The Last German Emperor, Living in Exile in The Netherlands 1918-1941
Wilhelm II or William II (German: Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert; English: Frederick William Victor Albert) (27 January 1859 -- 4 June 1941) was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia, ruling the German Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia from 15 June 1888 to 9 November 1918. He was a grandson of the British Queen Victoria and related to many monarchs and princes of Europe. Crowned in 1888, he dismissed the Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, in 1890 and launched Germany on a bellicose "New Course" in foreign affairs that culminated in his support for Austria-Hungary in the crisis of July 1914 that led to World War I. Bombastic and impetuous, he sometimes made tactless pronouncements on sensitive topics without consulting his ministers, culminating in a disastrous Daily Telegraph interview that cost him most of his power in 1908. His generals dictated policy during World War I with little regard for the civilian government. An ineffective war leader, he lost the support of the army, abdicated in November 1918, and fled to exile in the Netherlands.

I have a soft spot for Wilhelm. He was made to be the bad guy out of the war but Austria was to blame. Fun fact: Huis Doorn, the place he called home in the Netherlands during exile, was the house Audrey Hepburn’s mother grew up in before it was sold to him.

Wilhelm was envious of the Russian, British & French’s great empires. He leapt at the chance to wage war on them. The Austrians went to him for his backing with their offensive against Serbia and he agreed. He knew that Serbia was allied with Russia who were allied with the French so backing the Austrian offensive would plunge the continent into war. He also invaded neutral Belgium knowing full well that it would draw the British into the conflict. At the end of the war when revolution broke out in Germany he commanded his generals to have the troops open fire on the people. It was at that point when his generals informed him that the German military were no longer going to take orders from him and that he and his son the crown Prince should abdicate. Also when Austria wanted an armistice with the alliances Germany contemplated declaring war on Austria! The Kaiser should of had the sense to stay out of the Austrian conflict with Serbia knowing the costs but he engaged anyway.

I went to Doorn. Sadly the nose of the Kaisers statue at the beginning of the video is broken now. I highly recomend to anybody visiting (or living) in the Netherlands to go there. The volunteers who run the place are very kind and do great tours around the house and Wilhelms rooms. The only problem is that you cannot visit the interior of the Kaisers mausoleum unless you have an authorization from the Hohenzollern family.

@@martincook318 Every major participant in WW1 carries some blame for starting the war including the one country that so far has escaped public blame entirely-that is the USA. France and Britain were the principle culprits. France was thirsting for revenge for their humiliation in 1870. Britain wanted to destroy a rival that was rapidly overtaking it in every sphere. Germany had every reason to fear the enemies surrounding it. There is abundant evidence that since Teddy Roosevelt's presidency, American Industrialists, Financiers, and Politicians were planning for a war with the British Empire. The American Military had 'Operation Red' tentatively scheduled for around 1922. Instead, America cleverly exploited all the great European Powers and their vanities, thereby taking all of them out as potential competitors in one fell swoop. To this day American diplomatic cables for that era are classified, but some of them did fall into the hands of Belligerents when European countries collapsed and captured Foreign Ministry records opened in the second world war-enough to make it clear what was afoot. Before he died Neville Chamberlain made it clear that he blamed America for playing the same game in 1939. Read the Life of Joseph Kennedy, Roosevelt's Ambassador to Britain. Kennedy disliked the British, but he also distrusted Roosevelt and was candid about many things that are not spoken about today.

+lukkyluciano Germany had basically won WW1 in 1916 and offered a peace treaty to France and England without restrictions. The boarders would have been restored to where they were before WW1 and neither France nor England would have to pay any war reparations. Germany had also treated the prisoners of war very kindly and payed them wages for the duration while incarcerated. The Balfour Declaration changed all of that.

@ Meneer Van dijk: Upon brief reflection, there are so many levels to this subtext. Without knowing much more than what appears under Clyde Wary's post, I think she (the queen of the Netherlands) may have been suggesting that it was shameful or disgraceful for the former Kaiser to now be doing manual labour. This reflects the profound disconnectedness of the "leisure class". I'm pleased to learn the man was not above rolling up his shirtsleeves and getting his hands dirty putting in an honest day's hard work. I find myself wondering what sort of place the operatic world would have turned out to be if it came to light that the barber of Seville was, in fact, a marqués...

It is also my opinion that a restoration would be impossible. 1. Federal governments are not typically overthrown by or voted out in favor of monarchies. Not saying it would never happen, but 99% certainty is good enough for me. 2. Prince Georg Friedrich (the heir to the throne) does not want to be a German monarch. He seems content with his semi private life and probably realizes the difficulties of trying to...well...overthrow the federal government. 3. Too many firsts. A German monarch has never ruled over the current German borders. The Kaiser was and old school Prussian at heart and not a constitutional monarch. He also was not King of Germany. That's a title that hasn't been used since the Holy Roman Empire, and was NEVER used by a Hohenzollern. Why would it be a problem to begin using that title for a Prussian prince? Hmm, ask any Habsburg.

(From Austria-Hungary and Russia) Real culprit of the war was the terrorists who attacked the Austrian prince (who was very progressive!), after that Serbia for defending the terrorist attack and then Austria. Germany was simply aiding their ally. Just because one guy is bigger doesn't mean he is always responsible in a fight.
@DonMeaker
@DonMeaker 9 жыл бұрын
Spartiatai300 Except Serbia didn't defend the terrorist attack. They actually went most of the way to agreeing to Austria Hungary's ultimatum. Of course the Ultimatum was written so that noone could agree with it because Austria Hungary wanted war. Germany was in a defensive alliance with Austria Hungary. They were not required to back Austria Hungary if the latter invaded, and the other party to that treaty, Italy, indeed didn't. Germany wasn't aiding their ally, they were using events as an excuse for what they wanted.

It is ironic that the man who contributed more than the other leaders (many of them his relatives) came out the best for a leader who ended being on the losing side. The former Russian Tsar and his entire family butchered by communists, the former Austrian Emperor and King of Hungary Karl died a young man in his Madeira exile but Kaiser Bill lived a life of luxury and had plenty of money. The minor restrictions on his liberty were nothing compared to the harm that his decisions caused. Had he not foolishly given his blank check support to the ageing Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungry there would have been no WWI. Our entire 20th century would have been changed. No Nazism and no Communism. Thus no WWII and Holocaust on the one hand and the ruining of Russia and the loss of 30m to 40m people. +josefina bananos Kaiser Wilhelm II may have been vain, but far from stupid. He was actually very well educated. The atrocities brought about during WWI or the "Great War" was primarily due to political scandal and secret societies, such as the Black Hand that had instigated the event in the first place with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. You'll notice in the pictures and videos, the Kaiser oftentimes is seen holding his left arm, or having it bent slightly, holding a cane for example, or some other prop. This is due to the fact that his left arm was shorter than the right, a fact about which he was always self-conscious, even in his later years.

Wilhelm's left arm was shorter than his right arm. To compensate, he often held his left arm tight to his side, or put his left hand inside a pocket, or tucked an object under his arm to disguise how short it was. You can see how he did this in many shots of him in this video. To a proud man like Wilhelm, having a physical imperfection, even such an insignificant one as this, made him insecure and he tried to hide it.

I have read many of the comments and feel I should add my own as I have studied the life and mental attitude of "Kaiser Bill" His childhood was hell. Born with a withered shrunken arm, he was put through physical torture trying to correct it. This gave him an inferiority complex which clashed with his status as a future head of state. He grew up being highly jealous of the British Empire especially the Royal Navy. As an adult, be became arrogant and hot tempered which, as the Kaiser, made him a political time bomb, especially after he sacked Bismarck. Edward VII of England could not stand him AND Edward, despite his faults, was brilliant at foreign relations (Entente Cordial) When Austria decided to invade Serbia, the Kaiser gave military backing to Austria which had a chain reaction with all the treaties between the various nations. He knew this and refused to back down. It caused WW1 Many people say he was in the pockets of his generals. Sorry, he was the ultimate authority, especially in July/August 1914. He could have intervened but decided to allow events to unfold. To his dying day he showed no remorse. This is demonstrated by his telegram to Hitler congratulating him on his entry into Paris in 1940.

But he was aged 55 in 1914, (Born in Germany in 1859, to Germany's Frederick III and Victoria, Queen Victoria of England's eldest daughter, Kaiser Wilhelm served as emperor of Germany from 1888 until the end of World War). If you think that's old how can I trust your judgement on anything else? Does this sound familiar? "A month after the war began, Germany drew up some far-reaching war aims. French power would be broken, Belgium reduced to vassal status, and a colonial empire carved out in Africa and elsewhere. Mitteleuropa, a German-dominated customs union, would give Berlin economic hegemony". Thank heaven the UK voted Brexit!

If we're going to apportion blame for WWI, let's say, while ignoring Gavrilo Princip as the proximate cause: 1. Apis, 25 percent; 2. Berchtold + Hötzendorf, 20 percent; 3. Austro-Hungarian Schlamperei, 15 percent; 4. The Serbian government's partial knowledge of the Black Hand, etc., 10 percent; 5. German pseudoconstitutionality, 10 percent; 6. Wilhelm II, 7.5 percent; 7. Nicholas II 7.5 percent; 8. Maurice Paleologue, 5 percent; 9. Sergei Sazonov, 5 percent; 10. The failure of the old, tottering "Concert of Europe" to rein in Serbia before this, 5 percent. Yes, that's 110 percent. WWI was "overdetermined." And, if you have to look up more than one of those names, you probably shouldn't be commenting in public too much about "the cause" of WWI.

***** Given that the Black Hand wasn't folding up shop after June 28, and Pasic, and most the Serbian cabinet knew of their existence, and had some idea of what they were up to, if I upped Berchtold/Hotzendorf to 40 percent, I'd have to add the same amount more to the Serbian government.
@socraticgadfly
@socraticgadfly 8 жыл бұрын
***** That's irrelevant, Serbia's size and lack of vision. As a book "The July Crisis" notes, the whole (dying-out) Concert of Europe was guilty of failure to rein in Serbia. Besides, what you call "lack of vision" I call "deliberately chosen second vision." It's in the Serbian cultural DNA, as far as I can tell, as 1990s events showed.
@socraticgadfly
@socraticgadfly 8 жыл бұрын
@PowerdrillerPower First, as Bosnia 1990s showed, the Serbian "cockpit" of the former Yugoslavia had no problem passing suffering on to Bosniaks. Second, you need a better dictionary. The word "serf" comes from the Latin "servus." It has nothing to do with Serbia. The name "Serb" is related to the "Sorb" Slavic people of Brandenburg area. Third, on the etymology of "Slav," etymology isn't controlling of meaning., especially when you're trying to apply etymology in reverse. It actually, via Byzantine Greek, comes from some south Slavs, or proto-Slavs, name for themselves. The fact that the French "esclave" and eventually the English "slave" come from the word "Slav" has nothing to do with the fact of the word "Slav"'s derivation: foreigndispatches.typepad.com/dispatches/2004/10/slav_an_etymolo.html Fourth, through all of this, you're sounding more and more like a Serb apologist. So, per the other commenter, have YOU read Clark's "Sleepwalkers"? As someone sounding like a Serb apologist, you're starting to bespeak the "martyrdom" that's part of that Serb cultural DNA.
@socraticgadfly
@socraticgadfly 8 жыл бұрын
***** 1. Puhleeze on who the Bosnians were, let alone pejorative language. 2. "Slave" and its equivalents meant a whole range of things before chattel slavery in the new world. Try doing some reading about that, too. 3. That by no means negates what I said. 4. More mythological bullshit. The Serbs were also imperialist toward other Slavs. And, if we're dividing on Catholic/Orthodox lines, before the Protestant Reformation, the Western civilization they were allegedly defending wasn't fully Western. I will give you a kudo for being an in-the-tank defender of Serbian myth, and probably of pan-Slavism, too. Don't bother responding further, because I'm no longer listening.

+socraticgadfly a complete nonsense. The blame lies 100% with the UK -- Usury Kingdom. The power, wealth and ambitions (global control of all resources) of this essentially Anglo-Venetian oligarchy depended, and depends still, on the privilege of money creation in private hands, and the general secrecy of that unparalleled privilege. German finances were run differently (traditionally), and ergo more successfully, both for the state and community. This constant and almost annually increasing demonstration of the backwardness and degeneracy of the UK financial system had to be removed if the Anglo-Venetians were to prosper and indeed even survive. So it was arranged in the sleazy clubs and mansions of England both to induce a great war and above all to persist with it regardless of losses until the German model of honest administration of the industrial revolution and its enormous wealth potential were destroyed. To be replaced everywhere with this vampiric fraud of the most profound and abysmal privileges in human history, in the hands of a tiny clique of gangsters, masquerading as democracy.

Without an adult like Bismark looking after him he was an accident waiting to happen. Anyone wanting him back in power would be a sucker for punishment! The real tragedy of Kaiser Wilhelm lay with the moment of his birth, a breach birth where incompetent physicians pulling him out by his left arm, so damaged the nerve endings that the arm remained crippled for life! His mother also rejected him despite his attempts to win her love, resulting in an Aedipus Complex! His damaged arm resulted in a life-long attempt to assert himself by physical means to overcome his disability, such as sailing a small boat, literally single-handed, in extreme weather in the Solent, Isle of Wight, during Cowes Week. He also, with specially adapted shotguns, took part in shooting parties & became one of the best shots in Germany!! He was also expected to be a war lord, like Frederick the Great, when, in his heart, he most wanted to be an English-style country gentleman, a type he admired & envied, which, ironically, in exile in Doorn, he finally almost achieved until his death!! Perhaps his last years were his most peaceful & happiest at last! I feel that he was NOT an evil man, but, if understood, more to be pitied than hated, more victim than villain!!

I did not criticise him in any way, but based upon much that has been reported about him, simply offered an analysis of what made him the person he was, from a human point of view, NOT the stereotype offered by his critics & detractors who reduced him to a cut-out figure of evil! On the contrary, I've always believed that he was NOT a 2-dimensional symbol of a war lord, but a victim of his childhood & much maligned by history, being much more complex than his critics ever gave him credit for! If you think that I underated him, fine!! But saying that my comment was "underated" makes no sense & contributes nothing to a discussion of Wilhelm the man! Try to offer YOUR analysis of his character which so far has been absent! I didn't criticise him!! I beg to differ he didn't have the power to stop the war he tried but he didn't have the power to even control Germanys military.

Tragedy, buffoonery, Germany had the largest merchant fleet in the world,carried the largest part of the European migration B4 the war to all parts of the world. Albert Ballin German head of the Hamburg line, tried, along with other industrialists to keep peace with Germans trading partners, but the junkers that pandered to the Kaisers weakness for military solutions, won out. Many of the troop carriers that carried the American army to France in 1917 were German liners that were trapped in North America at the start of the war. Had Berlin given Ballin some idea of its plans, those ships would have been in homeward bound with food in 1914.

In 1914 the German merchant fleet was 2,090 ships with a gross tonnage of 5,164,,720. Britain's merchant fleet was had 8,587 ships with a gross tonnage of 18,892,089. Less than 33%

I understood that is precisely what he wanted and as he was a staunch anti-semite and believed Hitler would reinstate him as the Kaiser of the Nazi Germany.More interestingly perhaps is what he and his family lived on during his sojourn in Holland. It has been reported that his 'empty train' was in fact stuffed with war loot, so it is fair to assume that this helped more than a bit.

I once visited Huis Doorn, coincidentally a few months after a trip to Osborne House on the Isle of Wight - where the young 'Willy' would spend time with his grandmother and British family. Even then, he could be quite difficult to deal with, and Queen Victoria had a house built for him on the estate for when he stayed. The older Willy in asylum at Doorn seemed a quieter and happier man, judging by the excellent interpretive exhibitions at the museum and kept out of politics in deference to his Dutch hosts, but he sympathised with the Nazis and was intensely anti-semitic. However, Huis Doorn seems to have been a pleasant and warm home for the ex-Kaiser and Princess Hermine, his second wife, who managed the estate and had somewhat more moderate views that her husband. Interestingly, she returned to Germany after Wilhelm's death in 1941. She was captured and imprisoned by the Red Army, released and lived in a small flat guarded by the Red Guard in Frankfurt an der Oder until 1947, where she died of a heart attack, just 59 years old.

England was and remains jealous of Germany and its technological, industrial and scientific achievements. Since the beginning of the 20th century Britain decided it would go to war against Germany. Basically Britain first used the Polish and Serbs to spark the flame of war and then got the American, French and Russians to do the fighting... Ironically the policy of "divide and conquer" used by Britain caused the end of the British Empire and Europe ended up being controlled by the non European America and Russia.

The only person who was able to place pressure upon the Kaiser in the decade of 1901 to 1910 was King Edward VII of the British Isles, Because of all the family connections Edward was very influential as the last ruler in Europe of his generation. He was used to meeting members of family and discussing and settling matters of state without political interference. He was a noted Francophile and his influence upon republican France was as strong as upon the Monarchies. The incident in Sarajevo would have been dealt with behind closed doors if Edward was still alive. Unfortunately he succumbed to overeating and excessive smoking in 1910 and the Kaiser then had no restraints upon his political ambitions, The result World War I.

+MrPoupard So must be hanged along with him the ruling members of British establishment of the time especially the head of the foreign office Mr. Grey and Mr. Churchill as the first lord of the admiralty! Because they are the real war criminals, who started this unimaginable bloodbath war along with his puppets - France and Russia only to bring Germany down as the most dangerous rival in the world for the British Empire at the time both commercially and in military aspect!

MrPoupard For what ? Would the Allied Leadership who Declared War on Germany ,and rejected all peace terms ,until total destruction ,then imposed Versaille on Central Europe ,backed Red Revolution been hanged too ? That war was about wiping out Germany as world competition . It was European suicide for International Banking / World Communism.

Kaiser William ii was a warmonger. He had an obsession with trying to match Britain militarily and in so doing raised tensions. Whilst Germany cannot be blamed for WW1 to the same extent as it can for WW2 it was after all Germany that invaded Belgium on its way towards France which provided the trigger for the war on the Western Front i.e. Germany was the aggressor.

Yesah, an "aggressor" after France and Russia declared war First, and simultaneously. The von Schlieffen Plan dictated movement through Belgium, which the King being a vassal of the Kaiser, should have granted free passage, but didn't for fear of the French if Germany didn't succeed. You want to blame someone? Blame these two idiots... Berchtold + Hötzendorf, whose ultimatum triggered the Austro Hungarian-Serbian crises!! Germany propped up an empire that was no real empire.....like it did at Vienna....with Baden, Bavaria and Poland under Jan Sobieski fighting against the Turks while the Austrians cowered in Vienna!! Germany's Belgian invasion was the excuse the British used....for their aggressive behavior.All European countries wanted that war....but not the cost, in the end!!

Sorry but you seem to be obtaining your history from a kids'comic. It was Austro-Hungary, with support of its ally Germany, that declared war first and on Serbia, an ally of Russia. Germany declared war on both Russia and France not the other way round and Germany invaded Belgium knowing that Britain was a guarantor of Belgium neutrality. The German Chancellor remarked that the Treaty of London that guaranteed Belgium neutrality "was but a scrap of paper".

+Kaiserbill99 What were British, Russians and Serbs! Who told that Serb Bastard to shoot anyone? Somebody should have shot the British King and if England reacted, Britan should have been called War Mongers. Assholes had more respect for a grubby Serb assassin and his Black Hand terror network than the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
