary here. I've lost the count on how many times animals with fragmentary remains got downsized. The proposed number is much higher at 15.4 tons which was downsized to 14.3 tons. These numbers which got popular are given by paleoartists but not verified by actual scientists. So we need to take them lightly. Though I believe it's possible for these beasts to reach those incredible sizes. PFP I say puru is much stronger. Because it's build is more robust and it has a stocky jaw which means more powerful bite.

Could purussaurus brasiliensis take down hilarcotherium miyou ?
@Sedimented.Studios
@Sedimented.Studios Жыл бұрын
based on the prey and predator size relationship of modern crocodilians, and current estimates of weight of both, probably not, but a subadult hilarcotherium miyou would be possible prey
@TasimanaOG
@TasimanaOG Жыл бұрын
@@Sedimented.Studios purusaurs weight estimates from 7.5-10 tons with an average somewhere around 8-8.5 tons for a fully grown adult male. hilarcotherium miyou would have been 6.5 tons for the upper average fully grown adult. Current nile crocodiles have been observed killing animals up to 2 times their own mass alone and more in groups. I don't see why the heavier and more massive animal in purusaurs wouldn't be able to take down a hilarcotherium miyou

It’s actually a common misconception that crocodilians are indeterminate growers. After a certain point, they will stop growing, but some individuals will continue to put on weight.

very interesting video. but Purussaurus was not only giant crocodile in the run for the title of the biggest one ever or one with a strongest bite Deinosuchus riograndensis was same size or possibly even larger. and his bite force could be as much as 102000 Newtons so even stronger than Purussaurus (although they lived in different time) that said Purussaurus was still very interesting and this is a very good video. especially for someone who doesn't know that much about prehistoric crocodiles such as myself.
@Sedimented.Studios
@Sedimented.Studios Жыл бұрын
i'm not sure where the bite force figure for deinosuchus you stated came from, but that does not sound accurate. While purussaurus may have been slightly shorter than deinosuchus at their largest sizes, purussaurus was significantly more stocky. also purussaurus had specific adaptations to withstand higher bite forces which deinosuchus lacked
@bartangel4867
@bartangel4867 Жыл бұрын
@@Sedimented.Studios the information I got is from wikipedia I don't know how accurate it is. however the bite force given in wikipedia varies greatly with the lowest being much smaller than the upper with the minimum bite force of deinosuchus being only 18000 newtons. however there were more than one species so I assume the 18000 newtons was for small female of a smaller species while the 102000 newtons was for large male of the larger species Deinosuchus riograndensis.
@bartangel4867
@bartangel4867 Жыл бұрын
@@Sedimented.Studios also Deinosuchus rugosus was about the size of Purussaurus or slightly smaller. but Deinosuchus riograndensis was slightly larger than Purussaurus and it could reach lengths of 12m and weight of 8.5 metric tons while Purussaurus had weight up to 6.2 metric tons. so that might be the reason Deinosuchus riograndensis bite force would be larger than that of Purussaurus even if he didn't have additional skull reinforcement also while his snout was not quite as wide and robust as Purussaurus it was still quite wide and robust. together with larger size that might account for greater bite force.
@Why79-dx4rf

@@Sedimented.Studios The study the 102,000 newton bite force figure comes from is a 2012 study called 'insights into the ecology and evolutionary success of crocodilians revealed through bite force and tooth pressure experimentation'. As for which was larger, it seems likely deinosuchus was given that a recent 2022 study titled 'body size estimation of caimaninae specimens from miocene south america' puts purassaurus at up to 30 feet long, while deinosuchus still has estimates of up to 12m(40 feet) with the upper bound for the average seeming to be around 33-35 feet.
