About 20 years ago when gaming money was tight for me, I hoped to find the "best" tactical series and go with that. In the years that have passed I have picked up many tactical series. What I have found, just in my opinion, is that there is no really best series out there. They are all damn good. There are however, a lot of games in the tactical space. I find myself having difficulty in stopping from buying whatever serious comes out next. They just seem to keep coming out, new series after new series! Assault games out of Germany with their Assault Red Horizons 41, and now Assault Sicily 43, looks absolutely super. I finally reached the point where I had to ask myself how many tactical series are enough. Currently I have Combat Commander, Conflict of Heroes, Band of Brothers, Lock and Load Tactical, Old School Tactical, Nations at War, Fighting Formations and Last Hundred Yards.

I could have written something very similar myself. I agree - people may have a favorite tactical series, but there are a slew of great systems out there, and you just named a bunch of 'em.

Great review. If you were having a dilemma - ASLSK or LHY, which would you recommend?

I haven't tried ASLSK yet - though I do have it and plan on doing some video on it. So for now I'd have to go with LHY but that comes with the big disclaimer I just mentioned. I'll try to do something with ASLSK in the near future because I would like to take a deeper look at some of the various squad-level systems. Thanks!

congratulations and thanks for the clear unboxing. one question, the maps are 7 double sided so 14 maps, but on the back of the box it says that there are 8 double sided maps. Is it a printing error on the box?

Ah, good observation. I have seven maps in my box, so either I got shorted one, or that is a typo on the box (which does say eight maps as you noted). I just went and checked and I definitely only have seven double-sided mapboards.

Damn. Too bad I'd need to buy 2 other games beforehand. That's a commitment.

Yeah. I'm not sure what it is that you need (my guess is markers, although this one does have them. Could also be specific German units I suppose. I'll have a better idea when I do my playthrough. I almost forgot to mention it and so had to edit that in to make sure people knew it.

​@@HexedAndCountered You need the Germans. Almost no German units come in this expansion, with the exception of a few replacement units it looks like. This expansion basically gives you the Russians.

@@robertmoffitt1336 Thanks Rob. Yeah, this is something that's not unique to LHY. Plenty of other systems have core modules and use this same model, but it does suck when you don't necessarily want to play the core stuff (Western Front '44-45 in this case) and are only really interested in the expansion module. I prefer Eastern Front myself but I also enjoy the rest whether it's early war, North Africa, Normandy, etc.

Great review hexed thank you but i will not be buying this as i have no interest whatsoever in owning the obligitory titles shame as i would have snapped this one up as russian theatre is my favorite, poor descision on gmt making this none standalone i am sure sales will suffer

Yeah, it seems to be the trend among tactical games and really isn't all that uncommon unfortunately. GMT also does it with Panzer & Combat Commander for example. On the other hand, the next Panzer release (North Africa) is going to be a core game.
