THE LAST OF US 1x9 BLIND Reaction Look For The Light SEASON FINALE - In flashback, Ellie's mother Anna is bitten by an infected as she gives birth to Ellie. She is found by Marlene, who hesitantly takes Ellie and kills Anna, at the latter's request. In the present, Firefly soldiers capture Ellie and knock Joel unconscious. After Joel awakens in a hospital, Marlene explains doctors are preparing Ellie for surgery to produce a cure, but the procedure will kill her. Marlene orders Joel to be taken away; however, he fights back and kills most of the soldiers and the lead surgeon. Joel finds Ellie and leaves the hospital. Marlene intercepts them, stating there is still time to find a cure, but Joel shoots and kills her. When Ellie wakes up, Joel lies and tells her the Fireflies had found other immune people and were unable to create a cure. As they hike to Jackson, Ellie expresses survivor guilt. She insists Joel swear his story about the Fireflies is true. She verbally accepts his words.

I have so many mixed feelings on Marlene and Joel's choices in this. I see both their sides. Also please know I don't hate Marlene i'm just hurt. I get Marlene didn't tell Ellie she was going to die because she did love her and didn't want to scare her. I get that Joel lied to Ellie because he loves her and probably didn't want to put the burden on her of knowing that maybe she is a cure but he's not willing to lose her and maybe he's eliminating Ellies choice so she wouldn't feel like she HAD to go through with it.

At the end of the day I don't think Marlene and the fireflies are any different from the solder who killed Sara back in episode one. He probably thought that only people in Huston were sick and that he was helping save the world by preventing the infection from spreading. It's the same thing from Joel's point of view.

Nah, Joel is just selfish. Spare yourself the mental gymnastics. He didn't want to lose his newfound daughter so he lied. Simple as that. Everyone around Ellie took her agency away. What Joel did might've actually been worse than what the Fireflies did. At least their intention was to do good. But every action will have consequences. Can't wait for season 2.

The irony is that Marlene didn't know Ellie so she didn't ask if she was okay with dying for a vaccine. If she had asked, Ellie would've said yes. Joel knows Ellie and he knows she would've said yes, that's why he lied. He knows he went against her wishes for his own selfish reasons.

It’s terrible that neither Marlene nor Joel gave Ellie the choice but Ellie definitely would’ve chosen to sacrifice herself if given the choice. The game made it more clear that she’s a death seeker in that final scene when she finally tells Joel about what happened to Riley. She said “I’m still waiting for my turn.” 😢 She wanted to save people like she couldn’t save Riley, Tess, or Sam.

It would be great that you watch gameplay of Part I and record it, you'll see that all the main core is the same (some things like this chapter are almost 1:1 from dialogues to music and even camerawork) but others are different. Now all of us who played the game have lived the differences knowing the game, but now it's gonna be fun how you, the people who experienced first the show, go into the game knowing what happens and see the OG story, characters and its differences. And don't worry about the ending and implications of the lie, it was the most discussed thing during 7 years between Part I and Part II and the second game has no problem showing everything that comes next. If you think you've been devastated, prepare for season 2 which will take you to very different places emotionally. Won't say anything else not to spoil you, but it'll be a hell of a ride.

What Joel made very clear in this episode is that he would do anything to prevent having his heart crushed again and torn from his chest. Unless you experienced loss in the same manner as Joel did with Sarah you could never fully understand what motivated him in that hospital, which I fear went somewhere beyond just love for Ellie. Joel in essence recovered a part of himself that he had lost so long ago and he's intent on never letting it go EVER again, if he can help it anyway. For 20 years, Joel has just been existing and once he met Ellie he actually began living again; so ask yourself, if you were Joel could you just give that up to go back to how you were?

The real question is: would you do it if you know Ellie will hate you for it? He knows Ellie wants to save the world and that she'd be willing to die if they asked. That's why he lies to her after he gets her out. What he did was selfish even if it was understandable. He didn't do what was best for her, he did what was best for him.

@@clarkmichaels822 I think everyone understands that Joel had selfish motivations for doing what he did but I think most parents would find it hard to reason that what was in a child's best interest is dying, when they are young and presumably healthy.

I'll give you a little perspective. When you play the game and you are Joel you are rooting for him 100%, but when you are watching as a bystander you can see the other side of the argument that his selfish act cost the world but in Joel's mind the world ain't worth saving if it costs Ellie's life

Hey , Deasha! As you looked up, Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie in the game, did, indeed, play Ellie's pregnant mom, Anna. The giraffes are straight out of the game. I'm so glad they kept that scene in! Save for the birth scene, Joel's attempted suicide story and a final action-packed push through a clicker- and bloater-infested tunnel en route to the hospital, the episode plays out almost exactly like the game! There are no other options! Neurosurgeons are a rarity in an apocalyptic world! Humanity's existence is poised on a knife's edge. The stakes are too big to risk Ellie saying 'no'. Joel sacrificed the lives of everyone in the hospital and everyone who dies of cordyceps from that day forward! Ellie had already decided before the hospital that she would see her mission through no matter what the cost and told Joel so. She said, "There's no halfway with this." Who wouldn't sacrifice themselves to save the world? It is her sole purpose for being. To deny fulfillment of this goal is to deny her destiny. Frankly, even if she didn't want to, she should be forced to kicking and screaming. It's devil's arithmetic but how would you feel if a loved one could have been spared but for the refusal of the one who carried the cure? What supreme arrogance! The big surprise at the end of the game is when you are forced to kill the entire medical team to advance the plot. The game doesn't move along until you slaughter them all. At that point, you realize that your POV character, Joel, is the villain who dooms the world for purely selfish reasons. Heroes sacrifice. Joel does not. Ellie knows he is lying to her but she accepts the lie out of love for her surrogate father because the truth of his monstrous, self-serving decision is too horrifying to acknowledge. The hero was the villain all along.

Just my opinion and it's a long one. No one has to see it the same way. But I'm on Ellie's side even though I love Joel. However, many see and use Ellie's site only to the extent that it justifies Joel's actions. Maria said to Ellie: "Be careful who you put your faith in. The only people who can betray us are the one we trust." And that's exactly what Joel is doing here. Any parent would at least try the same and so would I (but I wouldn't have lied and I would bear the consequences). But Joel is not Ellie's father. He only considers himself to be so, but this is not based on reciprocity. For Ellie, Joel is her only friend and protector, but at eye level. And neither of them would change that. Ellie wouldn't limit her autonomy and independence and Joel wouldn't expect that from her. And then there would no longer be a relationship on the same level. In this respect, they have never called their relationship as father and daughter. Ellie also doesn't seem to like the fact that Joel constantly compares her to his daughter. This clearly comes through in addition to her depression. In this respect, he never has the right to do what he has done, NOR DOES MARLENE. But both know the answer Ellie would give. Why did Joel lie to Ellie in the end? Because he actually knew better and still acted out of selfishness. Marlene, on the other hand, did not tell Ellie what they would do with her so as not to scare her unnecessarily. Marlene doesn't need Ellie's consent either, she would do it against Ellie's will for the world. Therefore, the argument that many bring that Marlene would be afraid Ellie would say "no" is nonsens. This is not decisive for her. Marlene is simply doing the same thing as the Fedra officer in episode 1 did with the infected boy. She also says this in this sense. We didn't tell her anything, she won't be feel fear. Marlene has another thing in common with Ellie. Ellie had to kill her girlfriend and for her it must all have some value. The same goes for Marlene. She had to kill her best friend and for both applies it must not have been in vain. Both lost their friends to the fungus, both had to end their lives. So yes, Marlene is in fact the only one who understands Ellie and she knows what Ellie would have wanted. Joel knows that too. An important difference to the game is the feeling you had when you freed Ellie. In the game, on the way to Ellie, you felt like a hero saving your daughter. Here in the series it becomes clear that Joel is not a hero. Supported by the score. Joel is the one who wipes everyone out and extinguishes the hope of saving humanity. I think it's good how this is presented here. How Joel is shown as he was for 20 years. Ruthless, unscrupulous, cold-blooded. And if for 20 years he had the reason to be like this so that his brother and Tess could survive, this is now replaced by selfishness. He has rolled through the hospital like a bulldozer. And that Ellie would have wanted this operation is not a question, after what she experienced and had to do. This was her chosen destiny after losing so many people to the fungus. She made a decision on the day Marlene told her about her imunity. Reinforced by the deaths of Riley and all after her. The first and only decision Ellie could ever make about her life. So far, others have always been determined over her live. Joel took that away from her. And not only that, he took away everything she fought for and what she went through. 3 weeks after Riley's death, which she had to cause, Marlene has given her a meaning that could have saved all humanity. Joel gave her a life with survivor guilt multiplied by all humanity. She has to live with the fact that all the people who died for her and will die in the future, died for nothing. Her mother, Riley, Sam and Henry, and if she finds out the truth one day, she will blame herself for the hospital carnage and Marlene's death. All died for her or because of her and all in vain. But the most important thing for Joel is now he has found a replacement for Sarah. Because that's exactly how it feels after comparing Ellie to Sarah all the time. The argument Ellie is still a child and cannot make this decision is nonsense. Ellie hasn't been a child in her head for a long time. She lives in a world where you grow up quickly. She killed, saved lives, injured people, was almost r*p*d and chopped up. She has made mature decisions several times. The last of these was to stand against Joel and go on with a very grown-up reason. She is the only one who can and should make this decision about her life. Nobody needs to come with the reason that it was not certain that the operation would succeed and that a serum could be produced. Everyone involved believed in it, including Joel. The motives of the characters counts. People like to invent ways that the show or game didn't bring in to justify Joel's actions. In fact, the only thing Joel said was "find someone else". So if it were up to him, another child could die instead of Ellie. Joel has accepted that Ellie brings the cure to the world as a fact. And even if there were other immunes out there, Joel also killed probably the only brain surgeon with that kind of knowledge who could have done such an operation. That was a decision he was not allowed to make for Ellie. No matter if he feels that way, he is not her father. And because Joel knows all this, he ends up lying to Ellie. And Ellie already knows at the moment that he is lying, when she asks if Marlene is ok and he says nothing. She got the same answer when she asked if Joel had killed innocent people. He lies so that he can continue to be her Daddy without consequences for himself. So he takes another decision away from Ellie. Namely, whether she still wants to continue to be connected to him amicably, trustingly. But what is really bad is that he interrupts Ellie when she wants to say him for the first time how she feels, and then he gives her a piece of advice that he himself has just not followed. He interrupts her so that he does not have to listen any further, so that he can continue to justify his act for himself. Ellie knows that Joel is lying 100%. Nevertheless, she chooses him over his lies. He means the world to her and all she has is him. Her greatest fear of ending up alone certainly plays a role. They love each other and would do anything for each other. Or it is rather dependency. I would like to point out a very interesting conversation that took place in the pilot episode between Tommy, Joel and Sarah. This was about love and dependence. Tommy comes into the kitchen and greets Joel and Sarah with a not so nice word. Sarah to Joel: "Oooh, he loves you" Joel: "He is dependent on me. It's not the same." Sarah: "I think it's the same" I think this conversation is very interesting in connection with the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. To what extent is this love. To what extent is it dependence. To what extent do the two things go together? And are Joel and Ellie even on the same page when it comes to that? Or confuse both love with dependence. I also find the conversation between Joel and Ellie questionable in which he tells her that he wanted to kill himself. The conversation itself was okay, but I don't think it's okay to tell her that she's the reason he sees life positively again. He puts even more pressure on Ellie. He made himself dependent on her existence and let her know that. That's not right. She now constantly has in her head how he will feel when she is away. Well, the authors of the game had not thought of a continuation of the game at that time. That's the advantage of the series. They can prepare much better for the upcoming season and thus make everything that comes in part 2 more comprehensible for everyone. This was an excellent but unfortunately much too short episode. The whole series was just great. I'm looking forward to the second season. Ellie not only has the knife from her mother, but also the jacket she lay in as a baby. The giraffe was real. Her name is Nabo or Nobu. Something like that. Ashley Johnson (OG Ellie) played Elli's mother. Laura Bailey the voice actor of Abby from TLOU2 was one of the assistant doctors. It has been confirmed that season 2 and 3 are ordered and both should include part 2 of the game. But with big changes. Which unfortunately makes me very skeptical when this change affects a certain major event. I think part 2 is the perfect game as a perfect sequel to the events of part 1. If this event is omitted, it will ruin the entire feeling. Then this would no longer be part 2 if the basis for it is taken away. I've played both games together 20 times and I love them. I love this series. The best I've seen in a long time. I love Joel and Ellie. I feel the need to play again now with the knowledge of what is now added by the series.

The most amazing thing about this show (and the game) is how incredibly flawed Joel is, yet we fall in love with him anyway. We've been there since the beginning and we understand him. That's what makes the last scene so hard. You know he's in the wrong for killing innocent people who are only looking for a cure, yet they aren't entirely in the right either - so there's SOME justification we all want to reach for. Although... there are a lot of ethical issues in what they've done, even beyond not giving her a choice. "Do no harm" is a code all doctors should live by. It's not right to tell a child, a severely depressed child who is struggling to find meaning, that if she dies she might save the world. We all know Ellie would have agreed to it, but under the circumstances... the question shouldn't be asked at all. It's an incredible burden to place on someone that young. And of course, there's the obvious fact that killing the one immune person in a pandemic is probably not the best approach. Do we REALLY have to go straight for the brain just because the doctor has a theory? Like. Seems excessive. But that's not the point of the question story is really posing to us. We have to believe that the cure WILL work. Playing the game was very unsettling because you play AS Joel (except for a brief time when you get to play as Ellie). For hours upon hours, you are literally in his shoes - and when you're gaming, you think of the character you control as yourself. At the end when you realize he's going to get Ellie, you have no choice but to kill everyone in your way or you won't get to the end of the game. I don't know if he made the RIGHT decision because the moral implications are so complicated, but he made the decision we all expected him to make. That's what's so HARD. We love Joel and while we can't APPLAUD the things he does, we understand them. But poor Ellie. She never had any control or agency in all of this. While I was watching your commentary, I realized the only person who really gave her a decision about her future (and told her the TRUTH) was the FEDRA officer in episode 7. That makes me sad. :(

I think Joel did the right thing, or at least it's what I would have done. However I would handled things way different and not just go murdering everyone. Sure kill the ones who are shooting at me, but he really didn't have to kill the doctor bc he had a gun and all the doctor had was a scalpel. Joel just never thinks things through. He's very flawed when it comes to that. If Ellie got upset, so be it. I mean Joel did it out of love. She'd get over it over time. And they can always try and find a way to a cure later on like Marlene said. All in all, a great series, and Deashas reaction vids I'd say were the best out all tuber reactors for this series.

Joel made 2 mistakes. First mistake was leaving the nurses alive in that room. I would’ve made sure no one would even know to come after Ellie. Once in the car I would’ve been honest with her: “Ellie they lied to you. They were going to kill you. If that’s what you want, we can find another doctor. Find another way. But it has to be your choice” And let the chips fall were they may. There was no need to leave survivors at the hospital and no need to lie to her.

He lies to Ellie. Ellie never gets to have a choice either from Marlene or Joel. They all take it away from here. In the end humanity is doomed and that is what the creators are trying to say. @Solar-td4fj
@Solar-td4fj Жыл бұрын
That's not actually true. Joel did ask her (they discussed multiple times, including this episode), and in all of them, Ellie wanted to go on living with Joel. What too many forget is that as far as Ellie knew, being the cure meant giving some of her blood and that was it. She was never told she'd have to die for it. Marlene decided to go ahead and kill her without letting her know or decide, probably out of fear that she would say no. To highlight the difference more, Joel did ask to speak with her once he found out of the plan, he was at least open to that discussion, and again it was Marlene who decided for Ellie, and decided to shut down Joel while threatening him in the process. At that point there really wasn't anything Joel could do other than to either save Ellie or let her get killed. Joel then lying about what happened wasn't taking away any choice from her since there was no choice to be made by then, he was merely trying to hide his shame for what he did to protect Ellie, while at the same time actually keeping the image Ellie had of Marlene intact, like a parent that shields a child from the wrongdoings of the other parent.
