National Geographic explorer and storm chaser Tim Samaras devoted his life to unlocking the mysteries of extreme weather. Along with his son, Paul, and storm chaser Carl Young-his longtime collaborators-he died in a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, on May 31, 2013. "The Last Chase" examines that mammoth storm, and reflects on Samaras's life and legacy through the words of people he knew and worked with.

He will be remembered forever in the world of chasing, for sure. I came back to this video, because I was nearly hit chasing the Winchester, Indiana (nocturnal) EF3 tornado recently, and it made me think of Tim, Paul, and Carl. I had never met Tim in person, but had talked to him nearly nightly via HAM radio during the winter months.

Tim Samaras was extremely safety conscious. I remember when he would look at Dr. Reed Timmer at times and shake his head. Reed was the daredevil. Tim was Mr. Safety. Therefore, this tornado really did the unexpected in order for it to take the lives of Tim, Paul, and Carl. RIP gentlemen. You all are still missed in 2019.

@@WeckoGecko tornados are not rated on the EF scale by windspeed, hurricanes are. Tornados are rated on the amount of damaged they inflict. you may get a small tornado go through a major city and do millions to billions of pounds/dollars of damage, this will be a EF5. this tornado that killed Twistex team was the biggest on record, but, done little structural damage classified EF3. Moore, OK, tornado., a little smaller in size, almost same windspeed, but caused huge structural damaged, EF5.

Storm chasers was one of my favorite shows when I was in elementary school. I live in Pennsylvania so we don’t get many tornadoes around here. One day I was rushing so I wouldn’t be late for school and the weather was on (I never listen to the news). Once I heard twistex, I stopped dead in my tracks a turned around to watch the news. So upsetting. He was one of the safest storm chasers. That El Reno tornado was just so unpredictable.

I just hope the men who flew out of the vehicle passed out or were knocked out before flying up violently and dropping to the ground. Or Tim being strapped in, helplessly watching as his son got sucked out. It is so emotionally painful and horrific, but people need to know the reality they're putting themselves in with stormchasing. After watching him on storm chasers I feel so sad for him now. He seemed like a great person. There's a memorial on the site where they were hit and killed by the tornado..people gave various offerings to them

Tornadoes do the unexpected by their very nature. Obviously he wasn't all that safe considering he's dead. They drove right into the path of a large tornado. How safe is that?

I'm not a storm chaser but if I had the chance to ride with on it would have been Tim. He gave a lot of data to try to save other people from being killed in tornado's. I was in total shock when I heard that Tim, Paul & Carl lost there life & that should send a strong message to other's if your not a pro at chasing tornado's stay away from them because you are risking your life with something you no nothing about & leave it to the pro's .

I live in tornado alley. Any death is tragic, but the most tragic ones of all are the ones that could be prevented. These people forgot how unpredictable these tornadoes can be. They can change direction in the blink of an eye. That is why you always, always, always, keep a huge distance between yourself and them.

God bless you Tim. Rest in piece, your son as well. I was basically in Yukon Oklahoma at the time of this tornado, and believe it or not, sub vortices were developing actual tornadoes, also rain wrapped all the way out here from that supercell. It was the most hellish day I can remember, and my pug frank and I almost got struck by lightning standing outside.......

5:02 that's so unbelievably terrifying and a scary description of the Twister. I can't imagine trying to get to a tornado and its rainwrapped, and not even realizing that the entire tornado is the rainwrap. It's crazy, scary, and sad. You will be missed Tim Paul and Carl... Never forget

I do some amateur chasing myself and friends and family have simply accepted that I had a screw loose. But after Tim, Paul and Carl -- three well-trained pros -- they've asked me to stop. Not sure that I will...but I know the storm chasing community lost three of the best there ever were. And that's a loss for all of us.
