Being the youngest, Mikey never needed to step up as he had 3 older brothers to always take the lead in crises. Once he lost all his brothers including Splinter, he had no choice but to grow up in a hurry and become his own leader. He could no longer sit back and joke around. Brilliant story. This is no longer the cheerful and positive turtle that we knew. Now it's an old turtle suffering from survivor syndrome. He is Ronin - a warrior without a clan, carrying the weapons of his brothers and obsessed with a single mission - to finish off the last descendant of Oroku. During the years of his wandering and loneliness, Mikey studied his father's book, through which he was able to master his philosophy and find spiritual balance. Thanks to his book, Mikey has developed his fighting skills to perfection: he has learned different forms of martial arts, adapt his body to any kind of combat, and masterfully wield every weapon of his brothers: katana, sai, tonfa, and Bo. And, by the way, you may notice one parallel. Mikey fight with Hiroto with brothers' weapons in the same order when they were killed. First Mikey stabbed Sai into Hiroto's arm - Raph was the first, who died in a bloody battle with Karai and Foot clan. Then he stabbed Leo's katana into Hiroto's stomach - he and Casey were killed in an explosion staged by Stockman. Then he beat him with a Bo - Donatello died together with Splinter in a cemetery in Japan, fighting with Hiroto's army. And only at the end Mikey used his nunchucks and after defeating Hiroto, he accepted his death with honor, completing his last path.

I like idea that they decided to make Michelangelo the Last Ronin. He was always youngest in family, who was often underestimated by his brothers because of his goofy and positive behavior, but Splinter always considered Mikey as talented and gifted son. This comic perfectly revealed Mikey from other side, as an old, tired, but strong-minded warrior who is ready to avenge his family and fight to the end.

I would've been disappointed if it had been anyone else. In most incarnations of TMNT, out of all the Turtles, Mikey had the most potential, but lacked focus which is why he wielded nunchucks So it made sense to me that he be the one. I get that many expected Raph, but his death makes sense as he was the strongest and especially headstrong. prone to outbursts particularly when it comes to protecting his family. him dying first was inevitable.

The thing is I was surprised: Leo is the best fighter he takes the role seriously, whereas Michelangelo does not. Sure, the latter has the most "potential" but potential is not guaranteed. If all he does is play games and never take it seriously he suffers for it greatly. I myself have the potential to be a great engineer but that's not likely to happen either. There is a reason why Leo has the swords, the only weapon that can kill, and the biggest responsibility using said weapons. He has to be careful with them because one mistake and someone could die. Yes, Mikey's weapon takes years to master but nunchucks are a tool, and ultimately a crap weapon that has been glorified by Hollywood. Swords require discipline to use so as not to kill willy nilly and the fact that Leo got shafted for Mikey is disappointing. He spent his whole life working hard and becoming great only for Mikey to usurp him. Leo killed the original shredder and it should have been him that killed this one all his training culminates to this, all his insecurities as the eldest brother and leader fall on him as his brothers fell because of his mistakes and now he has the chance to make up for it. Seems fitting actually.

Fuck man. Seeing Mikey die at the end kind of broke me. This was such a dark, violent and brutal story while also being quite heartbreaking and tragic. Never would I had thought in a million years to see the turtle who was full of life and humor turned into a bitter and resentful character. But that is the beauty of storytelling. This was intense but also interesting. While all of the turtles were very skilled fighters, I think like most of the commenters here that Mikey out of all his brothers, had the most potential. Kind of similar to Gohan in the Dragon Ball series. But due to his goofy and more laidback personality, his potential was in the background over his brothers. This was a great change of pace and he ended up becoming a kind of reluctant teacher and ronin. I also liked that in a way, Mikey also took on some of his brother's personalities as well. What a badass.

As a huge Mikey fan, I love the dark turn of his disposition for the contrast. I wish TMNT projects returned to the tone of the source material. I remember all the seriousness and mature language weaved into that first film. At least as far as “kids” movies go. Michelangelo knew how to fight like everybody else but the thing was everything was all fun for him everybody else is already serious. The choice for the last Ronin being Mikey was good for the character arc but I can also see his death being the most tragic if one of the other turtles ended up as the titular character. He could have went out in a real heroic and self sacrificing way. Kinda like a puppy dying.

Raphael survived because he had gotten into yet another argument with his brothers and left the hideout shortly before. And that during the story he had to finally control his anger in order to exact his revenge

This is unequivocally *THE BEST* _TMNT_ series we've gotten in _decades._ SO much better than what is currently being written/illustrated by current handler Sophie Campbell. No disrespect to her as a person, but it's clear that she doesn't understand (or more accurately, perhaps she just _doesn't CARE)_ what makes The Turtles so beloved to fans. Campbell instead seems more focused on doing Furry based "Slice of Life" stories than TMNT fare. It's starting to feel like I'm reading a Ken Pender's based _Sonic the Hedgehog_ comic...i.e. complete with *NO ACTUAL* "Sonic" characters, and instead just filled with badly written fanfiction OC's who never remain in character from their established personalities. 😩

I recall coming across some random artwork, years ago, that showed, "The Last Turtle." It was a series of beautiful, and tragic, depictions of each Turtle, as if they were the last survivor of their brothers. The Last Ronin was a difficult read, I don't want to see these childhood icons go through so much pain, but it would still be fascinating, to me, to see the story told 4 or 5 more times, in a "What If" type of scenario. How differently would the story be if it was Leo that somehow survived, or Raph, or Casey, or Splinter? Like running a particular D&D module, with a different character sheet. The way each fight flows from one to the next would make for a sick brawler or beat 'em up game. I wonder what those Shredder's Revenge guys are working on, now.

I thought Ronin was Raph, He seems like He'd be the gruffest one to survive in such a story and it would be a small push for him actually use his weapons as tools of war. But it also shows how Horrible situations can change even the most playful and childlike heroes into vengeful warriors. It makes Sense for Ronin to be either Raph or Mikey. Mikey is the more shocking of the two but story wise it makes the most sense for that big of dramatic character shift after going through what he went through. I dig it.

Think Leo the leader and teachers pet sort of character would wholeheartedly adhere to the teachings to Master Splinter. So he would when the foot clan came for them he would be the most skilled one to get out alive. But not without trying to keep the rest of his family alive but I think Donny would make a calculated decision to take Leo out of the fight by ramming him out the window to the alley bellow knocking Leo out. Since to him Logically Leo would be the best case scenario to carry out Master Splinters wishes Raph I could see when he went after Karai. He may have not died but was passed out and went to another part of the Atlantic sea coast nearby. And when he wakes up it may have been many days later and many days after because he couldn't move much because of his limp and needing to eat to get his strength back. So to me as well I see out of the four turtles those two would be the more likely candidates to survive

And how Mikey went in a way the route Bruce Wayne took to become batman, but in a different way was so brilliantly done. He will literally be the last man standing, making sure his brothers made it out alive. then it would be Raphael, because he will get so upset that he will run back and try to help Donatello then Leonardo would have one of his gadgets to get Michelangelo out because he's the baby and no one wants to see the baby go out like that way but I can also see Michelangelo stepping in the way of Leonardo and Leonardo having no choice but to go to report back to Master Splinter if he's even still alive. sadly it sucks anyway you look at it. My first time looking into this story, i assumed the last Ronin was going to be raph or leo, im pleasantly surprised to see its Michelangelo. The most talented of the turtles, but also the happiest and goofiest.

One time in the 1990s my friends and I got down on a blunt and got blabbering for an hour or so about the TMNT. We decided that Mikey and Donny would logically be most likely the final 2 turtles. I will admit that our logic wasn't super solid but this is what we figured. Mikey is treated like the baby brother and Donny would be the most cautious wanting to over think everything. Leo would sacrifice himself to save his brothers because he's the leader. Raph would always throw himself into any danger, because his major flaw is his rage. Leaving Mikey and Donny as the 2 most logical. Then it's down to dumb luck. As someone who now knows the story of the last Ronin, we weren't too far off from this comic's depiction 😅.
