Love the podcast!! ❤❤ I've always known I wouldn't enjoy this book so I'm happy to now know what happens overall 😂😊 In my opinion, complaining about the realism in fiction comes when you're already not enjoying the book and every little thing starts to annoy you more and more. And I do think it's valid to rate something low if you didn't enjoy your time with it, even if that was the intent of the story.

Whew, started watching this and my curiosity was piqued like 15 minutes in. Just finished listening to the book and excited to watch the rest now because woah it was good. Heavy but good

As for the "realism", people in real life do "unrealistic" things every day. Watch the news. Look into psychology. Look at the people around you. Folks don't make no damn sense. As long as the actions of fictional characters match what we've learned about them in the book, fine. Y'all made this book sound very interesting. This made me think of Cultish by Amanda Montell, which talks about how cult-ish language is used in "normal" society. Keep up the fun discussions!

I haven't read the book, but it sounds like a lot of the complaints in other reviews stem from a total lack of understanding. ANY time info comes out about a cult, people ask "but why did they fall for it, are they stupid?" It's like asking a battered spouse why they stayed in an abusive marriage. They stayed because they were targeted for their vulnerabilities and psychologically primed to believe that this was what they wanted, this was what they deserved. Think about how quickly a young traumatized person can fall into an abusive relationship. It's not unrealistic at all.
