EMP only temporarily knocks out devices, and depending on location, type of device, and a number of other factors, they may still function without repairs after the EMP has passed. I assume in a civilization that has such a preoccupation with nuclear power and weapons that many systems would be hardened against EMP. But that's merely a guess, even if it's backed up by the number of still-operating computers in the Fallout world.

Most government networks don't necessarily cross paths, but there is still the matter of if any mainframes survived the EMP from the nukes in the first place. Robots only have a finite memory capacity. We know The Institute likely had surviving hardware given the presence of it in older sections of the complex, but I know of no college or university networks that connect to state run mainframes directly. It's all a puzzle really. Speaking of EMP from nukes, wouldn't the destruction of The Institute create a strong EMP wave in the local area around it? Many a computer would likely be out of commission without safety measures.

Thats troublesome because Ironsides may represent what the good the old Commonwealth once was but its not genuine. It was the past and expecting the scavengers to understand is wrong... the scavengers are what they are: people just trying to get by in this day and age. Ironsides has a right to defend... however, do think what would have happened if Ironsides makes it to the sea? Eventually (assuming they can make it) someday they will come across another broken part of the world and hold his old ideals on these people and its your responsibility for wasting time and resources to take away from the people's potential.

*not saying the Brotherhood would let the scavengers take the ship. Would depend how you're role playing. If you're a dedicated BOS soldier, you may see these robots as a potential danger to humanity. They're gaining independent thought and could eventually rise beyond all their programming, viewing the Wastelanders as their true enemy. Ironsides already reprograms robots to serve his purposes so amassing an army of loyal robots isn't improbable. Very least, no true BOS soldier would choose robots over humanity.

I personally agree with those who wanted a Minutemen ending on this quest. Preston could've called the Minutemen from the Castle, fighting through the scavengers, then guarding the ship. Eventually guiding it correctly to the Atlantic.

Fun fact about "Old Ironsides" her exceptionally thick hull as you describe it wasn't the only reason that cannons had trouble piercing the hull of the Constitution. The Constitution's hull was made by layering hard and soft woods, which created an effect like some modern day body armors. I'm not sure if the constitution was the first to use this construction method but it wasn't common at the time.

Justin David I watched a documentary way back when that said that the more were these old school Chinese sailing ships that had fortified front ends to ram the other ship. If I recall they fortified it in a similar way. Wood layering with a metal plate on the front. And this was like way way way back when they were still one of the only countries with gun powder.

Now doing my homework. The reason she got the nickname "Old Ironsides". Is her encounter and victory against the HMS Guerriere. During the battle. The Constitution fired and struck the Guerriere's mizzenmast and reduced maneuverability of the British Warship because of it dragging in the water. The Guerriere unable to maneuver ends up crashing right into the side of the Constitution. Rigging of both ships become tangled and Guerriere's bow gun in effective range. Fires. Though only destroying the Captain's Quarters. Both ships' Captains did an order for boarding but do to the heavy seas. Neither could board the other effectively. Through the course of the battle. Both ships start to twist and were now broad side one another. The Constitution fires a few more broadsides into the British ship causing more heavy damage. The waves and weather finally ripped both ships apart. Causing the masts of the Guerriere to collapse. Basically making the Guerriere a floating hulk of a mess. So in turn suffering a third of her crew loses to death and wounding. The British surrender. The Captain of the Constitution did surprise the British with the Constitution's strong broadside and sailing ability. That the British guns could not punch through the hull of the American Warship. It was stated that an American sailor cried out, "Huzzah! Her sides are made of Iron!" That is where the old girl got her nickname "Old Ironsides". As for the HMS Guerriere after this fight. Well, the ship was so badly beaten that she was impossible to tow back to port. So the American Captain ordered the British crew to be taken on board and the ship burned. On making it back to homeport. The crew of the USS Constitution found out word spread rather fast of their battle and were hailed as heroes.

Synths are indistinguishable from humans save for the one chip inside them. Them being able to be turned off can just be put down to hypnosis. It's a real thing. You can "program" a human into responding to certain stimulus. People with PTSD who have panic attacks from a sound or smell are effectively hypnotized to react that way.

On the subject of morality, I believe the robots are in the right. They just want to be left alone, they have not attacked, only defended themselves. When considering Codsworth, Curie, KL-E-O, P.A.M., or the robots of Grey Garden: I believe many robots left active for 200 years have become self aware. Maybe not truly people like Gen 3 Synths, but AI none the less. I was thinking the same thing only more in the context of my playthrough being a railroad agent, and applying the values of my role-play would make the decision clear. If I were doing a BoS playthrough it might be a different story.

Well it's a question of what defines a man? The conflict with the Institute vs the Railroad really is one where the Institute says: "We built them, they are machines meant to service us". While the Railroad says: "They're sapient beings with their own thoughts and desires, and that's enough to warrant personhood and freedom". The interesting question for me is the Robots. We see time and time again in the Fallout Universe robots that have achieved Sapience. Have in fact transcended into True AI really. From ED-E in the Mojave, to Codsworth and CVRIE in Fallout 4. And Ironsides would be one of them as well. He CHOSE to overcome his own initial programming, chose to adopt a lifestyle he believed in, and chose his own goals and purpose, ideals and culture. The problem for me is Bethesda really swerves that question outside of Gen 3 Synths because of CVRIE. Even though as a robot she definitely showing such sapience and desires like Ironsides does. Choosing her own fate, to bypass or negate her programming, even her own desires to leave her post and explore the world... the game's script after Memory Interrupted, when you put her in a Gen 3 Synth Body tries to act like the robot CVRIE didn't have those things. That it was only after being turned into a Synth that she had any glimmer of emotion, desires, goals, independence, etc. It's a really odd thing. I'm not sure if it was just a left hand not telling the right what it was doing storyline and thematically, or if it was a case of just some blindness to the questions they were bringing up and why it wouldn't apply to Robots with similar traits.

Like there are some robots out there who are completely self reliant and know exactly what's happening... Like that assultron in Goodneighbor. Another example is Curie like you mentioned. Or even the bartender in the third rail. I highly doubt someone programed him to be a sketchy mob guy. Just seems alot of robots developed their own ideas and changed from their former programing... I always kinda figured the scavengers would double-cross you, and I like robots, especially ones who fight only for self-defense. That automatically makes them better than at least half of the humans you meet in Fallout 4 since a big chunk are raiders, gunners, or some other unscrupulous people and they usually try to kill you. The captain certainly acts like a naval officer. Except that he drafts you because he can and expects you to immediately snap to it when he says to do things. The real world USS Constitution's "active" status is maintained by the fact that they periodically take her to sea. So she's a functional, if antiquated vessel. Oh and the UCMJ also requires the military to pay you. :p Granted the pay structure is different, but unless Captain Ironsides is going to give me a salary, then he's gonna have to settle for what he gets.

Can't see how anyone could seriously argue which side of this is the morally good choice. The scavengers are out for themselves, and their argument that they're not attacking people is irrelevant, because they're not holding back from harming humans for any reason beyond the simple circumstances that there aren't humans on board. As soon as a human gets in their way--as soon as a human does so much as dip a little into their profit margin--the majority of them have *no qualms* about killing that human, and even those that do, like Mandy, will still support that majority enough to be there to take part in it. It's situational circumstances, not moral convictions or personal beliefs, that separate this group of scavengers from groups like the Gunners. The real irony here is that many of the most valuable salvageable items to be found on the ship are those taken from elsewhere in the Commonwealth. Instead of teaming up to take a single ship of robots, these scavengers could have worked together in a group like this to take a location like the Corvega plant, somewhere with a ton more salvage (some of it apparently similar to what's on the ship to begin with) and considerably lesser defenses (even a well-fortified raider gang is child's play compared to a ship of combat robots with height advantage and canons). These fools could have been getting more with fewer casualties and doing the Commonwealth some good, if they weren't so short-sighted and stubborn.

This is genuinely one of- if not the best quest I've played in a game. Ever. Captain Ironsides is so funny and amazing, he's unique and especially as a sentry bot the fact you get to talk to him and play pirates and sailors with him is wonderful. I think even the baby of Stalin and Hitler would say you're a heartless bastard for turning on the crew. While the scavengers could use the caps the scrap brings it doesn't make it any less bad. These bots welcomed you onto their ship and even hundreds of years after Nuclear anhilation and thousands if not tens of thousands of caps worth of scrap and weapons on them they've persisted and toughed it through, still wanting to fight and die for us, even if it was programmed, just because helping poor scavengers is good doesn't make killing the bots not bad. It's less morally gray and more like a flaming battle of white vs. black depending on your personal stance, either way you gotta be pure evil to not atleast hesitate a little about killing them with all their funny, awesome quirks and incredible resiliance. For them to survive longer then 8 entire generations of people and for you to be the one that snuffs out that flame of resiliance that could go on to be helpful and useful for centuries to come is just h*cked up my dood.

I'm really glad that I helped the robots the very first time I played through this quest, especially after I've seen the other ending now! I still think that seeing it launch and hit the other building was by far the best quest end in the whole game. It certainly made laugh anyway!

I gotta say, I do not agreed with the whole "I'm a scavenger too" thing and I don't think is immoral to kill them and this is why: first of all, we do not board the ship to scavenge it, we do because we are "invited" by Ironsides crew; second, as you show in this brilliant video, no mater what you do to help the scavengers, in the end they still want to kill you. I know, at the time you don't know that and It's is a choice of robot over human but at the end, it was the robots the most human ones in this quest. I love this quest, the characters are spot on and all that work just to end in the top of another building? Classic. Sorry for the bad grammar (English is not my native language and didn't had the opportunity to write in a while). Keep up the good work and please continue to "peel" the wonderful world of Fallout!

I chose Ironside because my historic side wants the constitution to continue it's fight, they may be robots but they're living beings as well, the scavengers are trying to make a living but they don't care about the well being for others only themselves, this may be the apocalypse but civilization is rebuilding and there are rules again but people like raiders, a few scavengers, and etc. are breaking them just for themselves. That's all I have to say

I don’t want to join The Brotherhood of Steel, or The Railroad, or the Institute, or the Minutemen. I only want to join Captain Ironsides and his crew, and cruise around helping the Commonwealth on their ship. Garvey will come aboard, install the coordinates a settlement that needs help into our guidance chip. And then we can go and crash our ship into the settlement. The settlement won’t/can’t need help, if there is no settlement. Comedy aside; What I did was side with Ironsides. What I did differently to some maybe most, was I killed Mandy and her crew of Davis and a couple of mercenaries in our first encounter. I know this sounds evil, but hear me out. Their group tried to kill the player (yes she says she wasn’t in on the attack, but then she also lied about helping orphans, and lied about splitting the reward with the player, then tried to kill the player again), then they tried to buy the player’s loyalty. Clearly they are terrible people only in it for themselves which makes them a threat to not only the player and the robots, but also any other survivors in the Commonwealth who has something that Mandy and her gang want. Therefore I made the decision to remove that threat, before anyone else was hurt. In these decisions every variable needs to be considered, both whatever is occurring in the now, and any future consequences to your actions. Back on how Mandy and crew decide to kill the player despite their help, who knows how many other people they’ve already done this to. I believe that siding with Captain Ironsides and his crew is the most ethical choice as they value life, are far more humane, and have deeper personality then the scavengers/raiders attacking them. Based off how the robots have developed their own personalities I’d go as far to say if it’s unethical to kill synths, then it is unethical to kill Captain Ironsides and his crew. I could go deeper into the comparison with synths, but I don’t want to make this comment a full on essay😂. Another thing that makes killing the robots unethical is the betrayal required. If they were evil then it’s fine. If your fighting for a side that you find out is evil, obviously it would be wrong to continue helping them. But the robots aren’t evil. Evidence of this is when the scavengers/raiders were trying to kill them, and Ironsides still told his crew to spare them if possible. They are not evil. They are honest, companionate, loyal and devoted to their mission. Also, unlike Mandy and her group, they’ll actually pay you for your efforts. They value hard work. But at the end of the day ethics and being morally good are merely concepts of our personal realities. As an example Thanos believed wiping out half the universe was ethical, however I’m pretty sure most of us would disagree. I know that’s from a movie, but I’m afraid that many people have grown soft, and may get offended if I apply a real world example that associates with them. So to spare myself the trouble of needless arguments we’ll just use Thanos.

@benjamin ramsey You must have missed the part about Thanos where I said; “I’m pretty sure most of us would disagree.” The keyword in that sentence being ‘us’. As for our other disagreement, I would argue that if you look at politics, and the left and right wing, you would see that both wings see themselves as good, and the other side as evil. Which is a real world example of good being a personal concept. Also just quickly, I’m more then happy to listen to and consider your points and ideas, so long as we can keep it civilised.

I think siding with Ironsides is more benevolent. He might be a robot but he is sentient, much like Codsworth, Ada, and Nick, all of whom are also trustworthy and good. Plus Ironsides likely really does want to defend the Eastern coast while the scavengers will only care about themselves and are not going to spare you even if you side with them while Ironsides only attacks if you betray them

I dunno, that Deathclaw over in the North-eastern part of 4's map is pretty soft and cuddly if you give their egg back. Even gets the other deathclaws in its territory to give you a hand sometimes afterwords.

I role-play that, as the General of the Minutemen, I make a deal with Ironsides, so that if he ever makes it to the Atlantic, that he will captain the Constitution as the Flagship of the Minutemen Navy. If the scavengers attack our flagship... well, do I need to explain?
