This one hit hard. I'm not Korean but I am Asian and had a very bad experience teaching English in Korea as well. It was basically mental health torture, due to a few bad apples. And like you, it ruined a bit of Korea for me and I had a similar reaction. And like you, my grandmother passed away earlier this year, in Hong Kong. But my last trip with her was to Seoul. And I took her to a lot of places that I enjoyed before the ruination, and it helped with healing. Sometimes you have to get back to where you were before you can go forward. I am sorry about your grandma but I'm glad she got to see part of your healing journey as well.

I can really relate about being half asian and trying to seek your identity. I am half swedish and half filipino and in school I was always referred as the chinese kid even though I'm not even chinese. I constantly lied about being able to speak tagalog even though I didn't know a single word, just so I would feel that I belonged somewhere. I never felt that I belonged in Sweden just because of how people treated me because of my apperance and in the Philippines I'm just a complete tourist. I'm also obsessed with geography in every single way but family always comes first and I'm happy for you.

In my eyes, a lot of the channel's history is tied up in you rediscovering your appreciation for Korea as a people and South Korea as a nation, as well as reconnecting with your family. To see this video made me realize that, as far as I can understand it, you have finally accepted being Korean again. It was wonderful to see this video and it made me appreciate your struggle even more than I had realized before this. Thank you for all you do for Geography lovers everywhere and may you keep going even after Zimbabwe. I'm half German and half Armenian, and grew up and still live in Greece. I grew up in a very rural place, and although I had and still have a good connection to my German side, I have had close to none contact with my inner Armenian. After beginning my studies in music, I started exploring Armenia's music. Today, after having our Christmas dinner, my mother remembered an Armenian Christmas carol people would sing in the streets when she was a little girl. It moved me to tears, in a way I have never felt before. I felt so close to the spirit of this people, yet I'm so disconnected from it it hurts. I have never been to Armenia either. I lost my grandmother 10 years ago, and she would sing the most beautiful songs both in Greek and Armenian. After so much time, I can't help but feel so sad that I hadn't discovered all this sooner, and didn't have a chance to sing with my grandmother. But I know she smiles and laughs and sings along whenever I sing, either alone, or with the many choirs I've since joined. Thank you for opening up Paul, and reminding me and so many others of little joys like these, and on how we ought to get over our traumas. Sincerely and unapologetically yours, MM

Wow what an experience you had! I lived in Seoul for half a year. As an obvious Dutch person I was exempt from the kind of abuse you experienced, but I heard many awful stories from people my age. The fact that bad people get to do what they want just because they are more senior is insane. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to go beyond these kinds of awful experiences. Life is too precious to be consumed by something a couple of bad people did to them and S.Korea is too beautiful of a country to be hated as a whole.

What a great video Barbs! I have been working in Japan now for about 25 years and when I first went I had a choice to go to Japan, Taiwan or Korea. I chose not to go to Korea for the same reason that you had your bad experiences. University friends who were working in Korea at the time told me similar stories about scummy business practices. Regarding your ancestry, don't forget how lucky you are. As a Caucasian in Japan and speaking the language it's great to make amazing friendships. On the other hand, there is a predisposition people have with meetings that starts with the first encounter. Overcoming this can be tiresome at times. With your ancestry you can skip between 2 cultural identities freely. You may never feel fully part of either, but maintain the agency to choose how you want to involve yourself in either cultures. I envy you for having that freedom. Your involvement with religion is also understandable. I have had many interactions with Christianity through life and still feel relatively religious. I don't go to church regularly but have nothing against going to a church or temple and may increase the frequency in the future. It is so good that you had a chance to have some closure with your past experiences. (although the editing cut from you peeing to the scene at your grandmothers place was a bit rough! haha) There are so many flaws with organized religion but one thing that is often taught in many religions is to forgive. This allows you to let go of the burden. You don't need to hold on to that, you are bigger and stronger now. Let it go. Finally, you getting the chance to communicate with your grandmother before she passed is such a treasure to share with us. Thanks for another wonderful video and happy holidays!

As a Korean, who is living pretty close to Gyeongbok palace and have cousins who are born and raised in the US, this video is so heartwarming. It almost feels like you are my lost cousin loll I'll do what your cousins have done for you, when my cousins come to Korea. Last time they visited was 2016, and they were kids, too young to appreciate all the cultural aspects of Korea. Also I'm so sorry that you had terrible experiences with Korean school. I don't blame you for pissing on the fence. I know what kind of bad experiences you could've had in Korean school, especially in 2006. Things are better now for sure, but still I think some of the things that Korean students have to go through are straight up child abuse. I wanted to kill myself in high school and so many other kids were depressed. I literally saw some of my friends break into tears while studying. I assume that you didn't have the usual Korean school experience like I did, but still I can think of some scenarios that could ruin a kid's life.

What a precious video. As a person who moved away from their origins, immigrated for a better life, I must realise my Romanian heritage and be proud of it. What brought us back to romania was, like in your case, to visit the grandparents for holidays. I lost all of my grandparents well before i turned 18, and i always wished i could have visited one last time. It was grandmas cooking, jokes, her pretty home, that kept me connected with the good of my country. In the same way, I am happy your grandma got to be with everybody she loved, it is such an unforgetable feeling. I must say I shed a tear at the end, stay strong! ❤

Thank you for being open to the possibilities life offers. I felt the end of this video to the core. "When she sees those things and is happy it makes me happy." That vulnerable and raw message had me thinkng about my own relationship with my mother. You've got a good heart Paul and continue to be. Feel those emotions because it's important. Distracting by doing, rushing through them, or disregarding them to be strong does no justice for ones being. Going back and getting closure sounds like it took weight off your chest. Plus, the feeling of the homeland is always present. When I go back to where my mom was born it feels like home to me. The lessons we learn in retrospect after our greatest challenges allow for growth.

This was so beautiful to watch, I also lost my grandma last month(the last of my grandparents) and she died with all of us present so I can relate to this video in some way ❤ Plus, I really admire the relationship you have with your mom, it's rare in todays culture.
