The commanding officers and their staffs were still functioning. They could communicate with each other about - supposed troops still able to fight under their command; - supposed fuel, ammo and other vital supplies at their disposal; - supposed positions, direction and numbers of the enemy forces; At this point, in my opinion, the war on the German side had devolved in a map exercise. It's like they were just playing a wargame while the answer to the above was: - most units had already disintegrated, their men running away and their officers just looking on Whenever one would seriously ask, where is the enemy, how many, where are they headed? The actual answer that noone in High Command dared to provide was: the enemy is *here* in overwhelming numbers.

Heinrici was an admirable commander. One of the only officers who thought in realistic terms, with no fear of Hitler. Krebs, on the other hand, was just another cowardly yes-man, an appeaser.
@chaptermasterpedrokantor16233 жыл бұрын
Well, don't jump on the Heinrici worship wagon too eagerly. The man did fight in Russia since Barbarossa. He knew about the atrocities that were being carried out in the rear by the einsatzgruppen, the anti-partisan divisions, the food that was stolen from the Soviet people (the German army lived off the land in occupied Russia), the hunger that it caused, the mass rape of Soviet women (up to 10 million), the shooting of the political commissars and the deliberate mass murder of Red Army POW's. He was fortunate that like Halder he got to 'write' his own history as part of the US Army historical department, but like all German commanders on the Eastern Front he was a war criminal.
@lorimeyers38393 жыл бұрын
@@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623 yes, I am not denying that. I am aware. But the fact that he was one of the only people to disobey Hitler openly at the end warrants him some credit. These actions don’t justify the atrocities he carried out earlier in the war. I’m just saying, he had some balls to reject Hitler.
@chaptermasterpedrokantor16233 жыл бұрын
@@lorimeyers3839 Him not being part of Hitler's incrowd probably played no small part. Hitler never liked him. Probably why he never rose above army command for most of the war. So when he did make it to the fuhrer bunker he only got to see the surreal era. Not the earlier era when the man could be charming and sane. And we have to keep in mind that unless his account of those meetings is confirmed by other sources it might be just as suspect as those of Guderian, Manstein and Halder, under whom he would work later as part of the US Army history department. He might have changed what happened in those meetings to make himself look better.

BRAVO! I feel like I am again a fly on the wall in the various German headquarters facing a desperate situation. The Soviet army was well equipped and massive. The Germans were outnumbered 10 to 1 in fighting personnel, lacked operational equipment, fuel, food, ammunition, artillery, air support and moral was critically low. Generals Heinrici, Manteuffel and Busse knew the reality of the rapidly collapsing situation. Hitler, Keitel and Krebs were living in an alternate reality. All of this is made so clear in this outstanding video.

Paulus listened to Hitlers orders from Berlin at Stalingrad until it was way to late, and sacrificed the men of the 6th army. This happened when Von Manstein , who was the commander of the relief forces, pleaded with Paulus to withdraw towards him. Steiner listened to Hitler, not Von Manstein and lost everything. Perhaps Steiner had this on his mind when he refused to commit his forces into a battle that was already clearly lost.
