@Africangreyjournal3 ай бұрын
@@Maggieroselee Hi Maggie! For some reason I am unable to locate your comment regarding Parrot breeding but I am able to read it in my email notifications. Happy to answer here. First and foremost, these two are my pets. If they choose not to breed after the 4-7 years it takes them to mature, they are still a dream come true. That said, the answer to your question greatly depends on who you ask but my approach is centered around the preservation of the African Grey Parrot in the USA. The majority of parrot breeders handfeed (imprint) their babies as they are more than likely destined to be pets. Due to this focus across American Aviculture, we are now seeing that a large percentage of male African Greys that were handfed imprinted pets are not competent at mating. This will eventually cause these birds to disappear from US aviculture as many breeders are still working with wild caught birds which are/will be approaching retirement age in the next 5 years. My approach to breeding will be similar to many breeders in Europe. I plan to allow them to raise their babies until weaning to ensure that these birds know they are birds and are not excessively imprinted on people. One thing I frequently see that I disagree with is a comparison of the overpopulation issue with dogs and cats to parrots. Since the WBCA was passed in 1992, the population of parrots in the USA has been trending down, not up. There is no shelter or rescue on this planet that is euthanizing parrots weekly. As we know, this is something dog and cat shelters do due to actual overpopulation. We started with over 280 species of parrots in US captivity and we now have under 35. Thank you for the question! Im not sure why I couldn't locate your previous comment but I am glad I found you here!

The African Greys are my favorite. I hand raised (syringe feedings to weaning) a beautiful Grey. They are by far more mild mannered and quiet than any of the four Amazons (each a different species) which I had. The one thing that I wish you would have added as you showed us the birds is how long they live. Interesting video. In my country Sweden you hardly see any parrots in the stores since like 15 years back. If you want a parrot then you have to contact a breeder. It’s also illegal to handfeed baby parrots and to wing clip them. By law you need to have two of the same kind so they have a friend of their own and you need a cage that are very large…for a big macaw it is about the size of a room. In a pet store in my country you can usually be happy if you can even find 3-4 parrot toys…..the pet stores over here seem to think everyone just own a dog or a cat…..which isn’t the case…so it a huge difference between our countries.

I have 2 amazons. One Red-Lored and a Yellow-Naped. Love them. They are also prone to fatty liver as I lost my 37 year old Orange-Winged to it. She was wild caught and they didn't have the pellet blends available when I got her. The red macaw was a scarlet. The way you can tell is they have yellow on the upper part of their wings whereas green wings have green. Also, he has no small feathers on his face and the greenwing does. To tell if a parrot is a baby, they have dark eye which eventually lighten.

Macaw dont wanna step up, macaw don haf to step up. Yes, thats a Greenwing. Well done tour. This store commits to a HUGE amount of work raising all those babies. Nice clean cages, with toys, high quality weaning food. But, whats their plan for socialising these birds. Excellent store, from 34 years parrot keeper. Have had 12 beautiful birds over that time.
@Africangreyjournal3 ай бұрын
Agreed! All human interaction is on the birds terms. Im glad you enjoyed the tour! They have a fantastic team there. From what I understand, they take time out before and after store hours for socialization and they also allow perspective buyers to interact with them.

I have always wanted a parrot or similar bird but life got in the way and I was never able to have one, or two, lol. I know they require interaction and time and I just didn't have the time to give them, so I never got one. Now I'm a little too old, especially when you consider how long most of these birds can live, it wouldn't be fair to the birds. I just found your channel and since you are going to be producing videos with the progression of these young birds, I have liked and subscribed and am looking forward to following your journey, and the birds' journey. I guess I'll be living vicariously through you all for this one, lol. Congratulations on your new additions and as I follow this journey, I wish you the very best of luck. Best wishes.

Great store for supplies & foods but oh boy, I hate seeing & hearing about all the breeding. Here in CO there’s a parrot sanctuary with over 800 surrendered birds. I have 3 rescues myself (2 Amazons & 1 Patagonian). Many parrots live in multiple homes over the course of their long lives or end up in sanctuaries. The parrot industry is as bad as the dog breeder issues. I wish you would just enjoy your beautiful grays and not breed them as it just adds to the problem.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I do disagree with you when you compare the overpopulation issue with dogs and cats to parrots. If that were the case, the population of parrots in the USA would be going up not down. When you look at the numbers, we started with over 280 species of parrots in US captivity and we now have under 35. Also, there is no shelter or rescue on this planet that is euthanizing parrots weekly, this is something dog and cat shelters do because of the overpopulation issue. I do not believe a parrot is a good pet for everyone, but it could absolutely make a good pet for the right person. You mentioned a sanctuary with over 800 parrots, that is certainly alot of birds but how many of their birds do they adopt out? It is my understanding that a sanctuary is offering lifetime care for these birds. If they are providing lifetime care and not adopting out, it would make sense that they have a large flock. I am a supporter of rescues and sanctuaries but my birds will never end up in one because any bird bred by me will always have a home here.

I had to turn the volume way down as to not wake up my bird. Cool store. 2 African Greys? You’re going to be busy, they’re beautiful but the big beaks make me nervous, I’ll stick to my GCC. 😊

I just love parrots. The problem is my local parrot store in my city is gone forever and now how am I supposed to save mistreated birds if the bird store is gone permanently?

My husband has a 2yo AG. I call her The Vulture. I recently adopted a 15 yo RedLored/Lilac Hubrid Amazon I named Chicken 🐔 because she is still afraid of everything in her new home. lol. She was never even fed fresh fruits and vegetables.
@Africangreyjournal15 күн бұрын
Congrats on your new addition! Has Chicken showed any interest in fruits or veggies since you brought her home? It may take a little while for her to warm up to it.

@@Africangreyjournal No she hasn’t. She has not learned any words yet either. One would think in her 15 years she would have learned at least 1 word. lol. I talk to her a lot and give her a lot of attention, and keep trying with the fruits. 🍉

So happy I found your channel. AGs are my favorite birds. I have a 2 year old who definitely has his own strong personality. Hates being handled but loves to chatter and carry on conversations with himself if he thinks I'm not paying attention.
