Historically speaking, the inaccuracies (especially the whitewashing some of some of Puyi's more negative characteristics) are likely due to it being based on Puyi's autobiography. The film does ignore the tragic fates of his wife and chief concubine. Puyi did have other concubines so, perhaps with the exception of his brother, he probably wasn't too attached to anyone. I agree that the late Ryuichi Sakamoto's score is magnificent, plus he played a truly sinister villain. Great cinematography, color grading, and practical on-location shots. I do rewatch it on occasion (benefits from being projected onto a big screen). It did get me interested in this often-neglected corner of WWII history.
