You're right, the host needs to be alive in order for the fungus to have something to control. That's the principal difference between "infected" and "zombies." Additionally, because the infected are still alive, you don't necessarily need to shoot them in the head to kill them. This difference is also why some in the fanbase will yell at you for calling them zombies.

Plus during one area of the game you can find an Infected female weeping as she consumes a person, presumably a friend or family member.

The fungus was spread by certain food products such as flour and grains. They narrowly escaped infection by not eating pancakes for breakfast and biscuits offered by the neighbors.

Nico Parker (Sarah) looks just like her mom (Thandiwe Newton), and inherited her moms acting talent as well. In the game it can travel through spores. They changed it so they didn't have to have actors in gas masks all the time. Or we could have had another show with Pedro's faced covered constantly. 🤣
