The fact that this show wasn’t shot on film makes me really mad. I think it’s a prime example how modern cinematographers just except a inferior look and medium as standard and don’t do material like this the justice it deserves. I remember being a teenager who just started to become interested in filmmaking and from the first frame of the original game I though, his looks like it would be shot on film it was a movie. And they’re not even shooting on any special camera (which kinda saves it a little bit). They’re shooting on the regular Alexa Mini. Meaning there is no theoretical advantage in terms of low light performance, depth of field, or resolution over Kodak 5219. And as many have proven, the pando doesn’t make it impossible to shoot on film. It’s just nuts. This should have been shot on 35mm with Panavision Primos. At least they didn’t shoot in 2.00:1.

This is exactly what I thought at first, but I have to say at this point I kinda appreciate the way they approached the cinematography. In my opinion the documentary-ish style really works for this show. However, just like you said, I also do think that 35mm would have worked wonderful for this show. Especially combined with the handheld and naturalistically lighting approach, would love to have seen that. Maybe they chose digital just to make the workflow easier, since they relied heavily on vfx.

@@rickpostdp That’s a common misconception but once you go 35mm it’s the same as shooting digital for VFX. And Kodak 5219 is basically the same in terms of actual resolution and noise as the Alexa Mini they shot on. Same for low light. Film is probably a little better than the classic Alexa sensor too.
