I watched the whole documentary. What I didn’t like was the fact that they did so much victim blaming in regards to Phil Hartman that I actually at some parts found myself ALMOST sympathizing with Brynn. Then I had to snap back to reality and remember she killed her husband in his sleep with her children in the house! What was up with everyone talking about her like she was such a saint and not a murderer, and then with Phil they would say he was aloof and distant. No ones perfect but I feel like they spent more time on his imperfections than hers. He was workaholic and probably a bit awkward and shy. Plus maybe he wanted to get away from crazy eyes that kept nagging him about movie roles every 5 seconds. R.I.P. Phil, one of the funniest comedians of all time.
@HuntersMoon735 жыл бұрын
And she also hired a private investigator to film him when he was with friends! Like you, I thought it was victim blaming.

i think the truth is their relationship was toxic and they were equal participants UNTIL SHE KILLED HIM. neither of them got what it sounds like they expected out of the marriage. she wanted to be famous and desired (by her husband as well as hollywood) and he wanted a trophy bride content to sit by the sidelines.

Wow, you can see from the clips of his audition tape for SNL just how much Phil LOVED performing. That's the first real footage in this documentary of Phil performing as he was hitting his comedic stride, & it's so striking because it's such a contrast to all of the footage & photos of him 'being himself'. He has looked so uncomfortable in every shot from 'real life'--his smiles look false, his eyes are cold & distant, he looks deeply ill-at-ease & like he's presenting a front 24-7 while the real Phil is hiding somewhere behind his own eyes. When he's in 'real life', he looks like a fish out of water. And then suddenly the footage of him auditioning, & he looks so...happy. He looks like he's where he belongs, doing exactly what he loves doing, & he is ENJOYING it so much. His eyes are warm, his whole personality is warm. It's hard to describe, but it's so obvious because of the contrast to all the shots & footage of him up until this time.

What irks me about the news coverage of this tragedy and the comments on this doc was/is the victim blaming and judgmental holier than thou arm chair psychologists inferring an "the poor woman was taken hostage by cocaine" or "he had to be cheating on her for her to do this" or "he had to be abusive" narrative when they had no idea what was going on between them.. Only the people in a relationship know what it is really like when they are alone. We all have issues! The people I have known who were the most judgmental are the same ones who hate to be judged themselves.. The people who knew them both say he was a good guy even as he was hard to know because of "putting up walls" and she was insanely jealous both of any women he was working with and of his having a much more successful career than her. She couldn't even get a gig as Hee Haw eye candy.. Women like that often use sexism or such as an excuse when it might just be that she had no talent.. He DID! Men who "put up walls" often do so because they have been burned badly by being around people who constantly belittle them and their talents and try to cut them down to their own size so they can feel better about themselves..
