Great Big Story

7 жыл бұрын

For more than 50 years, Baltazar Ushca Tenesaca has been ascending Ecuador's tallest mountain to harvest glacial ice. At one time, there were 40 or so ice merchants who made the daily trek up the active volcano. But now, only Ushca continues this 500-year-old tradition. And while the demand for ice isn't as high as it once was, Tenesaca's harvesting methods remain the same. Despite the challenges, this ice merchant is as dedicated to his work as ever.

Since he has 3 chunks of ice that's 15 dollars. Minimum wage there is 437 dollars a month, or 14.7 dollars a day. This is a very strenuous job, but in no way should he be payed more, if he is doing it on his own, and there is a cheaper product. This is like someone working minimum wage in america, and getting 60 dollars to do this, for 180 pounds of ice. At Walmart you can get that much ice for 27 dollars, and at costco for 16. He is making a personal choice to do this, and is selling a cheap commodity at a premium, making almost exactly minimum wage. The market determines the value of his work, not your heart

thousands of traditions all over the world are going. Sad to see. It's beautiful to me to see this man still continue his work even though of how hard and dangerous it is. He doesn't care about the pay. He cares about what this means to him. Tradition freedom and doing something he loves. My dad and grandpa went hunting in the mountains of Greece. They didn't have to do it but they loved it and it was their past time besides logging which was the one of the main industries of his village. The village is abandoned now besides for two people who went back. All those traditions due to modernizing times are gone along with many more that unfortunately I see going as well.

Yup, what do you think about all those languages going extinct today because everybody wants 'the best' for their children? Instead of learning your kids their mother tongue you learn them a language to make their lifes easier. In my opinion your children need some hardship in order to grow up, this begins when they are small, so I think they should learn their mother tongue as their first language and then learn a bigger language as their second!
@GrogTube

What about you? Do you go hunting in the mountains of Greece. The reason why all these cultural events and values are disappearing is because we are not as connected to our culture. Before getting all woozey over traditions being lost take a look at yourself.
