I don’t think the “your watch is broken” scene was to show insensitivity to Joel, but instead it draws a parallel between Sarah and Ellie having similar traits. If you recall earlier in the episode, Sarah tells Joel “your shirt is inside-out”. This “callout” by Ellie helps show why Joel and Ellie will eventually be a good father/daughter pairing…because that was Joel’s relationship with his daughter in the past. Joel sees something in Ellie that reminds him of Sarah.

I thought it was clever that the first signs of disturbance was in Indonesia, because that (a) lulls you into a false sense of security that it won’t affect you where you live, and (b) it reveals the scale and magnitude of the unfolding situation. If it was instead presented as a local situation you could reasonable considering getting a boat and traveling someone safe. Knowledge of the Indonesia situation leaves you with few options.

Rob, I totally agree with you about the way they handled the reveal of Ellie being infected. It's a super important moment but it was rushed and treated as (unintentionally) insignificant in the show. Even knowing the game, I felt thrown off. They might have that conversation from the game at the start of the next episode but I thought it could have been handled better for a big ending in the premiere. Also, being a little skeptical of Bella initially, I thought she crushed.

I believe the "rushed" immunity reveal were intentional by the creator, in order to create a "Wait what?" moment for the NON-gamer audience and a hook for them to come back and watch next episode to find out exactly more. I dare say a more "serious" discussion regarding the bite wound will be discussed between the trio as they navigates the skyscraper. Actually, at risk of this comment not aging well, I would even go so far as to predict that the first half of episode 2 will be in flashback, revealing Ellie's past much like the first half of E1 revealed the past of Joel. In this first half of E2 we will get to see Ellie and his mom (apparently played Ashley Johnson), her relationship with Riley, and ultimately how they got bitten, and how this series of event shaped Ellie's personality as we know her today (when she met Joel and Tess). The second half of E2 will be back to the present as they carries on with the zombie slaying adventure.

That’s not the point tho. Of course they’re gna explain it properly the next episode. But Ellie being immune is literally the driving force of the entire story. Yes they didn’t have much time at the end but they wrote the episode! They could have made more time for that specific moment or left it entirely for the next. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved the episode other than that moment. But that should have been the pinnacle of this episode not a 1 line set up to tease!

1st time listen, came for the show deep dive and comparison... I love the game and the story of our Lone Wolf and his wolf club. I totally get it, I am a mom and I would do anything to protect my child. The whole panel did great but I have to say the guy who mainly talked speaking about his wife's confusion with is Ellie infected or not that's the part of the story figuring that out. His wife should be asking those questions. My advice would be take your self out the expectations you have set and just enjoy this different medium. It is clear you also love the story but Def might be having a hard time due to your love of the game. Great video!

They've removed spores as the infection medium from the series so that they don't have to cover the actors faces with gas masks so you can't see their expressions, so where does the infection come from? Food. Probably grain or yeast. The old lady was being fed biscuits at the beginning, which Joel and Sarah turned down. It'll be food.

The game that are usually name dropped especially on this channel God of War, Cod and on occasion Bioshock. But man I wish Mass effect would get this kind of treatment, it would be expensive has hell to do, but imagine if HBO did get it? It would become what Star wars is for Disney or Stark Trek for Paramount. And HBO hasn't really had a prestige going to the stars science fiction show. Amazon might be a better fit fit in terms of money, but their track record while I love the boys isn't at a HBO yet. If the show starts becoming a smashing success. I have a feeling you will see studios try and get many of the most popular adventure games like a life is strange, Disco Elysium, OxenFree or wolf among us (even though that is technically based on a comic). And maybe the Oscar Isaac metal gear solid movie will actually happen before he gets too old. Although since it's only possible to do a good job adapting the first game into a movie. And you would need to make it into a show if you were going to adapt the others. He might be too old by the time they got around to MGS3. Which is a shame since that is the best story in the entire series.

This is probably the first time a video game adaptation adds a story and character motivation that is better than the game. I'm gonna be honest I hadn't actually thought about it before. Them taking the job in the game doesn't make as much sense as it does in the show. Yes they do go out of the QZ to smuggle things in the game but it's not like we get the impression that they spend extreme prolonged periods of time outside of it. So taking the job means they won't be able to go back to Boston (in either version) even if everything has gone smoothly. In the show Joel not being able to get ahold of Tommy. Is a good enough reason for me to think he would leave his life in Boston behind. Again in never thought about it in the game, they were promised things they wanted and that was good enough reason for me since even before playing I knew that it was really the journey with Ellie that matters. I was generally a fan of every tweak or addition. Who knows how much they might end up changing but so far. I hope these are the kinds of details they keep changing up. So even when I know the major plot beats we get built upon story that we couldn't see because the games POV is mostly from Joel except winter. Feeling like they did happen we just didn't get see them. Not that the bar was high but this is the bar now and I really hope Hollywood will follow suit after this. Start thinking of adapting games the same way you do a book. Instead of just taking the character name, look and concept and what often feels like a script written for different movie and then just combined.

I loved this episode. The car chase scene was really incredible. I have to agree with Rob that the second half did feel a little off. I knew what was happening because of the game but I don’t think the show did a great job of explaining Firefly’s vs Fedra. I was listening to a podcast with Troy Baker who said this episode was 2 before cut into 1 so that episode 2 can move forward with how the rest of the show will likely be. They probably felt like 2 episodes might lose some of the audience if they don’t show why this is unique and different from previous zombie shows

I just bought the gm just to see what the hype was about and today I just finished that scene. Wow what a difference. Definitely rushed. In the gm they emphasize on the impact it has on Joel and Ellie.... the show doesn't. Either way... it's an awesome show so far.

It was basically a riff on Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" so even though I hadn't played the video game, I knew the gimmick. Basically, if you've read the book, you know what's coming. It was telegraphed from miles away. It's basically Richard Matheson with influences from Fallout and The Walking Dead. But I was ok with that because of the acting and because the show has a lot of heart. But based on everyone's love for the video game, I actually was expecting something more original.

This was a great opening episode. The probability of climate change affecting the microbiological environment is real(!). As the Arctic permafrost melt increases over time - due to global warming - more of the Siberian tundra is melting and so releasing hitherto frozen viruses and bacteria which are thousands of years old. Incidentally, I am a little surprised that none of you made any reference to the C-19 pandemic and the spread of that disease. Was this a deliberate choice? if so why? The first 30mins vividly brought back memories to me of the oncoming wave of infection and the horrible stresses this brought. The relevancy of this show to our real world experiences of a global pandemic are obvious. BOTF!

John, a little heads up: At 47:50, one of your viewers made a joke about Thandiwe Newton being de-aged. Of course, they were talking about her daughter, Nico, who looks just like her mother. However, I noticed you guys mistakenly corrected "Thandiwe" to "Thandie". Thandiwe Newton explained back in 2021 that she would like to revert her name to its original spelling and pronunciation. Thandiwe is a Zimbabwean name pronounced "tan-DEE-way". As I know you love Thandiwe Newton's work and are very careful to always pronounce names right, I thought I should leave a comment to inform you of this change! Thanks for another great show!
