Most people think the largest pyramid in the world is the Great Pyramid of Egypt, but not many know that this title claim belongs to another.
Known as The Great Pyramid of Cholula, this huge man-made complex in Puebla, Mexico is the largest archaeological site of a pyramid in the New World, as well as the largest pyramid known to exist in the world. In fact it is the largest monument ever constructed by man.
It stands at 180 feet above the surrounding plain and has an enormous footprint of 1,480 x 1,480 feet. The Great Pyramid of Egypt is taller at 481 feet but with a base of 756 feet square, its footprint is far smaller than the one in Mexico. The volume of the Cholula pyramid is 4.45 million cubic metres, whilst the Great Pyramid of Egypt is 2.5 million.
Through the dating of ceramics and figurines found in the original pyramid core through to the outer layers, the pyramid was built in four to six stages, starting in the 3rd century BC through to the 9th century AD, and traditionally, the experts say it was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl.
Find out more about this enormous and enigmatic pyramid and please subscribe for more videos from Ancient Architects.

Great info layout. I'm from Puebla and didn't know a few of these things. What's worse is that Cholula is now deeply religious and would probably rage at the thought of uncovering the pyramid and getting rid of the church. Some tunnels were dug to go up inside the pyramid but left at a certain point, so one can sit in those and just be astounded and being surrounded by two narrow walls in the middle of this huge constriction. It's astounding. The cupola of the church fell down in 2017 earthquake, but it was quickly restored. Thanks for the explanation, more people should visit Puebla, you will fall in love.

San Andrés is more modern and dynamic with a night life revolving around the University Las America’s, lots of great Reataurent with vegetarians and vegan options. And San Pedro which is the more traditional Mexican city with its huge farmers market, historical Center and typical renowned Mexicano cuisine. Definitely a destination to visit if you are in Puebla. Massive thanks to Ancient Architects for one again putting the spotlight on a less well known, but amazing ancient structure. I haven't come across it so it is another site for me to take interest in and research myself. Having said that, i think it is an absolute crime to history that the church built on top completely rules out any further exploration of this amazing structure. It is massively disrespectful to those that toiled to build it...and is almost a metaphorical two fingers to their reasons for doing so...tragic. Anyway, Big thanks again to AA ...Respect, Peace

It's pre-flood mythology. There are other parallels between old and new world mythology, the flood being one of them. I used to think of it all as just stories but the idea that there was a worldwide catastrophe at the end of the last ice age is definitely supported by the parallel mythology. It's likely we lost the records in one of the many libraries that got burned throughout history. Snippets still survive but investigation of them is looked upon as pseudoscience. The history channel with its ancient aliens BS and Zacharia Stitchin with his BS interpretation of Sumerian tablets haven't helped either.

At least the church was built on top of this pyramid, unlike where the Spanish dismantled and destroyed Tenochtitlan (including Templo Mayor) to build Mexico City Cathedral. I just wished that the Spanish empire spared Templo Mayor and didn't drain Lake Texcoco. They should've just built the new Spanish city North of lake Texcoco or somewhere else in the valley. I mean look, the Spanish empire also conquered my country (Philippines) for more than 300 years, and we don't have ancient pyramids like Mexico, but the Spanish were still able to make cities and churches without ruins. This just makes me mad, and I feel sorry and bad for Mexicans. Even their language is replaced with Spanish which is so strange and weird, because the Spanish didn't destroy our local languages and dialects. 🤔 Every Filipino still speaks and understand Tagalog/Filipino language. To clarify, I have nothing against Spain and the Catholic church, just their ancestors who did terrible things 😅 I'm just glad the Spanish empire didn't dismantle / destroy the Teotihuacan pyramids.

You mean the Arabs who wrote them in the 9th century AD called them by those names. All evidence says that text was written by Arabs, and the Europeans who translated it into Latin started the rumor that it was written by Hermes. I guess it's possible that the caliph Al Mamun found them in an Egyptian pyramid and somehow managed to translate a language that had been dead for thousands of years into Arabic, but that's a real stretch and isn't backed by evidence.

Is this title not misleading? Largest pyramid, yet its not triangular in any cross section. Its more of like a raised platform. For it to be pyramidal, it must have a triangular cross section. A better name would be fitting. Also in all your clips/photos put North West monikers on the screen because we have no idea where those directions are.

The Chorotegas in Costa Rica and Nicaragua are believed to be descendants of Cholula. Archaeology supports this theory as well as the language they spoke because both civilizations spoke Oto-mangue, it is a very strong theory. And the reason why Costa Rica has so many Chorotegas is because when the Nahua Nicarao people migrated to Nicaragua, they fought with the Chorotegas over the fertile lands of western Nicaragua as well as the 2 Nicaraguan lakes. After the Nicarao won, the Chorotegas were displaced, some fled south to Costa Rica but others fled east towards the San Juan River along the Costa Rican border 👍

Interesting video, thank you. Although if you ask me that building on top of the pyramid looks more like a Mosque or a Russian Orthodox church than a Roman Catholic 'church', obviously built because it was the highest point around and it most likely wasnt originally a church. They only standardised the church after 1611 and because this was built before the builder built what was wanted. A resonance factory. I have photos I took myself in Angers cathedral, France of an alcove that had been uncovered back to its original plaster for a short time, that had the names. Rhea, Romulus, Cleopatra, Hercules & Semiramis and inscriptions about living in this world and the next. Built in 1100 or so its highly odd to find the names of people who are vilified today, dont you think? Why are they in a cathedral supposedly built for a religion that didnt exist yet? History has been flipped in favour of a control system.

The similarities of those two myths are amazing. P.S. At 8:24 : the staircase look a bit out of place like it was added later.

Thank you for these wonderful 10 minutes. I've been there to Cholula and that church on the top of such historical and important place, was really shocking. Totally agree with every word you said! Gracias ☺️

Yes it is the largest man-made structure, but it is partially not as popular because it is not as impressive considering it was definitely built up in several stages. Others, such as pyramids of giza, may have been as well, but those are not definite. (partly why I think they have deterred so much more thorough exploration of the site)

I enjoy learning about all these places that I had never heard of in school. The myths sound similar to Noah's flood and the tower of Babel.

Ever thought that this could be the original version of Babylon, built on top of another temple on top of another temple?

No. Simply because the cities and cultures of Sumer are so much older, about twice as old. Supposedly there is a city/town built high on a mountain in Colombia with distinct Hindu stylistic influences, indicating some ancient contact from East to West

It's not just what the Spanish did to the physical monuments and the people, they also destroyed cultural relics and written records of indigenous cultures in Central and South America. These cultures were sophisticated and had highly Advanced societies and nearly all evidence of that was destroyed. It is one of the great tragedies of our history.

How many people know about the very sizeable step pyramids in China ? The authorities there seem to want to cover them up and have been planting trees all over them for decades. But the biggest one has a base foot print of 1,200 ft square (yup, 1,200 ft). Around Xian there are at least 50 pyramids mysteriously built up along a geographical line measuring some 24 miles end to end, and some of the Pyramids along that line have the same 750 ft base foot print as Khafre/Giza. But most people into this general subject area have no idea about any of the Chinese ones !!

I enjoyed it very much! Thanks. I’m certain that there was an influence between the people of cholula and others from other parts of the globe. The most important part of this video is the evidence is the blatant disregard for a sapient race that may have very important information.

Love what you are sharing! That said, please update your vocabulary from "manmade" to "humanmade." Won't address the possibilities of help from "others" with construction at this time.

I asked chatgtp to give me a random fact. "The world's largest pyramid is not in Egypt, but in Mexico. The Great Pyramid of Cholula is a massive ancient structure located in present-day Mexico, and it covers an area of over 4 acres. It was built by the ancient Maya civilization, and it is considered to be one of the largest archaeological sites of the Americas." wow. thanks chatgtp. never knew about this. i will not look at the pyramids in Egypt the same way ever again.
