I write this for the edification of those who rely on the comments in making choices. 😊This film is simple,straightforward,and good.not without muscle and teeth ,but no gratuitous violence or posturing macho men. I enjoyed it immensely . The story was enjoyable and reasonable enough to keep your attention. You’ll loose nothing by taking the time to watch it , even if it is not exactly your usual cup of tea it won’t annoy you and I think you might even thoroughly like it .

Bickford plays the despicable cattle king exceptionally well. Crawford is as good in the alcoholic sheriff role. The flashback treatment is the best way to tell this story. John Ford would use the "this is the way it really happened" flashback technique later with "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." This is really an above average western.

I almost didn't watch this movie, because I really have never cared for Broderick Crawford!! Seeing him in Highway Patrol w/his difficult to understand 90-MPH mumbled/jumbled dialogue was a turn off!! But after skipping this several times, I finally decided to give it a look. I'm glad I did; this is a REALLY GOOD movie!! John Derek & Henry Hull were extremely well-cast!! I was amused that at the start of this movie, Crawford was given about as much respect as I had afforded him. But as it progressed, all that changed. The ending was a surprise!!

Skip Homeier was great at playing bad guys, from his child acting days as Skippy Homeier playing the Nazi indoctrinated kid in Tomorrow the World (also played a Nazi on a Star Trek episode), to teen films as a juvenile delinquent, to The Last Gunfighter w/Gregory Peck and film noir roles, TV westerns and sci-fi series, he died in 2017.

Hmmmm... Crawford as the not-too-bright town-drunk sheriff. Interesting departure for this stellar actor. As usual Broderick does a wonderful job. The white sands look way too hot, even on my screen. Impressive horse fall and recovery at 43:20. However, the rehearsed fall at 1:01:15 doesn't make sense to the script). Thanks for posting.
