This is a very cool elevator. Reminds me of the elevator at the FritzWilly's Building in Northampton, MA which is birdcage and manually operated by a hired elevator operator.

we was repairing manualy operated lifts in the early 60s in london, i think they are great pieces of work, they was usually driven by ex servicemen and were realy put through it.

The last attendant driven lift I seen was in the early 70's ,though some remained on London Underground till later on but then they were a different application altogether.

I remember that Johnson & Wales had at least 2 manual elevators that I know of. One was in the old McNulty Hall (Crown Hotel) on Weybossett St and the other was in Bell Hall which I believe is now the Hotel Providence on Westminister St. I was a student there and lived in McNulty Hall on the 6th (top) floor in 1983-84 and the elevator was manned 24 hrs.

This video was posted four years ago what became of the bird cage elevator? Ought to install the new elevator(s) elsewhere in the building, preserve this historic "bird cage elevator"

TheTheo58 Just went there today they are rebuilding the building and the elevator has been removed to be upgraded so it might sill retain some of the features but most likrly be automatic.
@TheTheo587 жыл бұрын
thanks for the update, what a shame the manual controls are being replaced for automatic operation. You said, the elevator was removed, uh meaning the elevator "bird cage" car or did the machine and cables, guide rails removed as well?
@Ham5497 жыл бұрын
I didn't go in I did see a modern elevator through the door but was told that was what used to be a freight elevator. Around the cornor I saw a winding drum and worm gear with brak assembly but don't know which unit it came from. The guy said the old shaft is being used as a trash chute and the old car was removed, they seemed to think it was getting rebuilt but I don't know.

The winding drum you saw in the hallway, must be from the bird cage elevator that was filmed in 2012. I studied the roping and sheaves top of the shaft from the video, which indicated it was a basement winding drum machine. Guess time will tell if they rebuild the "bird cage" thanks again

I know of another Otis bird cage manually operated elevator, in Berkeley, CA in an historical office building near the UC Berkeley Campus. Installed in 1906 winding drum machine, I've ridden it a few times very quite and smooth up/down. About 19 years ago,after going up and down for 89 years, the motor gave up the ghost, the flat DC motor was taken out, completely rebuilt, reinstalled. Elevator works just like a sewing machine :) This one appears to be a basement winding drum with the support bean is at an angle top of the shaft with the sheaves. An overhead geared traction machine would need at least 2 machine beams to mount it.

Does a Elevator exist where i have switches and 5 switches for example an i can ride to a level. for example 01011=11 and pull the lever. or buttons which are locked but work smilar ?
@TheTheo585 жыл бұрын
Many years ago there was an elevator I don't recall the company off hand, their floor button panel, had buttons that locked when pressed, and popped out when the elevator reached the selected floor. There might have been something like this for manually operated elevators, more likely a push button rather than a maintained contact switch.

I understand the need for ADA-compliance, but it's such a shame that this will be ripped out. And an automated elevator will be a lot less charming and conversational than Danny.
