The Last HI-NRG Ravers in Mexico

Every other Friday is Hi-NRG night at the Patrick Miller club in Colonia Roma, Mexico City. The night celebrates a type of disco with an electronic sound and a high-speed beat that was popular worldwide in the 80's. Although the form's worldwide popularity has ebbed, in Mexico City it is still alive, and its fans continue dancing to it in an almost religious way.
In 1983 Robeto Devesa, a Mexican DJ better known as Patrick Miller, started organizing parties in downtown Mexico City's Journalists Club. He imported the latest hits before anyone else, and the parties became mythical. Patrick turned into a character and a legend, adored by fans who danced weekly to the Hi-NRG rhythms; and his name became synonymous with epic raves. This is why Patrick Miller's followers, who call each other Patricios, have managed to keep this style of music alive, despite its being consider old fashioned in the countries in which it originated.
In the early 90's, Devesa decided to search for a permanent home to foster his sounds, lights, and lasers. Thus he founded the Patrick Miller club, which opens its doors every Friday in Colonia Roma to let parishioners dance like the gods.
We went with Jorge, better known as Padawan, to the house where he meets with his buddies-other members of the Banda Loca-before heading to their favorite club. Then we travelled with them to the Patrick Miller club, to better understand what makes Hi-NRG nights way more than just a regular disco party.

Nice to see older guys enjoying their life like this. Most men don't like to dance because they feel ashamed, they can't loosen up without the alcohol. We should take example from the Patricios ;-)

He's found himself..who he is, and what he likes. He's made friends, socializes with them and stays active, and dances like there's no tomorrow as a relief from everyday stress. In my opinion, that's freaking awesome! He's winning at life cause that's way more than most people can say about their own lives, myself included.

There a big wave of disco music throughout mexico nowadays with alot of young, new producers, influenced by italo, new beat, hi-nrg and cosmic stuff. Almost like Mexico is becoming the new disco capital of the world. Love it!

Such a shame to see such ignorance and critiques here... Who of us when we were teens were fortunate enough to "find our tribe".. Find that scene where we fit like a glove, it allowed us to meet good solid friends, helped us find and stake our small place in the larger world. How many of us still have "our tribe".. most of us dont..most of us still remember those days when we were having the time of our lives.. these folks here unlike most of us found their tribe and have kept it together all these years. A testament to them and I'm overjoyed and deeply jealous that they have maintained what I could not yet still miss to this day. The love of music, 'clubbing', dancing and 'the scene' doesnt die just because you turn 25.. It's a damned shame that music seems to be an escape allowed for teens that often have little value for it's legacy. The folks I go to for music knowledge are all older people that were eyeball deep in it during the brith of it all, not some 19 year old that only listens to what their friends like to listen to.. I love documentaries like this..reminds me that there are folks out there that are quite different from me living their lives to the fullest.. Keep em coming Vice.. I know what your doing and i'm loving it..

VICE should have delved a little more on were this music came from, this is what Disco became after the anti disco rallies in the USA, it was pretty much European 80s disco, (some Italo-Disco songs are pretty much considered part of the HI-NRG repertoire) Canadian 80s disco acts, and still some underground stuff from the USA which was only popular with the gay culture of the 80s in there, actually the only places where you would be able to listen to this in the USA in the 80s were Gay clubs, as disco was totally barred away with the end of the 70s rallies, that's why 90% of Americans are ignorant about this, and call it shit like "90s Techno" (they don't even know what actual techno music is anyway either) or stuff like that.

i think you're the only one in these comments who understand hi-NRG and it's placement in the development of electronic music culture. so many here didn't know of it until they watched this, and they are still complaining after witnessing something new and foreign to their senses . this video was awesome! i knew mexico had a thriving hi-NRG culture still but had never experienced it (neither here nor there - was too young for Hi-NRG's heyday) let alone seen footage of it. Sigan bailando al final y tomando sin parar!

I am a huge Italo Disco fan, 29 years old, and I totally get these people. I would rather be in my 40s and still able to dance my ass off to my favourite music, surrounded by friends, then only getting exercise from waking up at 5 a.m. to jog or power walk or whatever boring thing is supposed to be acceptable at that age.

Why so much hate over this? Hi-NRG Disco is great stuff. I'm a big fan of EDM, and like fans of Rock often like classic rock, I like classic EDM too. I'm 20, and I have to admit I like early 80's Disco and Hi-NRG more than most EDM of today.

putumban96 Chicago House is what led me to Hi-NRG. Chicago House artists also were inspired by Disco artists. And the Hi-NRG I like really isn't this kind in the video, but more so the early 80's stuff from the US and Canada before it got really cheesy. The stuff in this video I'm guessing (If they could play the real stuff and not use copyright safe generic music lol) is probably the late 80's stuff which does suck.
@RoninAvenger
@RoninAvenger 10 жыл бұрын

I have a soft spot in my heart for 80's synthesizer-heavy tracks as it reminds me of my childhood. So I say HI-NRG is pretty bad ass. Stuff that sounds like this is a big reason I got into electronic music and the jungle/drum and bass scene back in the mid to late 90's, so much respect to the sounds that came before the ones I love that it was built off of.

It makes sense in a sort of mid-80s Blue Monday way. A Tuesday 80s night taken to a genre specific extreme? Kids, this will all make sense when you are in your late 30s or early 40s when the music you grew with and partied to gets put on as a once a week, or a once every 2 weeks club night, known affectionately as "Retro night."

If you haven't noticed, nearly all of their videos are about specific phenomena. Making more videos about entire countries in general would be pointless, because thousands of people go in and out of most countries every day. The only reason the North Korea video was so general was because just getting in was an amazing thing by itself. Go Google the countries you want to learn more about, and come to Vice when you want to learn about the human condition, i.e. what Vice's motto is.

What the fuck did I just watch? I get that people can be passionate about something but there's a difference between being passionate and being OBSESSED! They're all like 45 and still raving daily or something? I can tell by where they live that their priorities are all fucked up. You can have fun but make sure you're at least stable

I think this is one of the wierdest and funniest urban tribes ever, they are so unreal. Mexico is a very wierd place full of wierd people. From the 80´s punk kids in the Subway, to the regguetoneros at dancing clubs, or narcocorridos in the north part of the cpuntry to this, i really think Mexico is sensless, wierd, freaky and exotic... fucking love living here

It's immaterial whether anyone think this is cool or not. These people are FEELIN' it! The haters should all be so lucky to find something that moves them to this degree.

Agree. I was thinking the same thing, until that woman said like it's their anthem, it's their music, and they feel it. Y'know, everything made sense and made me realize that's how I feel about my music.
