Joel stepping on the dry tendril shows that it's no longer capable of transferring information through the mycelial network that fungi really use to communicate and transfer nutrients back and forth between plants and fungi. In mycology, the mycelial network of fungi is sometimes known as the "wood wide web" because it transfers information and nutrients across a wide area of interconnected plants and fungi.

At 6:47 you were taking about if they were going to talk specifically about how the clickers aren’t able to see and that they use clicks to hear where things are. Earlier in the episode, Ellie talks to Joel and Tess about the rumors she’s heard of certain types of zombies, and she mentions one that has its face split open and sees like a bat. They share a knowing, serious look, which sets up the clickers perfectly. So, they did talk about it, just not in a super obvious way, which I liked.

I kinda liked the extra realism as well in the clicker scene. Making mistakes, no one hit headshot kill, missing shots, and strategizing on the fly. Wish they had the museum basement scene. Where you start the generator and all hell breaks lose. That would be so scary as an adaptation as well.

My only issue with Ellie being silly in the hotel is it happens too soon. She doesn't start doing stuff like that until later when she's been spending more time with Joel and both of them are more comfortable with each other. In the game it happens much later in Pittsburgh.

It's not the roots that alert the infected per se. It's the mycelial strands in the soil that can spread for miles that alerts them. That exists in real life and they almost resemble dense spiderwebs in the soil. Mycilia isn't mentioned in the game, but I thought it was an awesome and clever addition to the show to make the infected that much scarier.

I thought the second episode did a great job of showing the Joel-Ellie relationship evolving from a "mission" to more human connection. The score and ambient noises create this incredible unrest, where you're on the edge of your seat waiting for something to happen. Even the frog on the piano was creepy as hell.

10:30 My take on this particular scene with Ellie and Joel is very different from Beau's. Joel and Ellie ARE stilted with each other.-- not Pedro and Bella. I took it as a perfect depiction of what's happening between them during this part of their journey. Ellie's begun to bond with Tess, but Joel's keeping his guard up with her. He refuses to let her in, emotionally, even a little bit, and he's also still scanning her for any evidence of infection and readying himself to have to execute her if necessary. Ellie uses snark with Joel, because she can sense that he's not only keeping his guard up, but he's really willing to execute her at the first sign of infection. Still, she's curious about what's out there, which FEDRA clearly doesn't let the inhabitants of the QZ know. Ellie's a fast learner-- very smart. She knows Joel has information she needs, so she's not going to avoid asking questions, even if he's short with her. Joel's standoffish, suspicious, and muted. He doesn't let people in. Ellie's curious and flippant, even when it would be best to not be. The dialogue between them gave us more clarity into who they are as individuals, at that moment in time, not who they're going to be as a unified pair. I loved that scene.

I think what really makes the CGI shots of the city stand out; and you mentioned 'I Am Legend' which is the last film I remember watching that really implemented it well; is the 'nature reclaims apocalyspe' approach for buildings and vegetation. IAL is a book solely about humanity's apocalyse and nothing else. Nature rebounds. Can't play LoU but from the visuals it always makes me think of the the film

At around 15 min, you mentioned Joel's hope & desperation. Now, I don't know if this is too much but there are easter eggs all over the place. Notice how much of green (symbol of hope) background remains behind Ellie and behing Joel in the building scene (in your clip 10:30-10:54). While there are some torn pieces behing Ellie, Joel's green background is very much torn apart.

I love how they are gradually building the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Especially when they had their moment alone when Tess went to find a way to open up a door for them. The spacing and timing was perfectly done. It showed Joel's apprehension on opening up to her while it shows Ellie's curiosity and inquisitiveness to ask him about his life. That scene gave us the preamble to their relationship growing from here on out.

11:20 - Not all of the city landscape is green screen. It’s very practical. It was shot downtown Edmonton and Calgary using the two cities skyline then just adding the debris and natural overgrowth later. They blocked off many streets and made it look like a total wasteland with flipped cars, rubble etc… the big crater in the ground where the bomb was dropped was really neat. I remember walking around the set in Edmonton and seeing this massive blue screen laying on the ground and being so curious of how it would look in post. Their ability to use the real downtown streets make it look so real and beautiful which was absolutely essential to the success of the show. Alberta is quickly becoming a filmmaking hotspot for major productions.

So, when Tess, Joel and Ellie walk into the museum, and they see that freshly dead guy on the floor (12:19), that is the same guy who later walks up to Tess and and gives her that "kiss" at (17:48), right before she blows the place up. Joel starting with an assault rifle (and getting jumped by a clicker regardless) felt like such a nice reversal of the game… Like, one aspect of video games that doesn’t translate well to television is that whole power progression thing, where your player-character is continually gaining more and more agency in order to keep heightening the excitement of the gameplay. Honestly, I’m liking the show very much, but for certain scenes I definitely prefer the cutscenes from the game. It’s just to do with “more is less”. I preferred tess’ death in the game because it didn’t need to be epic to be emotional. Likewise, the driving sequence in the beginning didn’t need a massive plane crash to feel terrifying and high stakes. Overall though, it is a great tv show, and I understand these things need to change to fit a new medium, but that’s just my opinion as a fan of the game.

They're probably shake lights. The ones you just shake around for a bit to charge an electromagnetic battery. Good ones can last a long time and don't ever need new batteries. 1. They are smugglers, they smuggle. 2. They didn't know everyone was dead. If they started working on the truck, someone could have taken it not well, and shot them. Then... Once inside the building, there was no chance to get back to the truck for the battery.
