The thing to remember about diesel, is that most road haulage uses it, and therefore the price will (hopefully) need to stay reasonable. Last year 74 million road miles in the UK were on diesel (mostly haulage), and 46 million were on petrol. Electricity was under 5 million.

Hi, here is some info that might make your life with your Porsche easier and less stressful: I spoke with a friend in Germany yesterday who bought his Porsche Taycan a few months back. He told me that he has "auto charge" on the Ionity network. It means that he doesn't have to activate the charging session with his Porsche card. He plugs in and the car communicates with the network (like Teslas on the Supercharger network). Maybe you should check if this is possible in the UK too. Also, he mentioned that he once had a problem on the "EON" network. He could not activate the charging session and he tried 4 different cards. He then called a "Porsche charging support hotline". They activated the charger remotely and he could charge his car. Maybe this service is available in the UK too ? Maybe they could have even activated your charging session at the bp pulse charger in Spain.

Hi, great video. I hope you are having a great time in Spain. It is interesting to see how your comments about EVs have changed. I just checked when you got your Porsche Taycan and the video that you made about “Collecting My New ALL ELECTRIC Porsche Taycan” was posted on 10 Oct 2021. Basically, as of today (25 May 2024) you are owning your car roughly for 2.5 years. I am just wondering how it is possible that it took you 2.5 years to figure out how to use a route planning software. No judgement, I am just wondering. But then again, in the John O’ Groats video you mentioned that you just figured out on that trip (= going to John O’ Groats) how the regenerative braking works. That was after 2 years of ownership. Didn’t Porsche explain these systems? Again, I am just wondering. I agree with you that it would be a great idea to do the “John O’ Groats to Land’s end challenge” again with you using all the tools that your car offers. Just one additional comment on your road tripping “style”. You are still charging your car to 100%. This is not effective when you want to reach your destination as quickly as possible. I just want to give you an example (data is based on your charging session at the Porsche dealer in Perth on 27 Oct 2023) how this affects your travel time. John O' Groats to Land's end (Charging at Porsche in Perth on 27 Oct 2023) SoC start SoC end % - charged kWh charged sec/kWh Avg. charg. speed (kW) Start End Time in min 11% 80% 69% 55.2 21.7 165.6 17:45 18:05 20.00 80% 100% 20% 16.0 90.0 40.0 18:05 18:29 24.00 Battery (kWh) 80.0 As you can see, the average charging speed between 11% and 80% is more than 4 times higher than between 80% and 100% (165.6 kW versus 40 kW). The last 16 kWh which took you 24 min to charge would have taken at a lower SoC (= State of Charge) just about 6 min. Therefore, you would normally not charge your car to 100% when you are on a road trip. And if you are interested, here are the details of the Porsche’s charging curve (this might vary depending on the circumstances). SoC Charging speed 10% - 30% 250 kW 31% - 36% 200 kW 37% - 70% 150 kW 71% - 88% 150 kW - 30 kW I actually wrote the stuff above before I watched the full video. First thing I want to say: Man, you have to calm down! What you are doing to yourself is not healthy. Don’t get stressed out when a charger is not working. I did a little analysis of your charging that went wrong. I managed to find the exact places where your charging went wrong and where you finally charged up: This is the charger that you could not activate with your card: Carrer Migjorn, 12539 Les Alqueries, Castello Google Streetview (The street view picture was taken before the charger was built.): www.google.com/maps/@39.8981352,-0.1257711,3a,75y,298.52h,89.92t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sdEKJ452w_zKtZI9NH69hLw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu This is where you finally charged: Carrer de Vicent Andres Estelles, El Puig de Santa Maria, Comunitat Valencia Google Streetview: www.google.com/maps/@39.587467,-0.2987696,3a,75y,190.32h,93.79t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sQ2buU2fDdv-hYaKEnhq0KQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu I am using “A better Route planner” as a route planning software. It is the paid version and a one-year subscription cost me about GBP 50. All chargers are mapped out and if you want to know the details about the charger you can click on the symbol in the map. From the charger that you could not activate continuing your trip south to Benidorm there were plenty of charging options within your remaining range. There was absolutely no need to be stressed out because there was no risk that you would get stranded. Yes, you had lost some time but other than that no need to worry. For me the best option at this point in your trip would have been to continue to the Tesla Supercharger in Valencia, which is just a very short distance off the highway. It is only 57 km from the charger that did not work for you (therefore within your range). Also, you would have avoided going through the city (Valencia). I think that the Porsche Route planning software is probably not the best and I don’t think Waze is a good option either (for the charging planning). BTW: A better Route planner works with Apple Car play and Android Auto. You might want to consider investing (roughly) GBP 50 to get this software because it seems to me that this software has most of the charging points included. (I am not paid by them to say that.) It is probably worth it if it can reduce your stress levels. Enjoy your holidays and safe travels!

Nice post. It was unfortunate that the last charger didn't work, damn you BP Pulse not taking credit cards. But like you I would have just quickly found the next charger manually and gone to that. Lee seems to take a long time at service stops, when I've driven to France I just drive for 2-2.5 hours then stop for wee/food for 20-30 mins and continue, no drama. No need to charge to 90+ % and stop for 50 minutes. At the start of the video the difference in expected time of arrival is 1hr47, this doesn't count any stops Geoff would have to make for toilet, food, petrol etc. So you can easily see how the true difference in time if you did follow the plan and tried to use your stopping time efficiently would be much less.

As the car's software can select the best routes and places to charge. How long before long journeys need to be approved by the government and then when you get to a charger where the car tells you to charge to 70% and it would not let you charge higher. It then tells you to drive to the next charger and sets the speed!

If you do the US drive, my suggestion for Geoff is to drive a Toyota hybrid. Camry or Prius. The reason is because the media is saying hybrids are better than EVs. So a hybrid vs EV challenge in the US would be very instructive. Toyota makes the best hybrids in my opinion. Also, diesel cars are not very popular in the US so you might have to consider a very old diesel.

Clearly a win for an old 30 years old petrol car which Geoff doesn’t know its history. This is showing us that EVs are just not there. Maybe a current EV would fare better but the governments cannot force us to replace these computers on wheels every 2-3 years to follow the latest improvements and even then, the biggest batteries are not yet to the level of an old petrol car, even in the best weather conditions. Debit and credit cards interfacing with an EV charger in a different country are probably a leap of faith.

Just curious why didn’t you just use your phone app to verify the charger? Or I think you needed to hold your RFID card to the reader for a little longer…I drove from Bilbao Spain to Roscoff France in a Tesla, 3 stops, we needed to stop for food etc anyhow at those stops no issues. But I do understand EV’s have their limitations, if you want to drive non stop and not stop for whatever reason you can’t, there are occasions I want to do this and it can be inconvenient, hence when I’m due to get a new car diesel may be back on the table, Mercedes do a E class diesel hybrid that I’m debating and they depreciate very slowly.

Another thing I love about driving in Europe is that drivers only get the information they need. You're not peppered with nanny-style advice on overhead gantries - Check your tyres, Don't drive tired, Plan your breaks, don't drink and drive, blah, blah bloody blah. Drivers are treated as adults. Even the non-auto routes in France are of spectacular quality, likewise Spain. The British road network ain't fit for purpose, and we ought to get compensation, not more charges, for using them.

Remember some lad pulling up next to us with his drum and bass, hiphop thumping away so my husband turned on our cd of a choir singing Christmas carols full blast! Usually have radio on though. That was a drive and a half though but you seemed to be happier at the end and presumably then met Kevin.

The MacMaster was getting a little giddy with his EV and almost bragging about the cost and such, so the EV gods had to bring him back to Earth.

The Volvo V70R is a very cool car, especially in saffron, which was only shared with the C70, with the depreciation of the Porsche, and the V70R actually climbing in value, I reckon in about 5 years the Volvo will be worth more than the Porsche

You can easily fly to Benidorm, but look at all the beautiful scenery you miss flying there. I would absolutely love to drive down there across Europe. And just look at the roads, I don’t think I seen a single pothole throughout your trip (in Europe). Makes you sick when you look at the state of our roads. Another fabulous video boys 😊 well done

Maybe it's only on the toll roads that they're so nice, potholefree. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just too good isn't it. Though certain parts of GB roads are good. .. one of the worst are in Hertfordshire!

I find it interesting that continental service stations are the same as UK....all signs to areas you want are everywhere. But when you want to leave, nothing, the road markings are worn away and signs are missing, hidden. There must be an old geezer driving around for decades still trying to leave.

Ever Since driving the new Taycan from Porsche Nottingham McMaster has heaped praise on his Taycan. Charging infrastructure. Porsche Satnav. Cooled seats. Has he got the equivalent of a "Pre-nup" from Porsche. Be positive and no negatives about EVs and Taycan and we will give you a super deal on a new Taycan or make him a "Taycan Ambassador"

That segment in Spain, at about 1 hour into the video, where you"re telling the viewers what the charging surveillance machine is showing.. would make a great shareable KZbin short.. ;)

When I was in grade school we got our milk in glass half pint bottles. In high school we had a milk dispenser that had white milk for 1 cent and chocolate for 2 cents. I do live in "America's Dairyland". ( Wisconsin)
