Since 1970, more than 90 perfect of all U.S. dairy farms have closed due to low milk prices and industry restructuring. Recently, a corporate decision by Walmart led to the shutdown of a three-generation family-run dairy farm in Kentucky. We followed the Coombs family as they’re forced to sell off the last of their dairy cows and try to make sense of what’s ahead.

Nestle (Coffee Mate, Nesquik, ad nauseum) did something very similar to a processing plant for dairy products near my home in southern Utah. My father has a trucking company. He hauled Nestle products nearly exclusively from the plant. Nestle decided to create their to own distribution company and devastated my dad's business. Over $400,000 in revenue went out the door. Big box, big business, big anything ruins America on a grand scale. I salute this family for all they have done and shed a tear for what they've lost.

So your trying to tell people that it's "Wrong" to improve your situation/ position in life? Nestle sounds like they where trying to save money by reducing over head expenses, potentially increasing overall revenue.. or maybe just wanted to be more independent then reallying on farmers or who ever. Instead they got to a point and decided to expanded there process line by opening there own process in pant/s..

I disagree. Stores like Walmart have made it possible for many rural communities to even still exist. If it weren't for the ability to shop for a great variety of items in one local place many small towns would just disappear. The largest threat to Walmart is not "local" markets, it's online markets like Amazon. This dairy farmer might should get a job driving a delivery truck for FedEx, UPS or the USPS. I just got a notice that UPS is increasing it's rates by 4.5% in January. It's not because of hard times, it's because that's where the money is--home delivery, even to rural homes is the big thing now.

FYI: American government contributed around $22.2 billion in direct and indirect subsidies to the dairy sector in 2015. The problem is that dairy producers have to increase production to remain viable but this suppresses prices which in turn encourages more production. The net result is the family farm loses out to factory farms. Now to offset this made in America problem Trump is blaming Canadian dairy marketing boards. Canada has been traditionally a closed market for importing as well as exporting dairy and really does not factor into the equation. Even if Trump managed to open the border it will not stop the cycle of production increasing and the suppression of milk prices, it would only buy a decade of time for the smaller producers. You can look up milk production numbers between the two countries and see how small of a market Canada is for the American industry. Canada does not prop up her dairy industry with tax dollars but relies on the principle of income stability for dairy farmers and affordable/safe dairy products for the consumer.
@rosestewart1606
@rosestewart1606 6 жыл бұрын
Mr. Nonamanadus exactly and small farms don't require daily antibiotics and all of the other chemicals found in American milk. They don't need to use growth hormones to increase milk production if they have a guaranteed buyer for their milk. If a cow on a small farm gets mastitis they can be separated from the herd...easy when you have only 80 cows, impossible when you have 800. Destroying the Canadian dairy industry is not going to fix this. It's a domestic issue that Americans need to fix for themselves.

It's not walmart. It's anti-competitive business practices. Corporate milk processors open massive factory farms where they sell the milk to themselves for below cost driving farms out of business. The massive production of milk with hormones drives the cost below production then your taxes support the failing farms as long as they can find someone to sell it to. Which they can't since they own the processing facility. See my other post on here.

American milk production is just too high, because of subsidies. They have been protecting their farms with subsidies which lead to more farms, for decades the US has been pouring milk down drains because of the price was so low but the farms were protected from the impacts by subsidies. American farm subsidies don't go directly to the farmer. It's predominantly in the form of school lunch programs, food stamps, and WIC. The surplus happened about 5 years ago when milk prices rocketed to $25/cwt and everyone and their grandmother expanded their cowherd to make a bigger profit. Then supply and demand caught up with them.

Truly a shame to see. I hate seeing small farms disappear. It happens around me in SE WI. Everyone developing their land. But this guy should try to stick with his farm, sell the cows and row crop. Or maybe rent some of the land to nearby farmers to make payments. I just couldn't stomach leaving a beautiful farm like this behind completely.

Don Wick I am anti-abuse of animals. Cows are repeatedly and forcibly impregnated only to have their babies taken away from them the moment they are born. They are hooked up to machines that take their milk and get infections and medical problems because of this. It is completely unnatural and unnecessary. We literally do not need to consume dairy to survive. So it's selfish of us to use these animals just for our selfish desires. I don't wish for people to lose their way of living, but this is a huge win on the behalf of all cows! We don't need to bring them into this world only to be tortured. :(

Don Wick So when it comes down to it, believe me when I say, dairy and meat farmers is really the last people society and the earth needs right now. Yes I'm sure they loved what they did. But just because you love doing something doesn't justify it to be okay. And in case your wondering, the dairy business is going somewhere, out of business. Why? Because the vegan social movement is the fastest growing movement in the world :). If those industries disappear, it would really take a huge boulder off our backs. Because that will give us more time to plan how we will slow down the environmental damage, and eventually save the ecosystem.

My mother's family we're dairy farmer's back in the day ( 1943-1962 ) in West Texas. It's an amazing job our farmer's do. I was born and raised in the 70's in southern California and not many kids at school new where their lunch came from, let alone the cotton their clothes came from.. I always was fascinated when we'd go stay in the summertime, or visit in December for Christmas. So much work!! Lordy!! But I'm eternally grateful for everything I learned, everything I was taught. I am very respectful of what these families do for the world, while a lot of the time they do without. Thank you farmer's for EVERYTHING, literally everything. I'm sitting on my bed getting ready to go to bed, and my sheets, pajamas, my quilt, my tissue, and my bowl of ice cream ( after my nice dinner ) is making me comfortable, warm and fed tonight, and every night. Thank you dearly for all you do!! 🙏💓🤗

Hey Mr. Dairy Farmer, why don't you talk about what happens to those cows you love so much, like the one you named Kay, when they can no longer produce money--I mean, milk for you? You act like you were forced to sell your dairy cows to slaughter--like you've never done it before, when in reality, it's something you do ALL the time. And why don't you talk about what happens to the male calves that you can't use and exploit? These cows are nothing but a product. You wouldn't "care" for them otherwise. There are dairy farms that have transitioned to farming other kinds of goods--like oat milk--and it's worked out better for them. Maybe look into that and you can still have your farm without the need to exploit the innocents.

I CANT STAND WALMART, I boycotted them for 15years( how many people joined me-0, except my new bride, she wasn't happy about it) Its time to free the slaves, find new jobs, and find a way to deal with it. Here is an idea, turn your dairy in to a sanctuary and let tourists come a reconnect with the animals we use and realize that they have a life to live as well, that they are not here for us but because of us breeding them for slavery and its up to us to care for them. They have a brain and a central nervous system, the have a family and they don't want to die!

EVERY COW is slaughtered at around 4 years old. All this for a food that makes us fat and sick. But feel sorry for the humans in that scenario because they have to grow something else on their farm. I grew up on a dairy farm and I love cows. They are intelligent, loving, and wonderful mothers. I am also sympathetic to the small farmers who are pushed out of business because of huge corporations like "Walmart". Because of this all of the mom and pop shops closed... WHY? Because that is what consumers wanted. We the consumers decided that it was worth it to get rid of the service we once had by people who knew their products for cheaper products. On that note I made the connection to realize that what these cows go through is horrific. These animals are more often then not kept in filthy pens and forced to walk in their own urine and feces. They often slip on the concrete they are forced to walk on and end up lame. They are bred to give birth to a calf every single year so that the Dairy Farmer can sell the milk that belongs to these cows babies. The newborn calves are immediately taken from their mothers and put into small calf pens never having the chance to bond with their mothers. The cows cry for days calling for their calves. Many of these calves (if they are male calves) are killed immediately. left out in the elements to starve and dehydrate to death or they are sold to veal farmers where the calves suffer a horrible life until they are slaughtered. A cow will end up in 4 to 5 years becoming spent. Her body exhausted from giving birth every 9 months, milked 2 to 3 times per day, and when she no longer can produce enough milk for the Dairy Farmer her reward is to be hauled off to a slaughterhouse where she is stunned, hung by her back legs and then she will have her throat slit open so that she bleed out. Again I feel for this family but they can grow crops and make money instead of exploiting these wonderful sentient beings.

My mother's family had one of the most respected dairy herds in southern Minnesota, but the farm went broke in the early 90's and the herd was dispersed in an auction. It was demoralizing to see 3 generations of blood, sweat and sacrifice end that way. But economics is economics. How much hand-wringing went on as workers who built typewriters lost their jobs when computers and word processors took over the market? Are you advocating that we should have banned the computer in order to save those jobs? I don't think you're going to win that argument. I will note: there are roughly the same number of dairy cows in the county my Grandpa/Uncle's farm is located in now as there were when they had to sell the herd. However, the number of family farms has shrunk 75%. Again, it's the stark reality of economics. To be competitive, you must harness the economies of scale...or develop a niche market.
