I had this as a monologue when I did a production of a Thurber Carnival, it struck a deep chord even back then in the 90s and I can recall the audience reaction of utter silence. The world was a different place back then and this piece really resonates even more now. I think James Thurber was a wise man. It was a fun show to do and covered a huge range of emotions for both the cast and audience. I can recall really trying not to break character and bust out laughing at times in other scenes especially the surgery scene. Timeless and classic. Poignant.

The first time I read this poem was the 1967-68 school year. That was seventh grade. Fifty-seven years later it still inspires and affects me.
