The politics in DE's writing have a lot of nuance-even the fascist questline has a lot of empathy for the people who are attracted to that kind of worldview-but the way Harry specifically engages with them is almost always comically shallow, just blurting out the most extreme edgelord version of whatever's currently at the top of his Thought Cabinet. Even if you're e.g. an ultralib at Joyce or a super-racist with Measurehead, they're like "...uh-huh, sure buddy." If you dig into the "vision quests," it's even more apparent that no matter what ideology you have Harry go all-in for, he's just using it as a distraction and/or coping mechanism, not much different from booze and drugs. It's pretty clever writing: they can say Serious Things About Politics with the world-building and still go scorched-earth silly satire with the protagonist. Oh also: this video fucking rules, holy shit
@JamrockHobo Жыл бұрын
Yes! and it's what makes the fascist quest so interesting to me. It goes way further than just saying "fascism bad" and tells a story about why it is attractive to people in the first place. Also, Harry going overboard with his political ideology of the day is never not funny to me. "Stop this meat grinder thing - it's off-putting, even for fellow communists." Or Evrat saying "You're not an ultraliberal, Harry. Get the fuck out of here. Don't be retard."
@obolisk0430 Жыл бұрын
I'll have to take another look then. I didn't get very far, and the way it was depicting fascism as far as I'd seen didn't seem nuanced at all, which is more or less what I'd expect from a game made by open communists.

@@obolisk0430 Since the game is ultimately from Harry's perspective (even the narration is voices in his head, remember), you're seeing things how Harry perceives them. @pedrolobo486011 ай бұрын
@@obolisk0430 Lmao, the game outright tells you communism is dead and impossible to achieve at every opportunity, but I'm betting you got triggered at the “lack of nuance” over the slightest hint of criticism toward fascism. The game criticizes you even if you don’t pick a political agenda, and I’m not talking moralintern here, I’m talking truly apolitical. Criticism is part of a nuanced take, if you don’t want it, then you really just want the game to tell you that you’re right for believing what you do.

Then we got another coup, a capitalist one, that was 4 decades ago Did it solve starvation? No, the deaths remained roughly the same Did it solve unrest? No, there are tens of thousands protesting in the streets, and far-right extremism is rising Did it save our culture? It's also not wrong. Since the development of capitalist industrialism we are more stressed, more socially isolated, and a more unsatisfied with life. I've seen people resort to self harm and even suicide as a direct result of specific capitalist pressures -- Getting summarily fired from one of your three jobs when you already can barely afford food, getting thrown out onto the street by your landlord because you were hospitalized and couldn't pay your rent, internalizing the idea that if you can't work your life is a burden on others, working day in and day out in a passionless job for petty tyrants that disrespect you for years on end, working in insafe environments that causes injury or illness... This stuff isn't hypothetical. I've lost people to this. It's not some tragic accident, it's a system that doesn't value human life working as intended, and as a result people become beaten down and hopeless.
@highecuador1873 Жыл бұрын

@AndrewFullerton Yeah, I'd much rather live in a society where my entire life is dictated by a group of people that I have never met. Where my house is a small room in a set of complexes. Where my dissent to the state causes my arrest and forced labor in gulags. Where instead of paying a landlord, I pay the government to lord over my life. That sounds like the most unstressful life ever. What made people more stressed in modern life wasn't capitalism, it was urbanization. Having villages and towns where everyone knows each other brings a sense of community. Being one out of a million, does not. But to say this would be to act as if every generation before the mass urbanization of homes had it easy. The truth is that stress is a part of life, everyone has to deal with it. It just manifests in different ways.

"All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*" aint that the fucking truth ! All i do now is try to convince myself that a change can be made, that it's not too late, that all of the god damn blood spilled by despots, dictators and tankies was not in vain but to show us our mistakes ! In every corner of my country i see how we are kept down, i see how the state refuses to solve problems that benefit them and not the citizens ! It's just so complicated to say with a straight face that there is a chance for a better future when international capital cant stop destroying everything it can for profit ! It's just difficult to see the potential light at the end of the tunnel, even the "incemental change" i hear so much about seems like a pipe dream ... Everything that could harm the profit of the "big boys" does not get the spotlight and the citizens seem only filled with hate for there fellow man and driven by nothing but self interest.

A change can be made, but don`t expect changing the world or a country. You can impact what you can see and touch in person on daily basis, you want a group of people that care for each other and don`t let anyone behind? Then build it, not hard to build a tight family or a tight community in a lifetime.

I love this game so much. The communist route was incredibly tragic despite the freaking moralists writing the story. You could definitely tell communism is a real thing in the game, no matter how surreal its aesthetics were portrayed to be. It definitely didn't get the faschism treatment. Besides, it is clear that society could build impossible structures with the power of communism, wdym?
@deadrat5555 Жыл бұрын
About the "moralists writing the story" part - well, I actually believe the writer behind disco elysium is very much a leftist and a marxist. Just take a look at how different ideologies are presented in the game. Ultraliberals - greedy hustlers, Moralists - apathetic people with no opinions, Fascists - wömen and immigrants haters. Communism is the only ideology that is shown as a structural political thought and the writer tried (and succeeded imo) to show his own beliefs in a critical way

This is another reason why I love this game. I went nowhere near the communism route of the game, but still thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of revachol and putting the pieces together. I played moralist the whole way through, and it is still interesting how almost everyone else I have talked to about this game went communist.
@fishsteakyelk341 Жыл бұрын
The game is essentially a love letter to communism it was well known even before the developers straight up admitted it at a reward show. It’s critical towards communist ideology but also those who follow it, vanguardists, Left Communists, Defeatists, all sorts. The game itself is saying that previous attempts at achieving communism were flawed but ultimately did a lot of good and the power of capital and the bourgeoisie did everything they could to violently erase any chance for a chance for a liberated humanity. Just looking around the city, it’s absolutely shit the Union is corrupt as hell, ruins are everywhere, the cops are shitheads, and a company can easily send armed mercs to suppress a strike and get away with murder. The Deserter and some other history in the city brings up just how violent the landing of the coalition (aka NATO) was and how many they murdered to maintain bourgeois power. The game itself is saying that we should be critical of communism but also learn about it and how previous attempts at achieving it worked but also telling us that revolution won’t be allowed by the powers of Capital that they will violently suppress any attempt even if it means destroying a entire nation. “Who calls a operation against 50 million Death Blow?” But unlike the Deserter’s defeatism we see in the city that there’s still struggle and conflict between workers and capitalists. The conditions are still there for class struggle and revolution for as long as capitalism exists there will always be a class exploited and suffers the most for the benefit of a few who are more often born into it. Capitalism creates the conditions that lead to it’s own destruction whether it be because of the myth of infinite growth driving profit destroying our planet, or by falling due to the workers finally rising up. Overall Disco Elysium is definitely a left wing game and I would even call it a communist game but one that also asks us to learn from the past attempts and remember at how Capitalism responded. “UN JOUR JE SERAI DE RETOUR PRÈS DE TOI” One day I will return to your side Girl Child Revolution.

@@mattl1862 , Holodomor was not a thing, it was a natural disaster, a famine. Сrop failure was in western ukraine toom, but at that time it wasn't part of the USSR. At that time, famine was in a large part of the USSR. And if you use term Hohlodomor you mean that the famine was intentional and that's simply not true. And if look closer to russian history there were dozens famines long before the revolution. Do you know who first said about the so-called Katyn massacre? Nazi intelligence. Do you really belive nazi propaganda? But i have to say that there was a part of polish captives who were sentenced to death by soviets. And do you know why? Because of soviet-polish war, these people were responsible for the deaths of Soviet POWs during the war.
