King Constantine of Greece had been a King in name only since being ousted in a military coup in 1967. From his base in London, he travelled the world, rubbing shoulders with the political elite such as Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro and the Queen of England. He tirelessly worked for “his people” and the good causes he has established.
In 2003, King Constantine finally returned to his country - a timely homecoming for a man who won a gold medal at the Rome Olympics - and was instrumental in winning the 2004 Olympic Games for Athens. This intimate and personal film is based on unprecedented access to the King and his family.
King Constantine talks as never before about the events that led to his exile and his fight for justice and recognition. It includes exclusive footage inside the family home in Hampstead, behind the scenes at the Royal events and “off-duty” moments. This is the King’s story. The story of a man who lost his crown but refused to give up

@@marialuisagraziadelbon3606 that is very true, but really, it wasn’t necessarily his fault that Greece abolished the monarchy, if I know correctly it was the Junta and their dictatorship that overthrew him, which was a pity. Today, 10 January 2023, King Constantine’s death has just been announced. A turning point in Greek history with the death of the last king. A good man, perhaps naive, perhaps unable to deal with the complexities of politics, I am saddened to learn of his passing today. Irrespective of the politics, it is a sad day.

I've watched this documentary many times, and with the passing of HM King Constantine II on January 10, 2023, it just felt right to come back here to watch it again. I feel that The King was a good monarch, and did act in the "heat of the moment" with the coup and counter-coup, but was overall a wonderful leader. If I was to guess at how relations between the Greek Royal Family and the Greek people have been over the past 2 decades, I would say that relations have gotten better and that they may want to return to a Constitutional Monarchy, but it's now more of a "wait and see" time. May the King Rest in Peace. God Save the Greek Royal Family!!!

For monarchy to work and be popular in a country, it has to be indigenous to it, at least in large part. Greece’s monarchy is of recent vintage and came from Germany. Greeks voted for a republic by 70%. Monarchy never established deep roots in Greek soil.

@@remi_gio how could he have stopped the military junta? He tried to overthrow it, but sadly failed. It was the military that betrayed the people and not the King. The republic has certainly been betraying the people since 1974. They abolished the upper house of parliament and voted themselves immunity from prosecution and other crimes against the Greek people. The republic has also bankrupted Greece. What a greedy corrupt disaster it continues to be.

A grave error was committed by the citizens of Greece in choosing to abolish the monarchy, for King Constantine is the epitome of a statesman who loves Greece to the core, won an Olympic medal for his country and still holds no resentment over the referendum's result. That referendum was Greece's loss for he would've been an admirable champion for Greek culture and for the wellbeing and advancement of Greek society. He is the reason Greece is a democracy today for God's sake. His selflessness remains an act of admirable statesmanship and the people of Greece will forever owe this man their eternal gratitude.

He sounds like a good person. Sad not to be able to go back to your country. Politicians of the day would never have brought him back for fear of losing their status. Greeks must be coming from kurds. We call the kurds a nation without brains and common sense. This x king should have left his well known prime minister make changes in the army. It was needed, there was a revolution and he mishandled it badly. Still, sorry for the guy. He should have read some books about real life and politics.

It is unacceptable that the government confiscated the king's private property. Here in the UK if we abolished the monarchy and they ordered HM Queen Elizabeth out of Windsor Castle, I would say "fine, it's not her private property". However, if they tried to confiscate Sandringham I would protest. If her private property is not safe from theft, then neither is my modest home. King Constantine sounds like a very nice person. Admittedly, he is on his best behaviour for the cameras, but underlying that seems to be quite a down-to-earth guy.

@@ahmadganteng7435 Monarchs and politicians are nothing more than figureheads. They are parasitic. There is no democracy today. Its an illusion. It has nothing to do with the Ancient Greek's original version of Democracy. Like politicians, monarchs do not earn their position but either pay for it or inherit it. As a patriot my country is King not a person. People believing in any title above that of their country only confirms the contempt politicians have for the masses and that is they are sheep. naive and gullible. European countries with monarchs foolishly believe the European Union will allow them to keep their monarchs. It wont. Can you respect monarchists who have willingly and freely given away their country's national sovereignty and currencies to the EU and the euro? and yet want their monarchies. How hypocritical is that? Its all about them and not their country. I have no respect for people who do not place their country above all else.

@@ahmadganteng7435 Ultimately the citizens are responsible for the mess any country is in. They voted for them. They deserve to pay the consequences also. Today's version of democracy does not provide its citizens with a say. They are often ignored. The EU is a classic example of referendums being bypassed and/or ignored. The Ancient Greeks or Athenians made it mandatory for all citizens to vote on all issues. Every citizen was required to serve in all positions of power. Everyone was elected not appointed. None of this is done in today's so called democracies. No referendums are held. The constitutions are written and voted by the rich and powerful and enforced by them as law not the people. You vote for one person decided by their party, not you and told to vote for them. These people then start appointing not electing their friends into positions of power quietly and secretly. They do this with laws also with no and very little say from the public. Its a dictatorship by many of the elite, not one person.

No. The Greek monarchy wasn’t even founded until 1832. At that point, it wasn’t even his family who were first invited to take the throne. A Bavarian prince became king of Greece almost half a century before Constantine’s ancestors did.

The Greek monarchy was deposed and restored numerous times. Constantine II’s grandfather, Constantine I, was deposed twice. First in 1917, then restored after his son King Alexander died in 1920, and then deposed again in 1922 in favour of his eldest son, George II. George II was himself deposed in 1924 in favour of a republic, and then restored in 1935. George II was then again deposed by the Nazis when they invaded in 1941, then restored again in 1944.

I don't believe in Monarchy, however this exiled King seems like a very nice man indeed . His big mistake was remaining silent when the military junta in Greece overthrew the government and subsequently abolished the Monarchy . I think it showed weakness on his part ,even though his main aim was to avoid bloodshed . I do believe he had the countries best interest at heart though. Even today he speaks proudly of the country he was born and raised in and it is clearly apparent he loves the Greek people . Constantine is not Greek by blood . As a line of Kings that originate from Denmark I find it fascinating that he identifies completely as a Greek . You have to respect the man for that . I actually think he would have been a wonderful King and good for Greece . Greece today is in an unholy mess. Sad how things turned out both for Constantine and for the country that he loves so much . The Greeks don't have it in their D.N.A. though to be ruled by Monarchs , even when they like the man in question .

@BEHOLD!! What you have stated is very true. However, the ancient Greeks did not like the concept of monarchy. Monarchical rule ...rule by a king.... was overthrown in Greece. The hereditary rights of Kings was constantly being challenged by the aristocracy. The Monarchy was eventually eliminated in most ancient Greek city states by 800 BC, and replaced with an oligarchy rule by a privileged class of landowning aristocrats and wealthy merchants. Democracy eventually came to Greece by 507 BC and subsequently as time progressed to the rest of the western world . That ancient magnificent country with its great thinkers and philosophers Hellenized the world. Ancient Greece became the cradle of all of western civilization. Thank you so much for your response.

Although I am not Greek my family and I love the country, as I also have family ties to Greece and it’s many islands, I recently went there for ninth time, and my parents twenty fifth or something like that. Though my mother can remember what the Greek airport use to be like, with a man sat on the run way with a table, rummaging through peoples luggage!

There is an old saying "Greeks, we put our hands and took off our own eyes". Nobody is go to confess this one, but is the whole true of how King Constantine self exile with his family, his own country. We reach today 2022, and still the Greek state and the any Greek administration still scare to death the name of King Constantine. The Greek state that time back in 1960's, took everything from his family, throughout the years. The Greek state did not really wanna to accept the fact, that the only thing left for King Constantine is his title as King of Greece. Greeks, that time, for 7 long years stayed with no any Royal Family in Greece. So, when the time came, to decide. What the Greek people really wanna after the end of dictatorship, they had to choose (Royal Democracy, or Democracy??) Just to thinking, how silly Greeks were that time, they pick up (Democracy), and King Constantine his wife Queen Anna Maria of Greece forced to forget what their families really fought for in Greece the last few centuries. Today, Greek state - administration and the majority of Greek people, they don't really know what they want. They afraid the man his wife and his family, they afraid his name and his title, they afraid old times and memories from a dark past. The Greek state, wants to end this ghost story of Royal family in Greece. King Constantine and his wife Queen Anna Maria, they fight for their dignity and what the Greek state took them that time. I glad to say this one, Greeks still love their king Constantine and his wife Queen Anna Maria along with his family. I really want to live and see, Greeks and the Greek state to restore the Royal Family and the Greek Kingdom in Greece some day, so his kids and grand children to know better their grand father - grand mother home country!!

The Monarchy of Greece was created by the London Conference of 1832 at which the First Hellenic Republic was abolished. The Greek Crown was originally offered to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha but he declined, later being elected King of the Belgians. In 1832 Prince Otto of Bavaria of the House of Wittelsbach was styled His Majesty Otto I, King of Greece, over which he reigned for 30 years until he was deposed in 1862. After Otto's deposition as King, the Crown was offered to, amongst others, the novelist and former British Colonial Secretary Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Such a not Greek king.

Anyone else notice the Queen of Spain literally wipe her face off after the bride kissed her cheeks?! 😂 Looks like she even grimaced. 😬 I decided to watch this bc Constantine’s family gets really bad press. Greece is especially harsh. Can’t blame them though. Greece itself was the birthplace of democracy and monarchy in general is the antithesis of that. Historically speaking, like Rome, they hated kings. That changed for a period when Greece got their independence from the Ottomans in the nineteenth century. Greek politicians thought they needed a monarch to be accepted on the international stage. The throne was never stable or secure. There were several uprisings and coups the deposed previous Greek kings.

@@onewotldgovernmentonlywhen9044 yes but she still carrys the title king just like king felips father king juan carlos who choice to keep the title king when he abdicated in favour of his son Two kings for Spain He may be leaving his office, but he won't be leaving his title behind. It's been confirmed that following his abdication on June 18th 2014, Juan Carlos I will remain King of Spain. While his son assumes the role and duties of a reigning monarch which will belong to him alone, Felipe VI will share the title of king with the man he will succeed. From June 19th 2014, Spain will have two kings. King Juan Carlos I and the man who will be king this time next week, Felipe And two kings means to queens as Sofia will keep the title she has held for 39 years after her daughter-in-law becomes Queen Letizia. The changes needed for the country to have two sets of monarchs are expected to be passed on June 13th 2014 and at the same time it will be confirmed that the eight year old Infanta Leonor will become Princess of Asturias on the day her father becomes king. Seeing double - two kings and two queens for Spain in 2014 Spain won't be alone in having this double dose of kings and queens. In Belgium, Albert II and Paola retained the title of king and queen following last year's abdication while the country also has a dowager queen consort - Fabiola, widow of King Baudouin. King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola on their wedding day It means that in less than a year, Europe has gone from having five kings and six consorts to seven kings and eight consorts - and that's before we get to the two queen regnants with their long reigning prince consorts. Europe's monarchies wobbled for much of the early part of the 20th century but in the first decades of the 21st, it seems that royals are doing better as ever as for the first time in generations the continent is seeing a growth in its number of kings and queens.
