Tribute to one of the greatest historical movies in the history of mankind! Some of the best pieces of cinema have been defined by music. Exactly this beautiful movie is accompanied by awesome masterpieces of music.
Exciting historical and adventure drama.
This movie represents genuine feelings between friends, between men and woman. Reflects real history.
The spirit of heroism and love is shown.
"The last of the mohicans" immerses us into the ancient times of the middle of XVIII century. In the times of one wild, inhuman, deadly but so adventure, romantic and attractive north-american life. We are going to face the historical period of colonization of North America by both advanced countries of that ages England and France, and becoming participants of their fight for new, rich unlimited lands which are native to different Indians tribes.
It was a time of beautiful people. Also heroes. Such universal all-mankind categories as dignity, sacrifice, fidelity, nobility were significant part of people's lives. Some noble persons possesses qualities of pure feelings, good and brave acts, true friendship and...limitless and bottomless love!
All of us, true fans of this story and movie, is deeply grateful to the story creator and classic writer James Fenimore Cooper and director and producer of this beautiful, emotional film Michael Mann!
Let me personally express my admiration and let me pay tribute to Cora and Nathaniel, Alice and Uncas. And last but not least - to the last of the mohicans itself - Chingachgook! They're telling us: eternal feelings and eternal life are possible. It exists.Their destiny clearly represent to us one certain thing - eternal love. Once met, Cora and Nathaniel, Alice and Uncas comprehended it.

My children crying miserably after watching this movie complained asking why I made them watch this movie. I did because their ancestor wrote these books about Hawkeye, Leatherstocking, deerslayer, pathfinder and all his different names who my ancestor knew him the real one. Then my children proceeded to watch this version of Hawkeye 9 more times. He is an American classic him and his Mohican friends. Uncus in this version breaks every heart.

@lindahoffman, I like DDL as Hawkeye and his dedication is remarkable - but IMO the Native Americans actors make the movie so special! Eric Schweig doesn't have a lot of dialogue, but his face is wonderfully expressive. And Wes Studi's Magua is the most memorable character. He is a villain with a cause!

@@lindahoffman2692 thanks for answering 😀 And yes, I should also have mentioned the great Russell Means who was deliberately chosen by Michael Mann because of his political activities! Eric Schweig, Russell Means and Wes Studi make this great movie unforgettable. And it's heart breaking that their characters end up killing each other in that final climactic scene, because they are on different sides of a far reaching conflict which had been carried into their homelands by foreigners who used the Native American tribes just as useful tools.

This film is an absolute Masterpiece, & IMO, Michael Mann's finest film. every moment--------every scene-------the story---------the romance----------the score----------is unforgettable. AND, IMO, Madeleine Stowe was, in this film, the most beautiful actress in all of film history. She was strong, resilient, dedicated, & so beautiful, in my opinion, THE epitome of woman in a classic story. DDL really became Hawkeye. And, how the Native Americans were depicted, was at last, genuine without being condescending. --------------MJL< 76 y/o

They are not victims but ultimately pawns in a bigger power struggle and this movie is one of the very few that correctly portrays that. I was absollutly floored when my company offered me to take over a 15 month assignment in South Carolina.Back then I visited most of the filming locations in due time and fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ever since then the music has been been on my playlist. I consider the music as modern classical music, just like Ennio Morricone's music will they play this music in a 100 years. It is part of my live(and on every playlist) and will be with me till I do my last breath.

That’s the part that always gets me, Alice and Uncas’ unspoken love. In the original script, Alice and Uncas had a more intimate relationship (under the falls). It was cut from the final script so as not to take the viewers attention and empathy from the Cora and Hawkeye. However, I had read the book several years earlier and it is so different from the movie I don’t know how they can both have the same name. Although certain portions are similar, they are still very different. The best rendition was a mini-series shown on public television (in Los Angeles the channel was 28, KCET). Good God the music is so incredibly beautiful and moving, I mean the tears are streaming just hearing it. Incredibly powerful cinematography, some of the best work ever from the great Michael Mann, and that's saying something. One of the best and certainly most accessible performances ever from the supremely talented Daniel Day-Lewis. Outstanding supporting actors all down the line. Authentic set pieces beginning with the opening scene shot in one of the last true old growth forests in America all the way through to the breathtaking beauty and threatening exposure of the final battle on the cliff, easily one of the most thrilling fight scenes ever put to film. And as if all that weren't enough, running through the whole movie is the theme of the human spirit fighting and clawing its way to find some small space of freedom and solace in the wilderness. The only movie better than this is the original theatrical release version. For some inexplicable reason Michael Mann chose to cut out some of the best dialog, insert meaningless scenes that do nothing but slow the pace, and darn near ruin the ending. Find the original if you can. You won't believe how much better it is!

There are only two ways that I know of to find the original US theatrical release version. It is the version released on VHS. And it is available on DVD in the UK. I have both. Keep in mind that depending on your country you may have to program your DVD player to play a DVD sold in the UK. Some players let you do this as often as you like, some only a few times, some not at all. The VHS version on a good Hi-Fi VHS deck looks at least as good and sounds better than the UK DVD. Neither, of course, is anywhere near modern blu-ray fidelity. But it will be worth all for the ending alone. Compared to the original, the final scene in the Directors Cut feels like a sappy pave paradise put up a parking lot preach fest. Seriously. You won't believe how much better the original ending is. Think of all those DVD special features with the alternate endings. Are any of them ever anywhere near as good as the one they originally used? Of course not. Not even close. Same here. Find it. Watch it. You will see.

Thanks a lot for this specification! I will try to find this version within Internet, hopefully to be lucky in this case. I have some versions of the movie, with song at the end when the mohicans rescue Cora and Alice and version whithout song, only music.

The last of the Mohicans - the book written bu James Fenimore Cooper - was my first book, in Hungarian translation, back in Yugoslavia of the 1950s. The book had some stunning illustrations and I sadly have to remember that I lost this book, never knew where it went. I was brought to a new country by my parents, lots of memories being lost. But I still remember the Last of the Mohicans, almost word by word, it was an adventure of all times. I had some problems accepting this movie, but eventually I gave in, and I just want to say that it could,t have been made better. Much credits to all involved. A very sad movie, but that was the story, and we need stories and movies that leave us with wet eyes and tumbling thoughts. But in all this sadness there also is a victory, a triumph over the evil. I think the Nobel Prize Committee should consider JFC a winner worth to remember and given credits.. Dylan made money with some mediocre poetry and became a winner, that´s OK but JFC made far more than that - probably not much money, but being remembered by us that read his book is something to be acknowledged and rewarded.

Josef Nagy The movie itself is not exactly similar to the novel. Some scenes have been modified perhaps for the interest of the movie, which made me think about the purpose (s) behind such modfications. In some university literature classes, many studies have been conducted about the author himself and also on the content of the novel. Nevertheless, both the novel and the movie remain successful.

My mother, of Hungarian and Serbian decent, also read this book in her youth, growing up in Belgrade, way back before WW2!!!! Apparently, this novel has been of great significance, in Yugoslavia, for many decades!! My mother was born in 1915. Passed away in 2006. She told me that while reading this novel, she was in awe! Enchanted!!! Powerful, romantic, exotic and unforgettable!! Small world, you being from Yugoslavia! Be well!!

A great film summary! As a German, I would like to mention the English officer who wanted to marry Cora. As an English officer, it is an honour for him to defend his empire all over the world! His stoicism is magnificent! He gives his life for Lady Cora! The actor Steven Waddington is masterful! The courage of the man !!! ✋

A beautiful movie, with great music. To me the movie is as much of a classic tragedy, much like Titanic or Romeo and Juliet. The characters are out for revenge, slaves to their sense of duty, in love with the wrong person, etc. By the end of the movie practically everyone is dead. I find myself wondering, "if only they had not had the misfortune of meeting in the first place, maybe at least some, if not most of them, might have survived."

And yet if they had never met we would have been robbed of that very beauty. We need more films with this level of depth, they shine a light on us and show us our choices and what they mean.

That is a very nice way of looking at it, I would agree that more movies like this would be great. Too many movies now take place in a moral and consequence free vacuum. In real life, decisions and choices have consequences, sometimes unintended. Rather than the one dimensional bad guys of movies, life is full of flawed, sometimes damaged, people doing things that fit their perception of the world. Even Magua, the designated bad guy of Mohicans, has somewhat understandable reasons for his hated and thirst for revenge, and the (to him) insanity that the French and English have brought into his world, how they deal with each other, makes things even worse.

Don Gilleo, I can't disagree with anything you said :) there is a wonderful way the film, in order to increase the sense of power and doom those elements you pinpoint have, develops the sense of over-arching powers that are truly to blame for all the disagreements and pains that beset all concerned: Magua, Nat, even the English and French officers were compromised by their 'Masters' and their duty to their causes/beliefs. As you say there is a wonderful commentary on life here that is breath taking and stirring, and sorely lacking elsewhere. :)
