@@SM-iy9nm True to a point but to many people literally get the historical knowledge they have (whether rightly or wrongly) FROM shows like this. History isn't exactly the most popular subject for most people. If film companies would mix good historical facts IN with the entertainment (and that's ENTIRELY possible) then maybe the historically ignorant would become a little LESS so. It could also teach many people that history isn't quite as "boring" as they first assumed. There is no harm with people that have discovered enjoying genuine history wishing that would happen. To make things worse often when someone get to researching the actual events movies/series are based on often the historical facts and circumstances wind up being a far more interesting than the "made up" story anyway, so WTF? lol.

I have just started the series but read the first 5 books a few years back. Cornwell is clearly anti-Christian and it really come out in this. Cornwell always includes an "Historical Note" at the back of the novels where he explains which bits are made up and which events and characters have been moved around for dramatic effect. The makers of the series have done significant additional "moving/inventing" without acknowledgement. But as someone pointed out, it is fiction, not history.

The books are far different to the series. The series take many liberties from the books to form the script. Bernard cornwell the author is a student of history. Cornwell is ok at best. He routinely shoe horns in his anti Christian worldview into his stories, which gets tiresome. For example, in book 1 he writes about the monks at Lindesfarme monastery raping and killing the peaceful Danish settlers of a nearby community. I spent hours looking and could find no reference to this event. It was completely contrived by Cornwell and likely built out of his rejection of the 20th century Catholic church and it's well known issues and conflating it with the monastic tradition of the pre schism 9th century Church. Read/listen to Harry Sidebottom, who has an actual depth of knowledge on the historical timeframe he writes about and can really bring it to life. It came to no surprise to me to find out after I listened to book 1, that he's a university professor on the topic. It also has less of the hero wins victory after victory after victory motif that permeates the historical fiction genre. His "warrior of Rome" series was on KZbin last I checked. (Which was over a year ago) and is honestly better than anything Cornwell has written.

And some of them are Alfred's own propaganda, yet people are blinded by fanboyism of this rando king who spent his life wringing his hands at Scandinavians who'd migrated fairly normally - the Saxons had been disunited for centuries and through their own fault and scheming. By all accounts Ceolwulf and Aethelred were normal rulers, but Alfred dragged both their names through the mud despite them actually being on the rank of co-king, at least for Ceolwulf. From a modern, moralist, biased point of view that one must take to say "Alfred was a good and great man", one can quickly realise than killing people for personal gain and the pretense of trying to unite people for political power are not "good" and it's counterintuitive scheming rather than "tactical genius" or "great leadership". Take a man, have him kill everyone, declare some unfeasible project and have him irrationally hate people of other cultures and you've got the workings of a man who will go down in people's hearts as a good man because they read "the Great", some historical vulgarisation works and decide they love him.

I have noticed the 'realism' has gone out of the window since season 1. It was alot more realistic and believable, and there weren't any fancy sword duels or lone warriors cutting down swathes of men without breaking a sweat like some übermensch, it was very realistic. However as the season has progressed alot of the action sequences have dropped in quality and just look silly. I still love the show but it needs to go back to how it was in the first season
@keighlancoe59334 жыл бұрын
@@MrAkaacer in the first weeks of WWI, about 100 British soldiers killed about 5000 German soldiers in a single battle, the reason being the Germans were marching into battle in formation, like it was still the Napoleonic war; the British had 3 machine guns and literally mowed them all down as they just marched into their gunfire in ranks. Technology at that time had far, far developed quicker than the tactics could keep up with. For the first year of that war they were basically fighting like the Americans did in their Civil War, but instead of muskets they had artillery cannons, machine guns and bolt action rifles that could fire relatively quickly and hit their target at great distances.

Also it is common knowledge that those Welsh people do know nothing about their home turf, so ambushing them is easy as breathing. And marching from Wals to Winchester in Wessex without gonig by Mercia is no problem if you use the Bifrost Bridge. You only have to bribe Heimdall. Conquering Winchester is the easiest part. In that vein, it isn't unlike Shakespeare's plays about English kings: to read (or viewed) as entertainment, not a faithful depiction of history. The giveaway is, of course, from the character of Uhtred and his merry band, which were not historical figures at all. Idk why people say he was an idiot on s4? He is when Winchester has been taken because he's emotional over it, his sons are inside the city and he has failed to protect his own city, which are understandable reasons to be off-balance, kinda angry, kinda unpredictable. But before that, he was pretty smart? In all his decisions, regarding discarting his mother for more modern points of views, protecting Winchester with barricades, making Uhtred to be the Lord of Mercia or even marrying his niece in order to have a good alliance with the next lord of Mercia (before choosing Uhtred). The dude got Uhtred to get baptised, which is something Alfred fought for years and never got. He's emotional because he's still pretty young and that's where his mother's stability plays a part in terms of the show's narrative. But other than that, I really didn't think he was an idiot, quite the opposite actually. He will become more independant as he grows up through the show, and that'll be very interesting to watch. I do believe Edward has the potential to be an even more interesting character than Alfred (who was already top-level).

In season 4 it is clear that they want a piece of the "Vikings" pie as this show comes to its end. They deviate a lot from history , seasons 1 & 2 were close. Also they need to pay more attention to weaponry . Saxons did not carry rectangular shields . Danes wore helmets , they make them look like a heavy metal band . Also their combat tactics were very cautious , the show depicts them like crazy berserkers. Also Hungary where the show is shot is far more sunny than England.

15:35 I think I read somewhere that the Welsh were the last bastion of the Romano-Britons after the withdrawal in 410, and thus they inherited a lot of Roman culture by the time of the 10th century. Tell me if I've got that completely wrong.
@historywithhilbert4 жыл бұрын
I mean yes but the show is set post 910 which is a long time after the last vestiges of the "traditional" Roman influence on Britain left. There are influences from Rome but these come in the form of the church at this point, think of the manuscript tradition we see sometimes, but even that evolved and developed an awful lot since the days of Classical Rome. I take your point that they were aspiring and looking back at Rome but the fact they're all wearing quasi-Classical Roman gear like it's some kind of dystopian "choosing day" where they all wear the same colour etc. is a bit ridiculous in my view :P

@toade15832 жыл бұрын
Not really, the lands of the Welsh were originally the parts of Roman Britain that weren't Romanized. It was the cities like Londinium(London). That's why the Welsh and Cornwall kept their Celtic culture and religion up until the 1100s. The reason why the Anglo Saxons came to Britain in the first place was due to the Romano-Britons calling them to defend against the Welsh and the un-Romanized Celts of Britain.

The siege was stupid. Why didn't he...starve the Danes out? You know, what sieges are for? The show tried to show what was a winning position for Edward as some kind of desperate circumstance.
@KingdomCooperFan4 жыл бұрын
The siege was ineffective largely due to Edward's own fortifications and preparations which he had built up in the years before in the event that he himself would be placed under siege. The Danes essentially used Wessex's fear of an invasion against them. As a consequence, Sigtryggur's army was both well-defended and had stores upon stores of food. He wouldn't be able to stay in there forever, but his plan was always to humiliate Edward and then negotiate with him in order to receive some land, not to conquer Wessex. He also had plenty of hostages to threaten and kill if Edward proved to be stubborn.
@internetenjoyer10444 жыл бұрын
@@KingdomCooperFan But if he killed those hostages, he had nothing but time. He could hold out long, sure, but holding out long does nothing when there's nothing he can do. His hostages could've bought the siege to an end on good terms for him, but he gave away the hostages and his walls were breached. He had lost, completely. And THEN Edward negotiates? Makes no sense.
@Cklert4 жыл бұрын
@@internetenjoyer1044 I think the idea was that time was against Edward in the long run. The Danes essentially had Edward's entire family, his heirs, and Alfred's legacy as hostage and that it could be ended at any moment. So if they did ended up starving them they'd probably just kill his heirs anyway. It was suppose to show that Edward had more to lose than the Danes. Which to a degree, is true. Everytime the Danes lose, they just retreat and regroup again with overwhelming numbers like they always do. Though I do agree the negotiations was something that could only happen in fiction.
@internetenjoyer10444 жыл бұрын
@@Cklert They had hostages, but they couldn't touch those hostages if they wanted to survive. The only viable end goal for the Danes was to bring Edward to the table; showing them destroying Alfred's possesions slowly would be very good to that end, and the family are good assurance that Edward will be willing to give them a away out rather than kill them at all costs, but Edward had time. He could've demobilised half his forces to save money, and just sat and wait for the Danes to inevitably negotiate. Now, Sieges were well understood in the middle ages. maybe this is too early for the military docitrine to be establish, but both parites, upon reflection, should have looked at each other and gone "yeah okay this is obviously a negotiation sitution. We Danes can't hold this place, but we can take a lot of this stuff, including your family, with us if you insidt on killing us. So now we talk about how much gold you give us to leave.".

I think the idea with this portrayal of Edward is to show how he was burdened with this huge responsibility from an early age, he was naturally a bit reluctant and afraid at first, easily influenced by heavyweight eldermen around him... and than he evolved into the beast he really was on the screen in front of us. Probably much thanks to Uthred and his help, similarly to how his father developed through his relation with Uthred. And also this little bastard boy who later became the first king of the English will probably be somehow Uthreds product. Mostly the increasing inaccuracies that really spiralled after Season 3 were explained by a) the BBC handed control over to Netflix, b) Netflix wanted the show more like their other programs. Also the first directors & head writer really cared about faithfulness, but later ones less so & just wanted to make a point. However all TV shows do have budgetary concerns, Dreymon has said they knew the costumes & weapons were often inaccurate but that was done so people could identify which side was which when it became known just how unfamiliar even British people were about Alfred's legacy other than the burned cake legend. Also production took it upon themselves, Adrian Bouchet said that Steapa's two handed sword was completely inaccurate for the 9th century since it was designed for plate armor instead of chain mail but the department said it would look more interesting in combat choreography for a large character. Over time actor contributions & writers just played with the story to the point that newer actors didn't even bother reading the Cornwell novels anymore. So its not that historical inaccuracies were unknown, just a lot of factors over time made the show increasingly less plausible. Only season 1 is roughly accurate in a generic way, even though Chippenham occured before Cynwait hill precipitating the Alderney abscondance & the Winchester invasion is totally wrong for plot purposes. By 4 it was a pretty blatant Game of Thrones wannabe & Season 5 is just a lot of writers wanting to get their narratives out, storyline/history be damned.
