Very sad to see these locomotives just being run into the ground! But considering the state of affairs in Zimbabwe not surprising. Thanks for the video!

Even though it is sad to see these locomotives cut up, I can understand why they are doing it, it's just too expensive to maintain them.

I grew up with steam train around me, back in Southern Rhodesia and Zimbabwe. I wrote about a Zimbabwean steam train in my book, Sam Edward the Steam Train, Lulu Press Ltd.

This is a rather bizarre video. We see a fully functional steam locomotive getting serviced, and yet people are cutting steam locomotives up for scrap right next to it. If anyone can give me more information on this video I would be happy to hear it. Although sad, it is good you filmed the steam locomotives getting cut up because hardly any footage exist of the scrapping of steam locomotives.

Why would a company which is in the business of operating steam locomotives also scrap them. If the railroad no longer used steam engines it would make more sense. But you are scrapping some valuable assets which could be used as a parts source or back up locomotives.

This is Zimbabwe. It's economy collapse 20 years ago and together with sanctions imposed on the Mugabe regime, which have yet to be lifted, there is no money or the ability to buy spare parts for engineering equipment from the West. So, when something breaks, it cannot be mended. Hence, the production from the coal mine has steadily been decreasing over the years as equipment wears out and cannot be replaced or repaired. The coal mine's own steam locomotives ceased to function many years ago, so they have borrowed one of the three remaining serviceable locomotives from NRZ (National Railways of Zimbabwe) for the daily shunt of one or two wagons. The engines being cut up, so that the coal mine can earn a few $'s for the scrap metal, were built for the coal mine by Henschel or North British in the early 1950's. The last two remaining Bayer Peacock garrets owned by the coal mine were taken out of service in 2007. There has been talk of repairing them, but there is simply not the resources to do so. And it is probably now too late.

Even Further Rail Interestingly enough the Rhodesians managed OK despite sanctions. A friend of mine used to own a factory in Harare for making things like locomotive wheels and boilers until about 6 years ago.

Boilers for what? Rhodesia didn't manufacture any steam locomotives. Ian Smith was propped up by apartheid South Africa. Mugabe received no help from the ANC after he trashed the economy, other than not organising a coup against him.

unbelievable in 2017 they are still cutting up steam loco's, by now every engine still in one piece should be preserved and restored for future mankind or re-use parts like cylinder castings, wheels etc which are almost impossible to manufacture nowadays for engines still running! The price of scrap metal won't come even near the value of technology of the olden days! It's like cutting up the Mona Lisa painting for it's linnen cloth !!!

A sad sight indeed but it's no good bleating on and on about it on a video for it's up the owners of the locos what they want to do with them and if their decision is to scrap them then so be it. Where could they run elsewhere in the world. Yes there are plenty of places with Cape Gauge but the loading gauge is also important and probably more so. Australia has four states that have Cape Gauge but these locos wouldn't be able to steam on any of them because their too wide and too high. This is why British steam can travel the world but the world's steam locos can't travel to Britain because standard gauge locos from other countries are just too wide and high for Britain's mainline railways.

Cutting 'em up. Never a smart thing to do, yet has been repeated ever since there existed creations to cut up. Sad. A few smart humans create, but the overwhelming majority just take it all for granted.
