I am a 44 yr old father of 2 daughters who never played the games and knew nothing about them until the show. I cried like a baby in front of my teenage daughters who had never seen me cry. I was emotionally exhausted after this episode. I never would have imagined a tv show about zombies and a relationship between 2 men could connect with me on an emotional level about love sacrifice and purpose. my kids kept saying "papi are you ok" ..... Bill's love for Frank is how I view my love for my wife and kids best episode of television I have ever seen.

Bill saved Frank, and Frank saves Bill. Without them Joel and Ellie don’t get supplies or a vehicle to get out. Not to mention that gun that Ellie acquired, will come back in a big way, to save Joel? Purpose.

I think you guys missed a point with the timing of their death. Bill started playing the 80’s Radio song at the end of the first episode. So they died the night that Joel, Tess, and Ellie left the QZ

I think Frank and Bill died a week before Joel, Tess and Ellie left the QZ.. at the end of Ep 1, they showed the radio turn on n it was playing an 80s hit - which means trouble. When Joel and Ellie entered Bill's bunker, he said that the music was playing cz it was a fail safe of it the code had not been reset in a week.

The flowers died too quick for just a week no? We see Bill water them on the last day. When Joel walks up he sees they're dying. Not fully but still pretty bad. So probably a month or so no? I don't think the flowers would look that bad in a week. But idk I'm not a gardening expert 😅

To me, this wasn't a side plot at all, because Bill's letter is a spot on mirror of Joel's inner life. He had a reason to live in his daughter and he failed her, and he had another reason to live in Tess, and he failed her. And, just like Bill, Joel wanted to die rather than continue living after both those losses. Joel was never gonna tell us, or any character in the story, what's going on with him. This was a *brilliant* b-story mirroring the main story.

@@jesorinsekwa4054 Yeah I think that was actually what I was thinking of, but I think that comparison is fitting in both instances. That's one thing I respect I appreciate about Craig Mazin and even Neil Druckman, they both respect their audience. They don't feel they need to explain every nuance and handhold us, that the imagery tells the story. I know neither directed this episode, I'm sure every other director is on board with their vision and even though this is what they call a "Standalone" episode it still serves the overarching narrative and someone who has played both games numerous times and that owns every version of the 1st game, I've actually been completely on board with all of the additions and or subtractions. Like the JC crew said story beats that work in the game don't always translate to film whether movie or show. Now as much as me and my fiance are in love with this episode, I am with most people that have played the game that even with all the beauty and wonder in this episode. I still think we should have gotten some of the Ellie, Joel, and Bill interaction, especially Ellie and Bill. Some of the best and funniest dialogue in the whole game and I think Bella and Nick would have destroyed! All that being said I think people should stop and realize that this show is a cultural event, almost what the walking dead seemed it was on it's way to doing. (Scott Gimple mistake. Getting rid of Darabont.) Anyways didn't mean to drone on with this soliloquy, but in closing I love this show and I pray they keep the momentum.

I genuinely don't get how people can say this is a filler episode, it's literally a part of the journey of Joel and Ellie, we just got more backstory showing how it got to the point where they arrived in Bill's house, while also showing what's still worth fighting for in this world and I'm not even gonna talk about the importance of that letter to Joel. Funny how when the show is super faithful to the game people complain "what's the point of me watching it then hurr durr" and when the show takes it's own approach to characters while still giving them the same purpose they had in the game, people complain about too many changes. The IMDB review bomb was so cringe and just showed how many crybabies there are in this community, I feel sorry for the actors involved in season 2, cause the immature people who attacked Laura Bailey will surely go at it again.

loved that point about "how everyone knows Joel's dangerous" brings me back to Marvel movie where there was a complaint how no one really felt "Gomorra was dangerous" but the movies only ever verbally brought it up/named her as "galaxy's most fierce fighter" (or something like that).. but in this show, we kinda are 'demonstrated to' who and what...and how (dangerous) Joel is.

@SteveBonario

Because the window was open in the bedroom , when Joel slightly opens the bedroom door the air pressure change pulled the main door closed. When you learn later that they left the window open, it reinforces the reality of these details (that the front door would close) and that Joel and Ellie don't know about the window being open so it adds a little to the mystery of what's going one (we know more than Joel and Ellie, but not everything -- it's masterful storytelling and engages us as viewers/audience).

I think the episode was really well done. I loved getting more backstory for bill and really allowing his character to shine. However, the only issue I had with it was that while what we got was really good, it sacrificed everything we love about bill from the game. No more arguing with Joel and Ellie, no more awesome adventure to get the battery for the truck. His entire impact on their journey is reduced to a single note that is read by Ellie. A powerful and meaningful scene, yes. But that erased all the other moments we loved about him. I was super pumped when Nick Offerman was cast, and his acting was phenomenal, but I can't help but see this as both great and wasted potential. I wanted to see his best moments from the game, as well as his backstory. Removing him from Ellie's journey felt unnecessary and forced in my opinion. I still liked the episode as a whole, but for some reason I just can't get right with that one single choice.

And I struggle to find anything that does what Mr. Robot did for me. If you know you know. Ha. Not gay. So don't want to speak for anyone. But Frank is, in my opinion a great depiction of what I think alot of men these days are dealing with. They are in a box and will take the end of the world for them to accept who they are. As I see that is, that Bill would have lost his purpose in life and would have been a crying, destroyed, grief-ridden, nihilist. He would have been in an awful state. I think the ending was beautiful and loving and something that us who have lost can recognize completely. His choice was his and it was the way he wanted to leave with Frank. Paying attention to things, is how we show love. Without Frank there won't be anything to pay attention to.

As some one who doesn't play the games. I didn't expect this treatment for ep3. To be honest I was going along traditional troupes. Thinking it would go badly during the scene where Bill meets Frank. Especially the way it was framed during the earlier scenes(think strangulation, or backstabbing, other Walking Dead surprises). But when it didn't happen, what a breath of fresh air. Amazing episode, watched it a second time. On a side note, interesting camera setup, but not a fan of the resolution/quality and Kris and Rob's sitting posture, looks slightly uncomfortable(but understand the limitation). Would be funny if John could pull off the 'Friends' couch setup.

This episode was absolutely fucking amazing yes I would of liked to see bill interact will Ellie and Joel like the games however I can sit here and say I fucking loved that episode and even tho upset I didn't get to see that I'm very ok with what we got and doesn't improve or takeaway from the games was just perfect for the shows trajectory and the road it's going on separate to the games and the change was very applicable for the show. I loved it I was emotional in every moment really enjoyed this one. Also this is a prime example of just because you played the game and the show is "spoiled" already. This whole episode shows that it doesn't matter and you can expect anything to change and grow and even be better. Maybe hinting at a big change for part 2 who knows a little longer with a certain character wouldn't be out of question at this point I have high high hopes for season 2 now Bill and Frank's purpose in the show to me is supposed to be a mirror for Joel and Ellie bill Is a survivor but also finds someone to protect and live for. Joel in a similar fashion had Tess who now is dead and sacrificed herself to save someone and potentially have a cure for humanity. Joel needs to find his person again to survive for in ellie. Bill in the game was an example for Joel on how not to go on living just seeing Ellie as a job but here in the show it's an example of how he should live and survive and how bill and Joel are alike and how he needs to find what bill had with Frank in Ellie because he doesn't have Tess anymore and has experienced so much loss in his life that he has become a broken man a man who is lost and this is the true journey of the last of us that's the beauty of it. It's not a zombie story it's a story of humanity in its light and dark moments Joel being the dark and Ellie the light surviving having hope for something more than surviving and I love that this show is expanding that and bringing us these beautiful human moments. Also fuck people who are complaining that there gay has nothing to do with it. Was a love story and was done amazing.

This episode was some Oscar worthy stuff. Regarding game adaptations, here's the issue ... we don't have many examples of adaptations that stay true to the source material. They often create entirely new storylines, disregarding what made the game successful in the first place. Examples include Assassin's Creed, WarCraft, Resident Evil, Uncharted, etc. All of them feature completely new stories, not taken from the games. While deviating from the source and writing original material can work (e.g. Arcane / TLOU Episode 3), it doesn't always pan out. The Last of Us is one of the rare game adaptations that stays faithful to the game's story and characters (with the exception of Episode 3, which is mostly new material). I believe it would be smarter for studios to adapt what works and build upon that, instead of constantly starting from scratch. Currently, there isn't enough evidence to argue that staying close to the source material won't be successful because there just aren't enough examples.

On its own it was a great episode. It was very well written and acted. Still, it does feel a bit like filler, because it seems like nothing we saw is going to matter going forward. If Bill was going to be a reoccurring character, then I would understand how understanding his backstory would be important in explaining the decisions he is making that affects the main characters, but since no living character saw what we saw, it seems unimportant to the main story. Joel could have just found the letter, took the supplies, and left, and the story would not have changed a bit.
@Kreence
@Kreence Жыл бұрын
What he wrote on the letter is the key here. Cause what bill said in the end of the letter ends up the driving factor of joels final decision. Now I understand for new commers to the show it may seems filler. But those final words in the letter will tie in in the ending. What episode 3 did, is show us love The general meaning of love and the fear of a possibility of losing that certain love. Cause keep in mind that joel is a heartless character in those past 20 years.

shows why media literacy needs to be a thing. Bill’s story is thematically tied to Joel (because they’re similar people) and gives reasoning/context to the entirety of Joel’s growth as a character, and the decision he eventually makes. They spell it out for you at the end of the episode and people STILL missed the point
@baertheblader9402
@baertheblader9402 Жыл бұрын
@@ashwilliams9395 ok, but didn’t he already decide to take care of Ellie? Tess accomplished that. Just my opinion. I never played the games, so I don’t know if it eventually comes back around and ties in. For me in this moment I am very invested in Joel and Ellie and whether they will make it to the Fireflies. So this episode slowed down that progress for me. I hope it eventually ties in, I just wish they kept Bill alive so this time I invested in caring about him would have a point beyond this one episode.

Last of us. My episode rating EP1 9/10 EP2 8/10 EP3 6/10 EP1 One of the best pilot of TV history and the Flashback was emotional and flowed perfectly. Negative The explanation of how the virus is spread. EP2 Really good world building, intense scenes, and the Flashback was really well acted and flowed well with the world building. Negative A character dying ( I don’t like characters that I like dying 😂) EP3z Well Writing and Directed Love Story. Negative a love story that didn’t have anything to do with Joel or Ellie or there mission. 80%-90% of the episode was a filler. If someone missed the episode all you have to say is “Ellie kills a clicker that couldn’t move, Ellie has a gun, and they have a truck”.

@@TrueSamuraiHero i think you need to add "Joel reads a letter from Bill hearing what he needs to hear so he can be motivated to protect Ellie". Thats why i like this episode. The filler adds context to the letter so it adds more impact to the audience. .

May I express something without getting banned? I just want to speak candidly and say: John, I agree 10000% when you say that when there’s a movie/show/wtvr with a race swap, if it ends up bad it’s not because the race swap - *OF COURSE that’s true.* And of course there are some bigots out there. But IMHO, just like when something is bad it’s not BECAUSE of the race swap, similarly if someone doesn’t like a movie it doesn’t mean they dislike it BECAUSE of the race swap. I feel like there have been times where you gave off a vibe like “people who didn’t like X movie/show are bigoted basement-dwelling whatever.” Just cuz there’s a race swap doesn’t mean a movie is bad, but simultaneously just cuz someone doesn’t like a movie doesn’t mean they dislike it BECAUSE OF the race swap. Do u get what I’m saying? (I’m really not saying anything contentious or controversial here. Yet I’ve noticed that a giant number of KZbinrs will straight up hide people from their channel just for the slightest push back, so now I’m all paranoid that I’m gonna get banned for even the slightest feedback lol 😰😰😰)

That’s never happened. I am always very clear about that. Saying “I feel like you give off a vibe” is laughable because it doesn’t require any proof. I can explicitly say something clearly… but if you say “I feel like you give off a vibe” it’s a cop out.

@@johncampea I’ve watched hundreds of your shows, so I don’t remember specific examples off the top of my head. It’s just what I remember feeling a couple times when you were (rightfully) going off about “knuckle draggers.” THAT SAID, you talked about some such issue a week or so ago (see, I already can’t remember specifics 😅. TLOU review bomb maybe?) and you made it *abundantly* clear that there are people who legitimately criticize something sincerely, and you very clearly distinguished between those people vs bigots. I really really appreciated that; that was awesome. (The narcissist in me wants to believe that my comment had it fresh in your mind 😇). Either way, it’s cool as hell of you that u replied to my comment and didn’t just shadow ban. Thx dude. You’re good peoples Campea.

I loved the episode. It made me cry. I can’t remember any media making me cry since Red Dead 2. That said, I really don’t like the show’s version of Ellie. It’s probably not Bella’s fault - it’s probably how they wrote her. I don’t like that she’s so bitchy and sarcastic. She’s not like that in the game. Perhaps a tiny bit, but in the game* she’s cuter and more endearing and sweet. She walks around whistling and is constantly amused and she tries to connect with Joel.

I’m very torn with this show now. All three episodes have been terrific but after the third episode I just feel let down. The first episode removed the shootout between Joel and Tess and Robert and his men at the docks. The second episode cut out the scenes in the office building. Nearly every single action and suspense scene has been removed. By the time the third episode ends we’ve skipped the subway scene, the refrigerator scene, and the high school scene. There is just so much that’s been removed. Story is more important than anything else. When you have a good story you can forgive everything else, but I’m sad cause all these amazing suspenseful scenes I was looking forward to are just all gone, every single one.

I think if the show were to include all the action scenes from the games the violence and action would become repetitive and boring really quickly. Those segments are fun to play in the game but in a tv show it would just slow down the plot and make for repetitive television.

Yeah, I agree. They should have kept the upside down scene but with just 2 clickers and Ellie throwing bottles to distract them while she cuts the rope. But Joel falling to the ground attracts them to him. He kills one and then runs out of bullets. Thats when Bill shows up with a sword to rescue them.

@@alexmartinez9097 the important bit is: "because of some man on man love" everyone who dislikes the episode isn't a homophobe. It's those who dislike it because they hate gay people or have an issue with the fundamental concept of a gay love story. There are unfortunately many of those people.
